Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 424: Losing His Mind (2)
It had been a month since Lewis saw his daughter, Elise, and he had never seen her again since that night. He sat on the chair outside his mother’s hospital room in a daze at the news of her passing. He knew that his mother was at high risk before the surgery, but he hadn’t expected that she would suffer some complications and lose her life in the end.
At that moment, Lewis felt like the world was crashing down. He wanted to scream at the unfairness of his life. In the blink of an eye, he lost everything—his company, his wife, his children, and now his mother. Lewis wondered what had caused such misfortune to befall him. He questioned if he had made some grave mistake or if it was simply a cruel twist of fate.
He watched as the nurse covered his mother’s face with the white blanket, and Lewis felt numb and lost at the same time. Lewis couldn’t help but feel a sense of overwhelming emptiness as he stood there in the hospital room. The weight of his losses seemed unbearable, leaving him unsure of how to move forward or find any glimmer of hope in the darkness that now enveloped his life.
The funeral for his mother was held, but no one came to see her for the last time, reminding Lewis how miserably he had fallen into isolation. Not even her previous acquaintances in high society showed up, forcing Lewis to lay her remains to rest in a small, quiet ceremony with only he and Alfred in attendance.
Lewis then started losing interest in work since then. He remained at home, ignoring the piles of unfinished projects and unanswered emails on his desk. He also stopped caring for himself, missing meals, and not bothering to groom himself. The once well-dressed and put-together Lewis appeared disheveled and unkempt, reflecting his deteriorating mental state.
His isolation and grief had taken a toll on him, causing him to withdraw further from the world around him. He also stopped visiting Cayden in prison and hadn’t heard from Elise. Lewis’s company was only the television, which was almost never turned off. The constant noise and flickering images provided a temporary distraction from his thoughts and emotions.
The takeout packaging and empty fast food containers littered the living room, evidence of Lewis’ reliance on convenience meals and his lack of motivation to cook or clean. With no one to live with, the household chores were left undone as Lewis could not afford to hire or pay someone to do them. The once tidy and organized space had become cluttered and disheveled, mirroring Lewis’ state of mind.
Lewis was lounging on the couch, eating yet another takeout fried rice meal from his favorite restaurant, when the news of Qin Motors unveiling their newest car to be released on the market showed up on television. His hands trembled as he stared at the screen.
The life he always wished for Elise had ended up in Adrienne’s hands. Adrienne was still young, yet she proved that her age wasn’t a limitation to achieving success. She had managed to start her own business while he was stuck in stagnation.
The contrast between their lives was stark, leaving Lewis feeling envious. His daughter’s life was flourishing, while his own seemed to be at a standstill. He couldn’t help but wonder where he had gone wrong and why he hadn’t been able to achieve the same level of success.
Meanwhile, Lennox Qin was his son-in-law, but even he could not help him in his current predicament. Lewis had once tried to meet with Lennox, and when he did, Lennox only laughed and looked at him with mockery.
"When you schemed against your wife and allowed Camilla Yan to hurt my Addie, do you think you could get away with it?" Lennox had sneered.
Upon remembering his encounter with Lennox, Lewis was reminded of Adrienne being the bearer of the ’Star of Calamity.’ The monk said she would cause one of his parents to perish, and with Rosemary surviving her accident, Lewis felt his life was in peril.
Seeing his daughter’s smiling face on the screen as she stood next to her husband made Lewis feel an uncontrollable rage in his heart. He couldn’t help but think that everything was Adrienne’s fault.
He wouldn’t have to lose everything if it weren’t for her. He thought that Adrienne should have never been born and that her existence was the root cause of all his misfortunes. The bitterness and resentment towards Adrienne grew stronger each day, consuming Lewis’s thoughts and clouding his judgment.
He couldn’t shake off the feeling that he needed to confront her and free himself from this misfortune. Lewis couldn’t think of any solution to end his suffering but to end his daughter’s life. He wanted her dead and gone, along with the curse she brought upon his life.
Lewis thought that once he completely got rid of Adrienne, everything would eventually fall into place, and his life would return to normal. He convinced himself that eliminating her was the only way to break free from the never-ending cycle of pain and misfortune. He couldn’t see any other way to happiness and peace due to this dark obsession. Little did he know that his plan would have unforeseen consequences that would forever change his life.
However, getting near Adrienne would be challenging for him. With the restraining order in place and her bodyguards heavily guarded, Lewis knew he would have to devise a carefully thought-out plan to get close enough to confront her. He began researching her daily routine, looking for any weaknesses or vulnerabilities he could exploit. Additionally, he started reaching out to old contacts and acquaintances who could provide him with information or assistance in his mission.
But it seemed cornering Adrienne would be more challenging than he thought. Not only did Adrienne limit her public appearances, but she also stayed home most of the time and used her assistant and bodyguards to handle any necessary errands or tasks outside her residence. It was as if she was aware of the danger waiting for her outside and took every precaution to protect herself.
Despite this, Lewis knew that Adrienne could not hide forever. He knew she would eventually come out, and he would make sure to take advantage of it.
