Chapter 233 - Changes!

"I... Uhhh..." Maruti's mouth hung open. Her brain stopped working for a moment. She had never felt this much pressure just to say the right thing. Sweat formed on her forehead as she stared at her sister's sharp eyes.

"Is this... what they call the elder sibling aura?" she gulped, feeling like she was about to get scolded in front of the whole cafeteria.

Sasha slowly took a deep breath. She noticed how the students nearby were staring, waiting for some drama. So instead of yelling, she calmly walked over and sat down beside Maruti.

"You can explain yourself," she said in a cold voice. "And based on that... I'll decide your punishment."

Maruti's eyes twitched. "Punishment? What do I need to be punished for?" she almost snapped, but quickly bit her tongue. She clenched her fist under the table, holding back her anger.

She forced a shaky smile and said, "Well... everyone here eats meat... and it's good for the body too. So I... I just decided to try it too."

She stuttered as she spoke, but her voice still reached Sasha's ears.

"What?" Sasha's eyes widened. "You chose to eat innocent animals... just for your own benefit?"

Her voice was sharp and filled with disappointment. Maruti could feel a lump in her throat.

"So what?" Maruti shot back, her tone rising a little. "Don't we kill people too in battles? It's not like we were ever innocent in the first place!"

Sasha shook her head slowly. "That's different," she said, her voice quiet but firm. "We have intelligence. They have intelligence too. And when we fight other people, it's because we both choose to. But animals... they live by nature's rules. They don't have the same understanding. Killing them without reason is wrong."

She closed her eyes for a moment, like she was remembering something important.

"Even for vegetables, We never cut down fully grown trees, And only cut dead trees fully. We only take what we need. And we always make sure to plant more. That's the balance of nature. That's how it should be."

Sasha turned to Maruti again, her eyes serious. "It's a taboo to kill animals unless they attack you first."

Maruti lowered her head a bit, her lips pressed into a line. She wanted to argue more. But she also knew her sister wasn't saying these things lightly.

"And you—" Sasha added sharply, "with a holy name like 'Maruti'—eating meat like this is just shameless."

Maruti's chest tightened. Her hands gripped the edge of the table.

"Holy name? Shameless?",she repeated those words in her heart, and they burned. "What did I even do to deserve this?"

"I'm just a demon with an angel's name. If everyone lived according to their name, the world would be a completely different place," she muttered silently in her thoughts.

Then suddenly, a small spark of mischief lit up in her mind. An idea.

Maruti looked up with big, sad eyes and dropped her shoulders, letting out a small sigh.

"Actually..." she began in a soft voice, "I didn't break any taboos. I didn't kill those animals, right? The chefs cooked it. It wasn't me. Even if I didn't eat it... it would've just gone to waste in the dustbin..."

She looked away with a guilty expression, her voice even sadder.

"I just thought... wouldn't it be worse if they died for nothing? If their meat was thrown away like trash, wouldn't that be... even more disrespectful?"

She placed a hand over her chest. "That's why I ate it. So their death wouldn't be meaningless. At least... they served a purpose."

Sasha blinked, taken off guard by her little sister's sudden sadness.

Maruti stayed quiet, looking down at her plate, pretending to feel full of guilt. But inside?

She was hoping... maybe this could save her.

She was quiet for a moment, looking down but then she took a peek at Sasha who had a complex expression. She doesn't know what to say.

I mean... it was kind of convincing? And also Maruti's halo of happiness was affecting her too, not letting her get angry.

Sasha sighed as she said, "Well... that's true! But remember no meat once we are back home!" She warned.

"And you got some guts for fooling us saying you and that vampire girl are lovers huh?" Sasha said, making Maruti shiver down in realisation that they got found out.

Maruti expected to get scolded but Sasha let out a sigh, "Well I guess it was our fault that we were going to kill her for no reason and because of her interference we got to know about that traitor Lothal family's true colours!" Sasha gritted her teeth just remembering it.

"We were the ones who made him turn into traitor..." Maruti thought with a dry laugh but didn't dare to say out loud.

"Well I was actually surprised that you, the queen of laziness, would go that far to save someone. I guess I'm kind of happy that you changed." Sasha gave a warm smile and patted Maruti's head like a big sister as she stood up and walked out of the cafeteria.

Only Maruti let out a sigh of relief, "Fuck I hate siblings, Fable is really lucky that she doesn't got one!"

---------------

Soon the night comes and it was morning, once again it was the boring routine of having bath and after changing clothes, it was class time.

The only difference was that today Class A will receive keys for their personal apartment given by the academy. Of course that would be done in private.

Inside the classroom, there were many new faces that newly joined the academy. One of them was Cassandra. Unlike last time, she was now sitting with Ethan and her team, and on her seat, Sasha was sitting quietly looking outside of the window.

It was clearly obvious that she decided to separate herself from Ethan's group.

Actually, this wasn't what happened in the original FLF storyline. And the sole people responsible for this were none other than Maruti and Esdeath.

In FLF, Sasha actually joined Ethan's group because she had no siblings to look out for and she loved challenging things. The harder the better! And with the heat of the situation she agreed, but now she was actually being neutral about it.

Maruti was just like always, sitting on the second last seat of the middle row. She leaned her head on her hand, lazily staring at the front. Honestly, she was kind of happy today. Just like yesterday, Kaelith didn't come to class. That alone made her mood way better.

But then, all of a sudden, something strange happened.

