Chapter 309: Chapter 309: Illusion

The next day, the morning sun hung at the edge of the horizon. Most of the members of this Super Mega Herd had already woken up from a short slumber and had resumed their grazing.

Sherone strolled through the midst of these creatures with curiosity in his eyes. He passed by a red buffalo that was emanating some serious heat waves. The buffalo was busy munching on some succulent grass, unaware of who just passed him.

So many creatures living in harmony, they weren’t fighting for resources since there was an abundance.

Sherone continued walking, taking advantage of the daylight to carefully observe these creatures.

Above him, the owl leader who had found a place to rest yesterday night, was now high above, observing the herd with him.

Owls were nocturnal creatures but for His Majesty’s sake, the owl leader would adjust.

Kael or Sherone noticed that the zebras were the most commonly seen members of this Super Mega Herd, followed by the wildebeests, then the buffaloes and the antelopes. The rarest were the giraffes who were simply very impressive to see.

He could see that each creature formed their own small group as they ate the grasses and whatever nutritious herbs they could find.

The zebras were mostly minding their own businesses, moving around in their family units and they searched for a free spot to eat from.

The wildebeests on the other hand seemed quite calm and level-headed in this place. Their steps were slow and lazy, and their body language showed signs of familiarity from being exposed to a comfort zone for too long.

They might have been the first to get here and have been grazing on this patch of land for the longest.

The buffalos were doing their own thing, mostly throwing their weight around and chasing anyone who was in a spot that they fancied. The greener the pasture, the greedier they became.

Perhaps, the only reason they could do this was because of the absence of the elephants.

The giraffes were also on their own. They did not need to compete with the others for grasses that were on the ground when their king necks allowed them to feed on the leaves of the trees. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

This was another reason why the giraffes were so scarce when looking around. All of them were close to the trees, and the trees in the wild plains were not that much to begin with.

The antelopes, the smallest creatures in this herd, were the subject of bullying from the buffaloes and the zebras.

Still, they made do with their numbers and the little groups that they had. The food source here for them was still abundant and everywhere they went, they would still see a spot to eat succulent grass from.

Sherone continued walking through the herd, having a place in mind, he was followed by some mares who still thought he was the same person.

They had noticed his unnatural quietness and his change in demeanor, but they didn’t think too much about it. They still need someone to lead them or else they would be lost.

Although they occasionally stopped to feed on any nice plants they found, they still kept Sherone’s form in mind and continued following him.

Other zebras that were in the zebra herd have already gone to do their own thing. Mating calls could be heard as zebras chased relentlessly after the females.

Some pregnant females were looking for places where they could wait to go into labor as the time was getting close.

Sherone didn’t mind these mares following him. It would have looked weird if he was not in any group and might have raised some suspicions.

As long as they didn’t stand in his way, he treated them as if they were not there. After all, his mission right now did not concern them.

Sherone reached his destination, a strange-looking tree that had all its branches high, beyond the reach of shorter creatures.

This tree was currently surrounded by giraffes who casually ate from the top leaves with ease and without competition.

Most of these giraffes were ordinary but even ordinary giraffes could kill ordinary lions with ease so, in terms of base power level, they were slightly above if calculated.

One of these giraffes, however, was different from the rest. This giraffe had beautiful green patterns on his body instead of the usual reddish brown that giraffes usually have.

The giraffe had the aura of greenery and lush vegetation. Sherone could see that his powers were related to plant life, just like Nalii.

"Good day," Sherone called out to the green-patterned giraffe from below. He looked up, realizing that his giraffe was taller than the others.

The green-patterned giraffe, who had been busy tearing some green leaves from the branches, looked down with a calm gaze.

"No, I’m not helping you reach the leaves. Leave me alone," The giraffe said with an annoyed expression. It seemed this was not the first time another ’short’ creature was coming to him and it seemed they had been coming to him for the same reason.

"Sorry, but I don’t need any leaves," Sherone said. If any zebra from before was present, they would notice Sherone’s voice was slightly different.

They had not noticed it before because he barely said more than two words at the same time, but here, it was very apparent.

Unfortunately, the giraffe did not know Sherone before so he had no way to tell that something was wrong with him.

"I have an offer," Sherone said, "I want to offer you power,"

Sherone’s words caused the green-patterned giraffe to frown. This was the first time that any creature was talking to him like this and with such seriousness. There was something about the way the zebra talked that made him feel the need to listen.

"I don’t understand," The giraffe said honestly. The other ordinary giraffes also looked over, wondering what kind of conversation could get their leader to continue talking with this shorty.

Yes, to them, everyone was a shorty.

Perhaps, except for the elephants.

"I represent a power that exists beyond this herd. A power that is very dangerous and very destructive. A power that wishes to change the world we live in," Sherone began.

A spirit energy wave erupted from his mind as the giraffe was immediately and the other giraffes were drawn into a trance-like state.

An illusion began to play in their minds.

They saw a golden lion, a being of immense power, and by his side stood lionesses and vague lion princes.

He stood on the peak of a mountain, looking down upon the world with a mix of disdain and benevolence. How could someone look so wicked and kind at the same time?

At the bottom of the mountain were different creatures from different races, there were bears, wolves, goats, foxes, hyenas, buffaloes, zebras...

All creatures of the beastly nature seemed to be present, all except the giraffe. The long neck that was supposed to represent the giraffe race was absent.

This scene in the illusion forcefully evoked a deep feeling of fear and uncertainty, as if their future was going to be unstable because of the absence of this giraffe.

"The kingdom is coming, we wish to bring one true harmony among all creatures, no more hunting, no more predators. Everyone shall be grass eaters like us..."

The illusion showed scenes of lions and giraffes living side by side. Those fangs that they were so scared of were gone and the lions bent down to eat the grass just like other herbivores. There was no need to fight, everything was peaceful.

Everything was harmonious.

The giraffes that were sucked into this illusion now had a stupid smile on their faces. They had completely forgotten how impossible what they were seeing was.

Sherone continued, "But for us to reach such a level of harmony, we need cooperation from all creatures of the world.

Don’t you want the world to be at peace? For blood to stop being spilled? How many times did you see your loved ones being eaten by those predators?

Wouldn’t you take the first opportunity to watch the world grow into one that your children can grow in?"

Sherone’s words were magnetic, instantly drawing the giraffes into a deeper level of delusion. His words were not all that much, but when added to the carefully tailored illusion he had silently been preparing,

The giraffes, having been caught in the manifesting web of illusion, were momentarily unable to tell their left from right.

"But! We lack a little more drive, we lack you.

Join us, take the giraffe race to a height of glory and honor among the other races as you join us in our quest to bring peace and harmony to the whole world. Be the pioneer that would be remembered for the rest of history.

Of course, there will be benefits for joining us."

The whole illusion was already doing the work of dismantling their defenses but those final words from Sherone absolutely demolished whatever hold they had over their strong will.

As images of beautiful fruits and exotic female giraffes entered their heads, their hearts began to beat wildly.

Sherone wore a knowing smirk on his face
