Reincarnated As A Lion In Another World-Chapter 308: Sherone?
Far away from the river.
The zebra herd had once again created some distance between them and the beast horde. They walked over the wild plains under the cover of the night and were guided by the silver moonlight from above.
The land on the other side of the river was more grassy and the grass here was taller and greener. The breeze blew the tall grasses effortlessly, causing swishing sounds to be heard.
The zebra herd’s members were mostly tired right now. They had been moving for the whole day and desired to rest. If only they could stop.
But the leaders had told them that the super mega herd was just up ahead and they had to keep on going. Only when they joined the Super Mega Herd would they be safe and be able to rest to their heart’s content.
Many pregnant females wished to join this Super Mega Herd so that they could give birth to their young safely. Some young and able-bodied males saw this as an opportunity to meet new females and start their own harem family units.
This was how it was meant to be.
Many of them would dissolve into other herds and the family units would go separate ways to join another herd. It would be like this till the next time they find a Super Mega Herd to join.
If not for Kael’s pursuit, the herd would have still found a way to make it to the Super Mega Herd.
Above the moving zebra herd, a massive red owl flew high in the sky. He looked down, his gaze resting softly on the zebras below. It was night time and igniting his body in raging flames would be very eye-catching. He wasn’t supposed to startle the zebras or make them feel uncomfortable so he had his flames disappear.
For now, he was just a red-feathered owl.
His big eyes were locked on the big zebra at the front of the herd, leading the zebras to who knows where.
"Just up ahead, Your Majesty," The Owl Caste leader said telepathically to the zebra far down below. The distance between them was too great for the owl to have initiated this telepathic link. The channel was being maintained by the terrifying spirit power emanating from the zebra.
"Good," The zebra leader, Sherone, responded shortly after.
Sherone’s steps were confident and his pacing was well coordinated. His head was raised high and his eyes remained focused on where he was going. He didn’t need to constantly look back to check if the herd was following him.
For this new Sherone, the herd didn’t hold as much importance as it did before besides acting as an infiltration unit.
How was Kael supposed to enter the ranks of a herd filled with herbivores? This was how.
But just in case, this Sherone had already begun to work on a few countermeasures.
Unknown to a lot of the herd members, invisible strings were coming out of Sherone’s head and were attaching themselves to the heads of other zebras.
Most of the male leaders had this invisible spirit string boring into their heads and twisting their minds.
Usually, there would have been small talk between the other male leaders and their consorts, but these ones were eerily silent.
Their minds were not taken over, but spirit seeds were inserted just in case anything happened to Sherone. In the case of an accident, Kael would be able to continue his infiltration through these ones.
The reason why they were so quiet was because, in the process of Sherone inserting those spirit seeds, their minds were put into a strange state of confusion.
Engaging in small talk with anyone was not on their minds currently.
Some time had passed and it was now certain that the beastly horde was too far to catch up to them.
Finally, the zebras began to make out the silhouette of many creatures in the distance under the full moonlight.
A long, vertical thing was the first thing Sherone identified from the distant group of creatures.
Upon getting closer, he discovered that that was the neck of a giraffe. One, two, three, four...
More giraffes were popping up in his vision and he was starting to make out the figures of other creatures.
"We’re here, Your Majesty," The Owl Caste Leader said with a tone of suppressed excitement.
From his point of view, the owl leader could see the vast fields filled with different creatures, stretching as far as his eyes could see. And this was very impressive because as an owl, he could see very far, yet even he did not know where this Super Mega Herd ended.
There were giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests, antelopes, and of course, zebras. This was a herd of herds, a literal coalition of herbivores.
This type of herd was not always formed intentionally. It was usually formed when a region of land began to have excess succulent food that appealed to these herbivores.
The herbivores like these zebras would then gather in the same spot and because there is excess, they wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon. This caused the different herds to accumulate over time until it eventually formed a Super Mega Herd.
Only when the food source was depleted and the land was getting barren would the Super Mega Herd dissolve and all the creatures would go their own ways.
Since that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon, these herbivores, these grass eaters, would protect themselves against predators that wanted to kill them. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
To Sherone, or Kael who was controlling his body, this was more impressive than how the owl caste leader had described it.
The closer he got, the more he understood the sheer immensity of their numbers.
From the left to the right, he couldn’t see the end of it. Herbivores upon herbivores upon herbivores. This was a meat eater’s paradise. It was assured that even with the threat of death, many predators would still come here to try out their luck.
As if to confirm Sherone’s thought, a shrill and maniacal animalistic laugh came from the distance to the left. Kael had heard that laugh very few times in his life but Sherone had heard it very well. It was a very familiar laugh, one that brought back old memories.
Hyenas.
In the darkness of the night, the moonlight was the only saving guide for these herbivores. But hearing the laughter of the hyenas, the zebras were starting to feel that the moonlight was not bright enough.
They couldn’t see anything at all. The grass was too tall for them to make out any figures of hyenas, but they could hear the animalistic laughter.
Sherone’s eyes narrowed in a very un-zebra manner. He looked like a predatorial zebra searching for prey. His ears twitched in the direction the laughters had come from.
Then, it came again, this time closer than before.
"MOVE!* Sherone ordered immediately. Even before his words had landed, the zebras had already started running.
Sherone’s hooves beat heavily on the ground as he ran through the tall grass, faster than the others. He was getting close to the Super Mega Herd and the laughters were also getting close to them.
The direction they were running in was covered by some buffaloes who were currently dozing off while standing. Hearing the sounds of Zebras and their hooves beating against the ground, they were startled awake.
The buffaloes let out deep moos and grunts as they took several steps forward. Their eyes trailed beyond the zebra herd, looking closely at what was pursuing them.
They too could not see the source of the laughter but they could see that the zebras were running from something.
Sherone was just a few meters away from the buffaloes when he heard a heart-wrenching squeal from behind.
There were over a thousand zebras, yet Sherone could hear that one particular squeal of agony.
Sherone didn’t look back, he rushed past the buffaloes who stood there like the bad-tempered guardians of the Super Mega Herd.
Their black muscular bodies rippled with power and strength. Streams of hot air constantly shit out from their wet nostrils.
They watched silently as the zebras rushed into the massive herd one by one, mixing in with the other herd members.
Once the final zebra had joined the herd, two buffaloes looked at each other before walking out.
They followed the sound of the constant animalistic laughter they were hearing.
Eventually, they found a horrific scene. The two buffaloes watched as one of the zebras lay on the floor with his head raised and eyes wide open, it was still alive.
But its belly had been torn open and his intestines and other organs were spilling out. A group of hyenas surrounded the fallen zebra, munching on the spilled guts.
They also sank their fangs into the legs, ripping out pieces of flesh layer by layer. They are the zebra in such a fashion that the zebra would remain alive but helpless to save itself.
The zebra’s eyes revealed the agony and pain it was currently feeling. It wanted to scream but it couldn’t, it was afraid that it would die faster and it had already lost its ability to make any significant noise.
The sound of hyenas laughing filled the atmosphere, awakening many of the nearby herd members.
The two buffaloes watched this from a distance, and because of the tall grass, they couldn’t see every detail clearly. There was nothing that they could do, even if they intervened successfully, the zebra would still die.
So, they turned around and left, returning to the edge of the herd to doze off again.
Unbeknownst to them, they had let the most dangerous entity to the herbivores on the planet get past them.
