Chapter 239: Chapter 239-If I had a daughter

She ran her fingers through her hair in frustration. How could her life be this miserable? Of all times to get pregnant, why did it have to happen *after* she had signed the divorce papers? Was there anyone in the world more unlucky than her?

Right now, she really wanted to kill the man responsible for this mess. She clearly remembered that one time when she had told him to wear protection. But in the middle of it, he had taken it off himself—and finished inside her. Thinking back, that was probably when it had happened.

She was going insane. Should she keep the baby or not? She had always resisted the idea of having a child with him, yet now that she was really pregnant, she hesitated. Especially after seeing Cynthia’s little princess, Olive—so adorable and lovable. A thought crept into her mind: *If I had a daughter, would she be as sweet as Olive?*

But in the next second, reality hit her. Given her current situation, with a job that kept her endlessly busy, could she really handle being a single mother?

Lost in her dilemma, she didn’t even hear her phone ringing nonstop.

She didn’t know how long she had been sitting there. By the time she snapped out of it, the sky had already darkened. She then took out her phone from her bag and realized that Cynthia had called her several times.

Shaking her head to clear her mind, she dialed Cynthia’s number. Cynthia was worried sick.

"Bonnie, what’s wrong? Why haven’t you been answering my calls?"

"I’m fine..."

She forced herself to sound normal. She hadn’t figured out what to do about the baby yet, and she couldn’t let Cynthia know. If she did, Cynthia would definitely try to persuade her to keep the baby.

"I just got back from Hk. Let’s have dinner tonight?"

Cynthia invited her, and Bonnie trembled slightly when she heard the word "Hk." Still, she agreed.

The truth was, she really needed a friend to be by her side right now. Even though she didn’t want to tell Cynthia anything at the moment, just seeing her would somehow make her feel a little better.

When she arrived at the restaurant Cynthia had mentioned, Cynthia was already sitting there waiting for her, and she had brought her little treasure, Olive. Bonnie looked from afar at the gentle way Cynthia was speaking to Olive, and couldn’t help but glance down at her own belly. Her heart suddenly softened.

"Auntie—"

As she walked over and sat down across from them, before she could even settle into her seat, Olive suddenly said this. Bonnie was so shocked that she nearly fell to the ground.

Cynthia quickly reached out to support her.

"Hey, hey, Bonnie, are you alright? How can you be so careless?"

Still shaken, she sat down in the chair, raised an eyebrow, and stared at Olive, pretending to be stern as she asked, "What did you just call me? Who taught you to call me that?"

The little girl giggled and glanced at her mom, then opened her mouth to reveal her pearly white baby teeth and whispered again,

"Auntie—"

Bonnie almost lost it. She shifted her gaze to the culprit sitting beside her, who seemed totally unfazed.

"Cynthia, are you out of your mind? Why are you letting Olive call me that? I’m divorced from him, you know?"

Her best friend just chuckled and played dumb.

"I didn’t teach her! I don’t know why she suddenly started calling you that."

Bonnie huffed in frustration.

"Hmph, do you think your daughter is a genius who can even figure out how to address others on her own?"

"Alright, alright, let’s not get stuck on this name thing. Let’s just order already!"

Cynthia laughed it off and handed her the menu. Bonnie took it with an exasperated sigh and started flipping through it. For all those years of friendship, Cynthia had really changed since she found a boyfriend—totally forgetting her old friend.

Cynthia, meanwhile, sat there, smiling warmly at her.

"Don’t forget to order a bottle of red wine. Tonight, we’re just going to relax, chat, and drink like we used to back in college, remember? We’d buy a bunch of beer and sneak out to the playground in the dead of night!"

After she said that, she rested her face on her hand, lost in nostalgia.

"Sigh, Bonnie, I really miss those days. If it weren’t for this little shadow here, I’d totally drag you to our school’s playground for a drink tonight!"

Tonight, Albert had a social engagement, and Olive refused to be left behind. No matter how much she tried to convince her, Olive wouldn’t listen, so Cynthia had no choice but to bring her along.

When Bonnie heard Cynthia talk about drinking, she suddenly felt uneasy and gave her a glance.

"Uh, uh... I... I’ve been having some stomach issues lately, so I can’t drink..."

"Stomach problems? Then forget it, we won’t drink..."

Cynthia looked a little disappointed when Bonnie said that, but still chided her with concern.

"I’m telling you, Bonnie, you work too hard. You don’t even have a proper mealtime. That’s how your stomach got messed up!"

"Alright, alright, if you weren’t nagging, I almost forgot you’re actually a doctor!" 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Bonnie rolled her eyes and then raised her hand to call over the waiter to take their order.

Taking the opportunity to mention her doctor background, Cynthia lowered her tone and said,

"Bonnie, actually... Albert wants me to go back to being a doctor..."

When Bonnie heard this, a wave of guilt crossed her face.

"I’m sorry, Cynthia. It’s all my fault for pulling you into this industry!"

Cynthia sighed.

"How can you blame yourself? I was working in this field back in Australia anyway. What I meant was, I had planned to help you for a while and then leave, but now I can’t leave."

Bonnie looked at her in confusion.

"Why can’t you leave? Since Albert doesn’t like you in this line of work, once I find a suitable producer, you can just quit, right?"

Actually, it wasn’t just Albert who didn’t like her working in this field—Cynthia didn’t like it either. In Bonnie’s memory, the gentle and soft Cynthia never belonged in the ruthless business world. She was born to wear a white coat and use her skilled hands to save others as a doctor.

"Because... because..."

Cynthia hesitated, then carefully raised her eyes to look at Bonnie.

"Because my brother said he won’t be coming back here anymore! You know, how could I bear to let you handle this TV station alone?"

He won’t be coming back here anymore!

Bonnie wasn’t sure how to process those words. It felt as if someone had lightly poked her heart with a sharp needle. Though the touch was light, it still stung so badly that she nearly cried out.

She picked up her glass of water and awkwardly took a sip, then turned her head to the side.

"It’s better if he doesn’t come, saves us from the awkwardness of seeing each other."

"Bonnie—"

Cynthia seemed like she wanted to say more, but the waiter came over to take their order. She had no choice but to stop and just looked at Bonnie with a complex expression.
