Chapter 34: Rewrite my own destiny

The woman stared at Luciana as if she had asked a strange question. It looked like she was caught off guard by her question.

"I... I don’t know. There’s no other way I know that can break the curse apart from staying away from each other. I know your feelings for him are changing, but it can’t be that deep. I know you hate him. Shouldn’t you take this chance and get away from him? Why are you hesitating and not listening to me?"

"I will not allow anyone to dictate my life for me. Thanks for your caution, but I will rewrite my own destiny, and in this life, I choose to do it by Nicholas’ side," Luciana declared, and it was the woman’s turn to look at her as if she were crazy.

"There’s only one thing I need to ask: Since my scattered souls are coming back together, does that mean all of us involved in the curse will begin to remember events from the past? I’m talking about Nicholas, David, and Evelyn," Luciana said, mentioning the names of the people she had seen in the vision so far.

"The curse involved only Nicholas and me, and after being stuck here all alone in this space for 2000 years, I only thought of setting my soul free. I don’t know about the others," she said and paused before adding.

"If someone can remember, it would be Nicholas because, like me, his soul is stuck in limbo. We are to be apart and all alone until eternity. It’s something we are going to bear because of the curse."

"I’m sorry you are going through that. Also, thank you for telling me; I think I can find a way on my own this time," Luciana said.

"I hope you’ll still be so sure when bad things begin to happen. Take care, princess," the woman said and disappeared.

Luciana woke up only to find that she was alone on the bed. Nicholas was nowhere in sight, and his side of the bed was cold, an indication he had left for a long time.

Everything from the dream she had was very vivid in her mind; it was as if she lived through those memories herself. She looked through the window and saw that it was already morning. She didn’t know she had slept until morning.

She called for Esther, and she soon entered the room and bowed.

"My lady, you called for me," Esther said respectfully.

"Did the prince leave any message for me before he left?" She asked, and Esther shook her head.

"None that I know of, my lady," Esther said.

Luciana felt disappointed because after seeing how he died in her past life, she wanted to hug him to see him. She missed him, and after everything she saw in her dream, it was as if a year had passed.

Seeing the interactions between Nicholas and her in her first life, her love for him became even stronger; she didn’t even care if their entanglement was forbidden or ill-fated. She wanted to be with him.

She would just put everything in order in her courtyard and go and find him later. She just hoped he wouldn’t be too surprised she was the one doing the chasing now. She also needed to go to the imperial library and see if she could find any material or written documentation about the history of the previous kings; she might find the story of the first Nicholas and his kingdom and might get some clues about how to break the curse from there.

Seeing how Nicholas was easily killed by David in her previous life because he was poisoned, she realized Nicholas must not lose his strength; it was dangerous.

"How is Dora? Is she feeling any better?" Luciana asked Esther.

"Yes, my lady, she is getting the scented oils and bathing soap ready so that she can prepare a bath for you with the new maids. She got to work as soon as she heard you calling my name. She was fine this morning when she woke up," Esther said.

Luciana felt happy when she realized Dora was fine now, but she didn’t want Dora to start working so soon and break down when she had barely slept overnight. She then realized Esther made mention of some new maids.

"Did you just say new maids? Did the palace send them over?" Luciana asked in with raised eyebrows.

"Replying to my lady, the eldest prince brought additional maids from the labor office and some additional guards for your courtyard. Everyone is talking about how the prince is pampering you," Esther said in a gossipy tone.

A small smile crept onto Luciana’s face as she heard Esther’s words. Nicholas was really different from her past life. Even though he had left her alone in the middle of the night, he had still done so much for her while she was still sleeping.

"Has Ruth returned?" She asked Esther, and she nodded.

"Ruth is in her quarters, my lady. She had come to report to you that she returned from the disciplinary bureau but decided against it when she saw you were still sleeping," Esther answered.

"Okay, call Dora in; I’d like to meet the new maids," she said, and Esther respectfully bowed.

"I’ll get to it, my lady," she said.

"Good morning, my lady, did you sleep well?" Dora’s chirpy voice filled her chambers, and she looked up at her.

"How are you feeling this morning?" Luciana asked back, and Dora happily replied,

"I’m fine, Your Highness; thanks for always caring for this servant; the ointment and the medicine were very helpful," Dora said in a sincere voice full of gratitude.

"Don’t call yourself a servant again, you fool; haven’t you realized it yet? You’re my sister and my friend. I hope you also see me in that way. Let’s keep each other company until you find someone you love. I will prepare a grand wedding for you," Luciana said, holding Dora’s hand in one hand and patting the back of her hand with her other hand.

"Who said I want to get married? I only want to stay with my lady until I grow old," Dora said, blushing.

Luciana couldn’t help teasing her further after seeing her blushing cheeks.

"Okay, introduce the new maids to me and let them prepare my bath; you must rest; it’s an order," Luciana said, and Dora clapped her hands to summon the maids.

"Greetings to the princess consort," the four girls who just arrived chorused together and bowed.

"Rise," Luciana simply said, and they all went back to their standing posture.

"Okay, introduce yourself and let the princess know your area of specialty," Dora instructed, and the first one began.

"I’m Lily; I’m a foot maid," the first girl said. A foot maid is a maid whose duty is to wash the feet of their master when needed.

The second girl also introduced herself, the third followed, and then finally, the fourth girl also introduced herself and her area of specialty. There was a footmaid, a hairstylist, a bathmaid, and a kitchen staff.

Dora was happier than Luciana after the maids exited her chambers and helped Luciana undress and prepare herself to take her bath.

"The prince loves you a lot, my lady. I think you should hurry up and bear him an heir. I think that would make him happier and that Lady Evelyn won’t be too presumptuous," Dora advised.

Luciana’s eyes flickered as the words of the woman in her dreams replayed in her mind. "Anytime our union bears fruit, it will have an early death."

The words struck her like lightning, and she felt scared all of a sudden. Did it mean that her child with Nicholas would suffer the same fate as her little Prince Authur in her previous life? No! She must allow that to happen.

"My lady, are you alright? You look so pale all of a sudden. Is it because of something I said?" Dora asked with a hint of worry in her eyes.

"No, I’m fine," Luciana said and slipped into the water that had flower petals flowing on top of it.

She sat in the water and tried to relax when a sweet fragrance entered her nostrils. Did Nicholas also give her some new fragrant petals for bathing? She thought, and a smile bloomed on her face.

"Did you add something else to the regular mix for my bath?" Luciana asked Dora. She was very sensitive to smells because of her ability, especially with the smell of petals and flowers.

"Yes, my lady, I knew you would be able to tell something was different. I must give credit to Ruth this time around; she was the one who brought it from the pharmacy, saying many maids were hogging it for their mistresses, so she also requested some for you," Dora said.

"Where is it?" Luciana asked. As soon as she heard Ruth was involved, she had a bad feeling, and as soon as Dora handed her the pouch and she took a whiff, she shot up from the basin, and the water splashed everywhere.

"Where is Ruth?" She yelled, and Dora instinctively felt scared seeing the cold aura Luciana was exuding.

"Is something wrong, my lady? Ruth is still in her quarters," Dora said tentatively, gulping when she saw how Luciana fiercely clenched her fingers around the pouch she was holding as if she wanted to crush it into smithereens.

’Good, is this how she wanted to play it? Making her barren? Then she shouldn’t blame her for what she would do next! She would make her pay!’ Luciana inwardly swore.
