Chapter 44: Chapter 44:Strength and Weakness

Progress over Time

Just like that, another month flew by. Kain had a routine with 14 daily tasks, gradually mastering the skills and knowledge he needed. Through perseverance and steady progress, Kain was finally able to learn the coveted skills he had been working so hard on. He gained proficiency in Mana Infusing and Elemental Infusion, two critical techniques for his growth as a Guardian Smith.

Skill Mastery

Mana Infusing: This skill allowed Kain to channel his mana directly into objects, enhancing their properties and effectiveness. Through daily practice and visualization exercises, he learned to control and manipulate mana more precisely. Whether it was infusing a weapon with strength or imbuing an item with a specific attribute, Kain’s mastery of Mana Infusing opened new possibilities.

Elemental Infusion: Elemental Infusion took his skillset to the next level. Kain had a breakthrough after diligently practicing with all the basic elements: fire, water, wind, earth, light, and dark. He found that darkness was the hardest to master; he had to visualize the item decaying to succeed. While darkness could do other things, this method worked best for Kain. The skill required a deep understanding of elemental properties and how to align his mana with them to achieve successful infusions.

Leveling Up

In addition to mastering new skills, Kain also leveled up this month. He learned something new about the leveling system:

EXP Requirements: For levels 1-10, the EXP required would increase by 50 each level. After level 10, the increase was 100 per level.

Stat Points: Before, Kain received 3 stat points per level. Now, he gets 5 stat points per level, allowing for greater flexibility in developing his abilities.

Achievements

Kain’s dedication paid off as he completed various tasks and challenges throughout the month:

Daily Tasks: Kain consistently completed tasks such as mining, forging, and combat training, reinforcing his skills and building muscle memory.

Steady Progress: With each task, Kain noticed gradual improvements in his abilities, enhancing his confidence and readiness for more complex challenges.

Skill Breakthrough: Learning Mana Infusing and Elemental Infusion marked significant milestones in his journey, cementing his reputation as a diligent and capable student.

Leveling Up: Gaining new insights into the leveling system and earning more stat points boosted Kain’s overall performance and growth.

Focus Areas

Kain mainly focused on increasing attributes related to his crafting:

Dexterity: For better control with his hands, ensuring precision in his work.

Perception: To perceive changes in his workpiece more easily, allowing for better adjustments.

Intelligence: For both learning new techniques and increasing his mana reservoir, enabling more prolonged and powerful infusions.

First Class: Beginner’s Enchanting

Kain’s first class of the week was Beginner’s Enchanting, and he noticed a significant difference from his previous experiences. The instructor tasked the students with creating a torch that would ignite when mana was injected into it.

Taking It to Another Level

While most students focused on making the cloth catch fire, Kain decided to take the enchantment to another level. He not only enchanted the cloth to ignite but also added a fire resistance enchantment to the wooden shaft the cloth was attached to. His goal was to create multiple cloths that could catch fire when mana was injected, allowing the wooden shaft to be reused.

Kain’s Unique Approach

Kain’s idea was somewhat overkill, as most people who could afford enchanted cloths could just as easily buy a pendant that lights up. However, Kain’s creation had one unique benefit: it didn’t require a constant mana supply to keep it lit. Just a small burst of mana was enough to ignite the cloth, making it more efficient for those who preferred not to constantly refill their mana.

Class Reaction

The instructor and students were impressed by Kain’s ingenuity but lack of practicality of his approach. The teacher congratulated Kain on thinking outside the box and advised him to save such creativity for something more practical in the future.

Second Class: Combat Training

Kain’s second class of the week was Combat Training. The teacher assigned students into groups for team battles, and healers were on standby to ensure everyone’s safety. The exercise involved a 5-on-5 battle, with students grouped according to their specialties.

Battle Breakdown

Kain and his teammates quickly strategized before the battle started. They decided to use a combination of brute force and strategic positioning to outmaneuver their opponents.

Initial Phase:

Kain and Bran took the front lines, using their defensive skills to shield Alis, Celia, and Dari.

Leif and Mara from Team 2 charged forward aggressively, trying to break through Team 1’s defenses.

Mid Phase:

Bran used Shield Wall to block Team 2’s attacks, while Celia targeted Eris and Finn with Piercing Arrows.

Kain employed Shield Bash to stagger Leif, creating an opening for Alis to cast Thunder Bolt.

Mara attempted to sneak around and target Dari, but Kain used Counter Attack to intercept.

Climax Phase:

Leif entered Berserker Rage, increasing his attack power, but Bran and Kain held their ground.

Dari focused on healing the team, while Alis and Celia dealt damage from a distance.

Tara struggled to keep up with healing Leif and Mara, who were taking significant damage.

Conclusion:

Team 1’s coordination and defensive strategies paid off as they slowly wore down Team 2.

Kain delivered the final blow with Hammer Mastery, knocking Leif out of the fight.

Forging Class: Creating Wood’s Metal

Kain’s next and last class of the day was Forging, where the assignment was to make an alloy by mixing metals in a designated ratio to create a stronger metal than the original components. The students were given a recipe for Wood’s metal and enough supplies to make five ingots.

Recipe for Wood’s Metal:

50% Bismuth

26.7% Lead

13.3% Tin

10% Cadmium (by mass)

Uses of Wood’s Metal

Wood’s metal has various applications, including:

Medical Radiation Treatment: Creating custom-shaped apertures and blocks for procedures.

Cast Making: Useful for making casts of keys that are difficult to duplicate.

Heat-Transfer Medium: Employed as a medium in hot baths, especially at temperatures above 220°C (428°F).

Challenges in Forging Wood’s Metal

At room temperature, Wood’s metal has a modulus of elasticity of 12.7 GPa and a yield strength of 26.2 MPa. However, the process of forging this alloy was not without its challenges.

Toxicity and Safety: Wood’s metal contains lead and cadmium, both of which are toxic. Contamination of bare skin is harmful, and the vapor from cadmium-containing alloys poses a significant danger to humans. Additionally, the dust can be flammable, making the forging process risky.

Struggles Faced by Kain and His Classmates

Throughout the class, Kain and his classmates faced numerous obstacles. The complexity of mixing metals in precise ratios, maintaining safety protocols, and achieving the desired alloy properties proved to be challenging.

Kain’s Experience:

Measurement Accuracy: Kain struggled with accurately measuring the exact ratios of each metal, often resulting in imbalances.

Handling Toxic Materials: Ensuring safe handling of lead and cadmium while avoiding contamination was a constant concern.

Alloy Formation: Despite following the recipe, Kain found it difficult to achieve the perfect consistency and properties of Wood’s metal.

Classmates’ Experiences:

Temperature Control: Some students found it challenging to maintain the correct temperature, leading to improper melting and mixing.

Safety Hazards: A few students inadvertently exposed themselves to toxic fumes or dust, requiring immediate attention from the healers on standby.

Inconsistent Results: Many students faced issues with the final ingots, resulting in weak or brittle alloys that did not meet the desired standards.
