Chapter 34: 34. Gaining New Skills.

The first week went by in a flash.

During this period, Ray ventured into the woods and hunted for monsters.

His primary objective and targets were high-level monsters with skills.

However, finding them was always difficult, so he went deeper into the forest, hoping he would find what he was looking for.

For the first two days of the week, Ray found nothing.

He found some monsters, but they were either too weak or didn’t have any skills that he could absorb.

On the third day, Ray found a group of Wild Hawks nesting high in the forest canopy.

These creatures were enormous and swift, and they possessed deadly feathers along with razor-sharp talons.

Their ability to dive at an incredible speed, made it almost impossible for anyone to defeat them during combat.

If anyone with a lower level than Ray were to find these flesh-tearing beasts, there was a high chance that they wouldn’t be able to make it back home.

That just went to show how dangerous it was to encounter one of these monsters.

But Ray had encountered a whole nest of them, and he battled against every last one of them because the moment he stepped into their territory, he knew they weren’t going to let him leave, so he had no other choice but to protect himself.

Ray battled against every single one of them, but he was only able to obtain a skill after defeating the Alpha of the Wild Hawks.

[Congratulations to the host, you’ve absorbed a new skill.]

[Skill: Swift Strike (Uncommon) Lv.1]

[Swift Strike: It increases your attack speed for five seconds during combat.]

[Active Skills: 6/10.]

Two days later, Ray followed the track of a Shadow Panther.

Shadow Panthers were nocturnal predators that hunted their prey by melting into the darkness around them.

They were the worst kind of creatures to encounter at night because of how deadly they were in dark places.

While hunting for the monster, Ray had almost missed it entirely, even with his <<Void Sense>> skill activated.

Since it could easily move through shadows and dark spaces as if they were one, Ray had found it difficult to sense the monster.

Luckily for him, he was able to locate it and thus began his intense battle with the monster.

The Panther was at level 12, meaning that it was way stronger than Ray.

However, the monster was unlike anything Ray had faced outside a dungeon, and it never attacked from the same direction twice.

Ray sustained three deep gashes across his ribs before he could finally drive his Frost blade straight through the creature’s skull.

[Congratulations to the host. You’ve absorbed a new skill.]

[Skill: Shadow Step (Rare) Lv.1]

[Shadow Step: During combat, you can merge with shadows or dark spaces around you. This skill is effective in dark environments but weak against direct light. Skill can last for a duration of 30 seconds.]

[Active Skills: 7/10.]

Ray stared at the notification for a long moment as his lips slowly curled into a smile when he realized that he now had a stealth skill in addition to his spatial teleportation skill.

Such a great combination of skills would enable him to defeat his enemies with ease.

Ray continued with his search for high-level monsters in the forest until he stumbled across a Giant Hornet Queen in the Eastern part of the Forest.

The Hornet Queen was a massive creature about the size of a large dog with a stinger that was dripping with some kind of luminescent venom.

Battling against the monster took hours, during which Ray nearly failed to defeat the Hornet Queen, but luckily for him, he was able to double down and kill it before absorbing its skill.

[Congratulations to the host. You’ve absorbed a new skill.]

[Skill: Paralysis Sting (Rare) Lv.1]

[Paralysis Sting: This skill allows you to coat your weapons in paralytic venom which has a 70% chance of paralyzing your enemies for a period of at least ten seconds.]

[Active skill: 8/10.]

Feeling satisfied with his newly acquired skill, Ray drifted his attention to his status window.

With three new active skills, Ray believed that he should be able to hold his ground against the number of guards the Baron might bring along with him to Thornsville.

He swiftly closed his status window before returning home.

By the following week, the harvest Festival had finally arrived.

The Harvest Festival was an annual celebration that consisted of three days of food, music, games, and dancing in the village square. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Even though the Baron would be arriving in the next couple of weeks, the villagers still threw themselves into the festivities of this harvest period.

Most of the important grains, fruits, and other important crops had been preserved mainly for the Baron’s arrival, so the villagers decided to use what they had left to enjoy themselves.

Of course, many of them were still worried about the tax imposed on them. But maybe because of their worries, many of them thought that they needed this source of joy to brighten up their mood and the general mood of the village.

Meanwhile, in Ray’s Household, Emma had been hopping up and down in excitement for days, for this very moment.

On the first evening of the festival, Emma stormed into Ray’s room, feeling impatient. "Big brother!!" She called excitedly and with a bit of annoyance at the same time.

"What’s up little princess?"

"Everyone is still in their room dressing up for hours. What about you? Are you still dressing up or are you ready to leave like me?" Emma asked as she noticed Ray sitting on his bed while staring at the full-length mirror in his room.

"I’m all set to go if you want to leave."

"Perfect, let’s go, Big Brother. Mom and Mira will meet up with us later."

Ray smiled and swiftly glanced at the mirror once again to fix his hair.

Emma rolled her eyes with a smile before grabbing his arm and pulling him out of his room. "Come on. Stop fixing your hair and let’s go already."
