Chapter 44: "Marry Me?" 2

"You are here?" Vanessa asked looking surprise to see Erin.

Smiling, Erin and his mother entered as she showed Vanessa a birthday package, "Of course I’m here.. there’s no way I’ll miss my little niece’s birthday.. what type of uncle will I be then?"

He said as he smiled handing over the birthday package to a maid.

Smiling cunning, Hannah with her usual shrouded makeup just smiled, "Don’t tell me we aren’t invited Vanessa.. I thought we were all family."

"Of course you are invited, sorry I just have a lot on my mind now.. why don’t you guys make your way to the backyard, that’s where the party is taking place."

She said as she called called a maid to direct them.

Turning around, she found Rowen standing there staring at her, his face absolutely not looking pleased.

"You invited them?" He asked as he then turned around and left not even waiting for her respond.

Seeing that Vanessa sighed. She didn’t know why Erin was here but it totally wasn’t good.

The birthday party was fun and full of different events.

Vanessa made sure the kids had the most delicious treats. They were entertained by musicians and she even offered free autographs.

Meanwhile the adults and parents where all entertained with nice classy music and champagne. It was nice and fun.

"Alright everyone! It’s time to cut the cake!"

Mariam announced as everyone gathered around. Soon the huge unicorn cake arrived as all the kids gasped in surprise snd amazement, surely Tara’s birthday was going to be talked about in her entire school the next day.

Carrying Tara, Rowen placed her on a stool in front of her cake since she was too little to reach it.

"The birthday girl must make a wish first!" Vanessa said as Tara smiled and nodded.

Closing her eyes, she joined her two hands together as she stood in silence for some seconds before opening her eyes and blowing the candle.

As every applauded.

"Cut the cake!"

And with that, the little girl took a slight cut as she placed it in Vanessa’s mouth, "Have some mommy!"

She said as Vanessa smiled and happily took a bite as she then turned to Rowen and gave him a piece of cake as well as they all cheered.

Everyone was joyful except the mother and son Duo that stood at the corner of the desert table.

"Look at them, with their stupid faces.. smiling. Bunch of idiots!" Erin cursed taking a bite off a piece of cupcake.

"Don’t worry son, soon everything they have will be all yours.. Just get Vanessa and everything you want would be all yours." Hannah adviced.

"Don’t worry mother, Vanessa is all mine.. just you wait and see... I’ll make Rowen pay for everything he has taken from me."

Soon the after party started and the kids were busy having fun at the bouncy castle while the parents and adults discussed.

Taking a look out how everything was going gave Vanessa a satisfied smile. She was so happy it turned out well and so far Erin and his mother haven’t caused any trouble, maybe they were really here for family sake.

Appearing out of nowhere, Rowen said, "You did a great job, Vanessa."

Vanessa turned, surprised but smiling. "I did, didn’t I? Everything turned out better than I imagined."

Rowen nodded, watching the kids jump around the bouncy castle and the adults sipping wine while enjoying the soft music.

"You planned it all well. Tara looks really happy."

"Thanks," Vanessa said, her voice soft. "That’s all I really wanted."

They stood in silence for a moment, both watching the party.

Before Rowen could say more, a couple of parents began arguing near the buffet table. Voices rose, drawing attention.

Vanessa frowned. "Let me check that out," she said quickly, already heading in their direction.

Just as she was about to step forward, the lights suddenly went out.

Gasps filled the garden.

"Did someone switch off the generator?" someone whispered.

"Where’s the light?"

The music stopped. Even the bouncy castle sagged slightly. People looked around in confusion.

Then, out of nowhere, a single spotlight turned on

focused directly on Vanessa. She raised her hand to block the light, clearly confused.

"Vanessa!" a voice called.

Everyone turned.

Walking into the spotlight with a microphone was Erin, dressed sharply but wearing that usual smug expression.

Vanessa’s heart sank a little.

"What is he doing?" she muttered.

Erin cleared his throat. "Sorry about the lights, everyone. I just needed a moment to say something."

Vanessa didn’t move. Her face remained still, unreadable.

"I won’t waste time with a long speech. We’ve known each other for a while, and... I think we’d make a good team." He paused awkwardly, then shrugged. "So, yeah... let’s do this."

He pulled out a ring box, opened it, and knelt down his eyes fixed on Vanessa, waiting for her to say yes as he gave Rowen a snug smile.

"Vanessa Owen, marry me?"

The crowd was dead silent. Some people exchanged confused glances, others tried to smile politely.

"Isn’t she married to Mr. Quinn, why is someone else proposing to her out of nowhere?"

"I Heard she and Mr. Quinn got divorced recently but why the hell is she bringing her boyfriend to her own daughter’s birthday. So shameless!"

The spotlight stayed on Vanessa, but she didn’t say anything right away.

Vanessa just stared at Erin. Not in shock more like disbelief. She she knew he was going to do something stupid coming here but this was way more than she had expected.

Standing a little away from the crowd, Rowen watched, his expression hard to read.

The silence stretched.

And then finally, Vanessa spok, "This isn’t the right time to do this Erin.. it’s my daughter’s birthday.".

She whispered as Erin shaked his head in disapproval.

"I don’t care, I want to marry you so I can ask for your proposal anywhere at anytime."

"Now tell me , Vanessa Will you marry me?"
