Reincarnated as a Novel's Villain: Creator of Curses and Blessings-Chapter 57: I’m here to become a guard
’’Where do you come from? Show your face,’’ a demon guard said in a cold voice.
Hector smiled and took off his hood, revealing his pale face.
’’Common demon?’’ The guard frowned for a moment, then nodded.
’’Alright, you can go.’’
Hector nodded and stepped into the city along with his fellows. Actually, demons had a strict hierarchy.
A white-faced demon was considered average in the demon world. He could have chosen another rank to disguise as, but it wouldn’t work, since higher-ranking demons possessed many unique traits that artifacts were unable to copy.
It would have been better if he had chosen more carefully.
Hector glanced around and spotted an inn.
’’We’ll act at midnight.’’
Roy and the others nodded.
Three hours later.
Hector stood by the window, quietly observing the city. Then his gaze finally shifted to the mountain in the middle of it.
Nearby, Roy spoke while peeling an apple.
’’We need to do something about that stupid bastard. He was about to start a fight with a demon just to save a human slave.’’
Hector nodded. Actually, Carl was a big troublemarker. He was quite stupid and reckless, but he was strong— even stronger than Hector.
He was their trump card when the situation became desperate.
’’Tell him to protect that NPC. You and I will act at midnight.’’
At that time, everything grew silent as the moon rose. They began.
Hector and Roy stood on top of the roof, watching everything.
’’Let’s go.’’
The shadowy figures flashed from one roof to another beneath the dark midnight. Occasionally, Hector and Roy killed some lone demons wandering in a dark alley to strengthen their mana cores.
Even if the increase wasn’t much, it was still better than doing nothing.
Roy, with his expensive tools, helped a lot in scouting the city and infiltrating the zone surrounding the mountain.
After several hours, they finally found a place where they could slip in and get close to the mountain.
Yet, there was a big problem.
A large number of demons were guarding the area, as if they were protecting something important.
’’This is bad. There’s no way for us to get in if those guards are still there,’’ Roy said, his voice carrying a hint of seriousness.
Hector frowned as he weighed the possibility of killing them to reach the base of the mountain.
Zero percent.
’’Indeed, it’s an impossible mission.’’
Hector sighed, then asked Roy,
’’Do you see anything else near that place that we can exploit?’’
Roy hesitated for a moment before replying.
’’Actually, yes, but I don’t think you want to hear it.’’
He let out a dull sigh and continued,
’’There are two demons with nine green mana cores living behind that wall. My item has never been wrong when sensing strong guys.’’
Hector’s expression darkened even further.
With five mana cores, he could barely handle a seven–mana-core demon, but now there were two with the power of nine mana cores.
It was clear they couldn’t resolve this mission with raw violence.
Hector rubbed his chin, thinking through everything they could exploit.
After a moment, he reached a conclusion: they had to become guards to infiltrate through the wall around the mountain.
’’Retreat!’’
***
Just like that, another day ended. Hector assigned Roy to scout for clues in the city, then report back to him at midnight in a secret place, since once he became a guard, his freedom would be restricted by the city’s rules.
’’Your mission is to protect our fellows. Don’t let him die... Once your mission fails, the entire initial plan will be ruined. The campaign to eliminate the demons will be over. Do you hear me?’’
Carl nodded seriously.
’’Yes, sir. I’ll protect him at any cost.’’
Hector added,
’’Don’t act recklessly. I know you want to save people, but it’s useless. You must be aware of that. Where are we? The lair of demons, not humans. Think bigger. If we succeed in drawing the map, we’ll be one step closer to ending the endless war among the races. Just focus on the mission.’’
Carl hesitated for a moment, then nodded again.
’’I will.’’
Hector nodded to the others and left the inn.
He headed toward the center of the city, where they were recruiting guards for the mighty wall surrounding the mountain.
For some reason, they were always recruiting demons, as if the guards were never enough to protect that place.
’’Tch, hard to understand.’’
Hector stepped forward and spoke to the demon sitting on a chair inside the building.
The demon was dozing off, ignoring everything around him. Still, Hector could sense that he was only pretending.
’’I’m here to become a guard.’’
The demon yawned and lazily pointed his thumb behind him.
’’Go ahead... Your number’s four hundred. Don’t die before the exam’s over, and you’ll be one of us.’’
Hector nodded and stepped into the basement of the building, a place connected to a vast underground arena.
Twenty minutes later.
He found himself inside a large cage after passing through the basement. He narrowed his eyes as countless psychic screams echoed loudly.
Countless demons yelled, cheering for others to kill each other.
There wasn’t just one cage, but many others, as if this place was built for entertainment rather than recruiting guards.
Pure slaughter.
He could even see high-ranking demons sitting in the stands, watching the cages, while humans crawled around to carry light snacks. Some humans were even treated like animals in cages. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢
’’HAHAHAHAHA! I’LL KILL YOU AND TAKE A POSITION ON THE MIGHTY WALL!’’ a demon shouted, staring at Hector with crazed eyes.
He licked his sword and slowly approached Hector like an experienced predator.
Hector merely shrugged and summoned his pure black sword.
’’DIE!’’
The demon rushed forward, thrusting his sword straight toward Hector’s chest.
But he suddenly staggered and collapsed like a broken puppet, his beheaded head rolling against the chains of the cage.
’’So boring.’’
Hector clicked his tongue, glancing at the corpse with indifference.
Ting!
