Reborn to Redeem: Their Abusive Love-Chapter 66: I’m giving you a chance to run away
Chapter 66: I’m giving you a chance to run away
It must hurt so much. It looked incredibly painful. freёnovelkiss.com
Blood flowed down his body, winding its way to the ground and seeping into the black, patterned carpet.
Xu Si’s face was smeared with his blood. Looking at his lips, tinged with a smile, she felt a surge of inexplicable sorrow.
She stood there, stunned, feeling the warmth on her face. She moved her lips, but only a trembling voice came out, "What are you doing? Are you insane? Don’t move, I’ll go find someone to save you."
The next second, she wanted to run out and call for help. That wound is in such a fatal spot, and he’s bleeding so fast... he could really die. I never actually wanted him to die. Thinking this, even the step she had just taken faltered.
As the rainy night surged like tempestuous waves, Pei Zhen laughed again, his eyes dazzlingly bright.
His blood-stained hands reached for hers again. As if afraid of soiling her, they lingered on the hem of her skirt before he finally brought himself to grip it tightly, as if pleading for her not to leave, yet also seeming to drag her into hell.
It was hard to believe that, in his condition, he could still stand there so resolutely, his voice drifting and weak.
"This is your second chance. Don’t worry about me, just go. Once I’m dead, the Triad Society will have a new leader, and you’ll be completely free."
After saying this, he reluctantly let go of the slippery hem of her skirt and collapsed heavily to the ground, as if plummeting.
The blood loss paled his handsome lips, but his eyes still shone brilliantly. Fixated on her retreating figure, he murmured softly, "Maternal Aunt, you hate me, so I’ll do as you wish. I hate myself too."
The words were very light, carried away by the wind. Nothing could be heard.
Yet, their content revealed a twisted obedience, a perversion of human nature born from a warped personality.
Xu Si left completely.
The vast room fell into utter silence. The man’s silver hair scattered haphazardly on the carpet. He raised one hand feebly to cover his eyes, not wanting to see this dim world he had lived in for four years any longer.
Soon, more hurried footsteps approached, a mix of light and heavy sounds. Before he could even open his eyes, he felt a beam of light shining in.
A woman’s cool, anxious voice came through.
"Quickly, take him to the hospital! The knife is in his left chest; he’s already lost too much blood."
The bald man entered with a solemn expression. He reverently knelt, calmly took the man’s arm, and injected a green liquid. Then, without a word, he helped him up from the ground and quickly exited.
As they entered the elevator, he finally had time to speak, his voice rough and gravelly, "Boss, we’ll be at the hospital soon."
Pei Zhen’s head was bowed, his thin lips curled slightly, a mist of ice forming in his narrowed eyes.
He didn’t know what there was to be happy about. Ignoring the fatal pain of his wound, he drawled frivolously, "How sad. I really thought I was a goner."
The bald man replied with a cold face, "Although we’ve administered a special adrenaline injection, the location is very dangerous. It’s possible you really could be a goner."
Pei Zhen bowed his head, a scoff escaping his lips. Then, he could no longer muster the strength to speak.
...
Xu Si wanted to follow but was stopped by the servants.
They blocked her way, their smiles identical as if carved from the same mold. Their hands held warm, damp towels, offering them to her to wipe the blood from her hands and face.
"Sister-in-law, please rest at home. There’s no need for you to follow."
Anxious, Xu Si’s face darkened like ice. She took a deep breath and asked calmly, "Why? Am I being treated like a prisoner?"
One of the servants shook their head, saying sincerely, "Sister-in-law, no matter what you do, no one in the Triad Society will treat you as a criminal. It’s normal for a couple to argue and for someone to get hurt. I think the higher-ups will understand. It’s just that if you leave now, we can’t protect you."
?
Xu Si’s bright eyes narrowed, feeling ever more that the world was absurd.
The servants had prepared new clothes for her, along with hot water. They removed the carpet from this dark, Italian-style room before quietly exiting.
Before leaving, one of them offered her some comfort, "Don’t worry. The Boss has sustained worse injuries than this before. The Underground City possesses the most advanced medical facilities. Rest well on the top floor. This is an honor the Boss has bestowed upon you; this room will always be yours to use freely."
Xu Si shut her eyes tightly.
Her mind reeled with the terrifying, frenzied scene she had just witnessed, her heart a tumult of emotions.
Especially his grey eyes, swirling with too many emotions. No longer gentle and bright, they now held a paranoid, desperate desire to keep her there.
Why... Why didn’t he die back then? And if he didn’t die, why won’t he come back to see me now? Xu Si dwelt on this question for a long time without an answer. From dusk till dawn, still, no one brought her any news of the man.
In that moment, she wanted to leave. She wanted to abandon everything and flee this place. Pei Zhen was no longer the Pei Zhen she knew; he had become even more terrifying than in her past life. Their connection had deepened, and their peaceful life might end here. The uncontrollable future filled her with unease.
But Xu Si stayed. The three years of familial affection weren’t fake; deep down, she didn’t want him to die.
The thunder continued to roar unceasingly.
Xu Si had not slept all night, her gaze hollow and weary. She rested in this room, filled with the scent and presence of the man. The blood on her face had dried and cracked before she finally found the bathroom to wash.
After emerging from the bathroom, she finally felt like the clear-headed Xu Si again. She went into the man’s bedroom and sat on the large bed, spread with grey silk. Her nostrils filled with an indescribable yet compelling scent.
She found a box of cigarettes in the drawer and took one out. Without lighting it, she placed it between her lips, savoring the bitter, pungent aroma of tobacco.
What if I can’t leave? What if I stay? What if Pei Zhen doesn’t die? What if Pei Zhen *does* die?
Belated worries swept through her mind.
Her sharp eyes then spotted a black leather notebook. It was inconspicuously placed in the corner of the drawer and looked quite old, its edges incongruously stained.
What’s this?
Xu Si flattened the tip of the cigarette and picked up the notebook, flipping it open.
The writing on the first few pages was smudged and illegible. From the indentations on the back, only a few English letters could faintly be discerned. Only on the very last page, the writing, pressed too heavily, hadn’t been completely erased.
Looking at the blurred ink, Xu Si guessed this was something Pei Zhen had written in the past. She began to decipher it, one character at a time.
—"So, the thorn of the Rose is the blade that can truly kill me. Such brief salvation, is it a reward, or a punishment?"
After that, there was nothing else.
Although she didn’t know who this ’she’ was, Xu Si’s thoughts drifted from his words to the events of today. It felt as if, by some coincidence, something had come full circle at that very moment. When Pei Zhen wrote those words, he probably never imagined a ’she’ would actually point a knife at him. And she never imagined she would see such a sentence today.
She placed the notebook back and closed her eyes. Fighting off her drowsiness, she only rested lightly.
When she woke, a servant told her, "Sister-in-law, the Boss has been rescued."