A cold, scary feeling spread through the classroom. It wasn't strong enough to freeze someone, but it was definitely chilling—like a ghost had just entered the room. The air got heavier, and some students even rubbed their arms because of the sudden shiver they felt. It wasn't normal... it was something terrifying.

The whole class went silent. Even those who were whispering or messing around just stopped.

Tap... Tap... Tap...

A slow sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway and into the room. It was calm but carried a strange pressure with it, like the sound was walking over their nerves.

Then, a tall female figure entered the classroom.

She had long black hair tied into a neat braid, with straight bangs just touching her eyebrows and two longer strands framing her face. Her skin was super pale—almost like she hadn't seen sunlight in years. It looked cold, soft, and smooth like snow, giving off a vampire-like beauty. Her eyes were red, glowing a little, and inside them were strange ring patterns that made her look even more mysterious. Beautiful, yes—but there was something creepy and eerie about it.

She was Esdeath.

Her entire body was surrounded by a faint black aura. It wasn't bursting out wildly, but it was leaking just enough to scare everyone and show she was not to be messed with.

It was her death aura.

Even her outfit was different today. Instead of the usual skirt, she was wearing tight black pants that hugged her long legs like leggings, but got loose at the ankles. Her shirt was buttoned all the way up, neat and proper, tucked inside the pants without showing even a tiny bit of skin or cleavage.

She had grown taller too—by around four centimeters. Now she stood around 176 cm, and even though Ethan too grew taller after using essence stone, He was still a little shorter than her.

Ethan stared at her, a bit confused. "Is that... death aura?" he thought. He had never seen or felt death aura before, so he couldn't be sure. But something about her presence told him this wasn't normal.

Sasha narrowed her eyes too. "Something changed about her..." she thought. The last time she saw Esdeath, she wasn't this strong. Back then, she barely managed to defeat Ujjain. But now? She felt different. Stronger. Scarier.

Cassandra, sitting with Ethan's group, clenched her fists under the desk. "Sister-in-law..." she thought with a complicated expression. She wanted to talk to her, but she couldn't find the right time or courage.

But Esdeath didn't look at anyone. She avoided all gazes like she didn't even see them and walked slowly to the back row.

Then she sat down next to Maruti, moving elegantly like a noble. Her face didn't show any emotion. Cold and quiet.

But Maruti's face twisted in irritation the moment she saw her. "Tch... quit copying Makima," she sneered in a low voice, not hiding her annoyance. "And why are you leaking your death aura? Isn't that supposed to be a secret?"

Esdeath rolled her eyes. "Shut up. I'm not copying anyone, It's just I don't like anyone seeing my exposed skin!," she replied in a bored tone. "And as for leaking my aura, it's fine now. We've got status. I can finally use my ZK-20 freely without hiding or worrying about who's watching."

She gave a small smirk. "Of course, I'm not gonna make it super obvious. I'm just trying to leave a good first impression." She tilted her head slightly and added, "Not like just anyone can tell the difference between normal aura and death aura anyway."

Her voice was calm, almost playful, but there was pride behind it. She was showing off—just enough to remind everyone that she was on a different level now.

Meanwhile, the whole class still couldn't take their eyes off Esdeath. Even now, everyone kept glancing at her from the corners of their eyes—especially at the shining "cosmic tuna" earrings dangling from her ears. They sparkled faintly under the light, adding a mysterious charm to her already eerie presence.

"Is it true she got married?" a curious girl whispered to her friend, leaning closer with wide eyes.

"Yeah! She's a Mariette now," her friend whispered back with a sigh of relief. "Thank the goddess I never tried to mess with her... I would've been dead by now!"

"I think we should try to get close to her," someone else added from a few seats away, eyes thoughtful. "She might be really helpful... especially if there's some team-based match or dungeon later. Having her on our side would be smart."

While some students were already thinking of becoming friends with Esdeath—trying to get on her good side before it was too late—there were others who clearly couldn't hide their jealousy.

"Tch... seriously?" one girl muttered under her breath. "That black-haired witch has more status than us now? It's like a slave ordering it's master!"

Another boy with short green hair crossed his arms and scoffed, "Why would someone like Lortell marry her? And both are girls? Disgusting. The goddess will never forgive such sins."

"The world is falling apart," someone else whispered bitterly. "I just know something unlucky will happen again. It's all because of her. We should've burned her when we had the chance. Then we would've been free from her cursed presence..."

Whispers like these filled the room—some people were scared, some were impressed, and some just couldn't accept Esdeath's sudden rise in power and status. It was chaos in quiet voices.

But Esdeath didn't seem bothered at all.

In fact, she was enjoying it.

She could feel all the stares, hear the whispers behind her back, and it made her smirk.

"Good... keep talking about me. The more they notice and acknowledge me, the more SP points I earn," she thought proudly, turning her head slightly toward Maruti beside her.

Then she whispered casually, "We're only going to attend half the classes today. After that, we'll head deep into the forest to hunt monsters and fully test our powers, alright?"

Maruti tilted her head with a wide grin. "Why only half? Let's just go now! Kaelith didn't show up yesterday, and now she's missing again today!" She giggled, showing off her perfectly white teeth. "I can't even describe how happy that makes me!"

Esdeath chuckled softly but shook her head. "No. The first class is about magic. That's why I'm staying."

"Ohh, smart choice!" Maruti nodded quickly, giving her a big thumbs-up with a grin. "Let's hope the teacher doesn't take forever!"

And with that, the two of them sat side by side, calmly waiting for the teacher to arrive.
