Chapter 156: If you give me your life, I’ll protect it

[Building a fence round the hotel, wouldn’t be bad. It would allow you more protection and more space to park these cars.]

Qingran sighed, they lacked the material to build the fence.

"We don’t have any materials, neither do I have any knowledge in architecture." freёnovelkiss.com

[I can help you with that along with the sight to spot materials. But it will cost you the rest of your points, you already lost 10k yesterday..it was used for the barricaded doors, the remaining 15k would be divided, 10k to access architectural knowledge and 5k for insight.]

Qingran stilled.

Spending all her points in one go wasn’t a decision to make lightly. Points were lifelines. They could be exchanged for food, medicine, even emergency teleportation if needed. If she used it all up, she’d have nothing left for an emergency fallback.

But... looking at the cracked cityscape outside, at the horizon already beginning to darken with the promise of chaos, she knew: if they didn’t fortify now, they wouldn’t survive the month.

Fencing the hotel would give them a defensible perimeter. It would mean safer nights. A chance to stockpile resources without worrying about constant breaches.

Slowly, Qingran leaned forward, elbows braced on the table.

"Fine," she muttered. "Do it."

[Confirmed.]

A soft chime echoed in her mind, almost too quiet to be heard. A rush of information flooded her thoughts immediately after — blueprints, structural basics, material resilience calculations, weak points, stress tests, fast construction methods.

At the same time, a new filter overlaid itself on her vision. Materials around the room now glowed faintly — different colors representing different uses. Wood, metal, even salvageable concrete chunks would now catch her attention when scouting.

Qingran let out a slow, shuddering breath as she rode out the aftershocks of the influx.

"Damn..." she muttered. "You really don’t do things halfway."

Lingquan chuckled, a rare sound, low and brief.

[Efficiency saves lives.]

Qingran hauled herself upright, shaking off the lingering headache. She had too much to do to indulge it.

First step: plan the scouting properly.

She pulled out a battered notebook from her duffel bag and began scribbling.

Scouting team: Qingran (Meng Nian, Chen Wei, Xu Tianming, Yu Song). Second team. Qingran (Feng Yuxi, Mei Jiao, Luo Feng, Chen Shi.)

Vehicles: SUV (Qingran), sedan (Meng Nian).

Target: Nearby hospital, high chance of supplies. Potential acquisition: ambulance for larger transports.

Secondary target: Construction sites nearby — for fencing materials (metal, wood, fencing wire).

• Time: Leave at dawn, back by dusk.

• Risks: Hostiles, mutated infected, structural collapse.

After finalizing the rough plan, Qingran closed the notebook with a snap.

"I’ll try to rotate the router as much as I can, so no one, including me, would get a burn out."

[Seems doable, for now. After one scouting mission we’ll know who’s really cut out for this job.]

Qingran sighed, it got harder and harder with each turn.

"Very well. Let’s test this set first and we if they are cut out for this."

Qingran stood up with the tray and walked out of the room, handing it to Bai Shiyue. She thanked her before heading out of the suite.

"Meng Nian, gather Chen Wei, Xu Tianming, Yu Song. We’re heading out, there’s still lots of students and staff at the school at need rescuing, we can only move to the next zone after we’ve rescue everyone from the school."

Qingran said as she got to the 35th floor, Meng Nian nodding as he went to get the assigned names.

It took a lot of time, which Qingran found odd, everyone she needed was in the 35th floor, apart from Xu Tianming, who was in the 39th floor.

She was about to head to the elevator when it opened.

She muffled a laugh when she saw Meng Nian, drag Xu Tianming by ear out of the elevator.

"Aiya, aiya..I said I don’t want to go back to that hellhole."

Xu Tianming tried to resist but he didn’t want to injure himself in the process.

"It’s alright. Let him go Meng Nian, if he doesn’t wanna go, he can say no.." Qingran paused as Meng Nian let him go, Xu Tianming gave a low hissed, as he arranged his clothes.

"Yeah if I don’t wanna go, I can stay." Xu Tianming gloated as a smile appeared on Qingran face.

"If you don’t want to go, that’s fine. You stay and guard outside the barricade.."

"..."

Xu Tianming eyes widened, weighing his options, if he was with her he would be safer anywhere.

"Look I know you’re scared for you life, it’s understandable but what about your friends and classmates back in the school? Don’t you want to save them? It’s your school, you know the layout. I need your help to show me where the hiding spots are, that’s why I called you out. Rest assure, if you give me your life...I’ll protect it."

Xu Tianming eyes widened, the gaze Qingran held was so strong, he had no doubt that even if they were in the middle of the storm, she would protect him.

He smiled softly and raised his fists "Very well, after such a declaration, I know I won’t die if I’m with you."

Qingran smiled, "Let’s hope none of us dies then.."

Qingran headed to the elevator as they followed behind her. As they rode down the the elevator, she relayed how they were going to ferrying the survivors.

"Xu Tianming will come along with me in the SUV, while Meng Nian, Chen Wei and Yu Song, you take the other car. Our goal is to rescue 12 people, we don’t have truck..we can’t ferrying many people at once."

Yu Song bit his lips, the zombies in the school must be countless, just how was Qingran going to protect them all.

"And I can’t protect all of you. There’s only one of me and 4 of you. Meng Nian has a gun, so tell me your preferred weapon and I’ll give you. Note if you cannot use a gun or don’t have any experience in using it, you’ll be given a baseball bat, who knows rather than killing the zombies, you might kill us instead."
