Chapter 12 - Working village.

"What is this?" Jared asked with a robotic look on his face.

"The working tools in the village. You requested that I get them for you," William replied.

Jared took another glance inside the sack, and just like before, he was deeply disappointed.

Not only were the metals rotten, but most of them also looked to have been hundreds of years old, as if they were once weapons used by ancient demons or curses.

'Father, how on earth did you survive like this?' Jared whispered to himself, his hand gently placed on his head.

"Lord Jared?" Lucy called out. "Is there something wrong?"

Hearing Lucy talk, William couldn't help but stare. Lucy was definitely more beautiful, but it wasn't just that—her entire aura had changed.

Being the village's only male warrior, William wanted nothing more than to know her secret.

How was she chosen by Lord Jared to be the only one to awaken as a five-star?

Jared suddenly stood up from the log he was seated on.

"Sigh! Just gather all the males in the village. I'll be right back. You all should wait for me." He began to walk away.

"Oh, I'll come—"

"No need to come along. Just do as I say."

Lucy stepped back, her sadness not hiding itself from her face.

Once Jared was gone and Lucy was about to attend to the task given to her, William stole the opportunity.

He was about to place his hand on her shoulder to halt her, but he remembered how nasty Lucy could get when someone touched her without permission.

"Lucy, wait..." William used his words instead.

Lucy turned around.

"I have a question. I hope you'll answer me honestly..."

"William? Is something the matter?" Lucy asked, simply because she and William barely ever spoke, especially since she defeated him in a duel.

"Recently, you awakened as a five-star, and the young Lord had a direct effect on that. My question is, how were you chosen? Did the young Lord simply just pick you out of formality, or did you prove yourself worthy?"

Lucy frowned a bit. "What are you trying to say?"

"Nothing really. I just want to know the process. I do believe if it's born from formality, then the rest of us deserve the same treatment. Each of us wants the growth of the village on equal footing. It wouldn't be fair if you were the only one who got to have an awakening."

"I don't know what made him choose me either. If you're that curious, then you should ask him yourself," Lucy said, turning around. "And just so you know, questioning Lord Jared's way of doing things is not something I'll easily overlook. I'm sure he has his reasons for everything he does."

And with that, she walked away.

William stood there, carrying a calm look on his face while tightly holding his staff.

He held no deep hatred towards Lucy, but still, he could not deal with the fact that Jared chose Lucy of all people to be the one to get awakened.

He wanted to be the one chosen for such a task.

A few hours later, thirty men stood before the entrance of the village. Some were totally confused, and others were curious as to why their lord had asked for them.

The rest of the females were handling the plucking of the good crops that had made it through the harvest, while others were simply doing the regular chores in the village.

Set in front of the group was a table and chair, assigned for Jared to sit on.

William and Lucy flanked both sides.

Before Jared approached the crowd, he had bought a few pieces of equipment from the system to replace the old and rotten ones the village had.

From huge jackhammers to cutlasses and other tools, he spent 600 SPs.

[Current SP: 1500 SP.]

For Jared, it was a good investment, considering among the equipment he bought, there were some that would absolutely blow the minds of the villagers.

"Good morning, fellow villagers," Jared began.

"As you know, we are facing a lot of issues in the village currently, but a few stand out from the rest—that being the attacks from magic beasts recently."

The villagers all carried a firm expression, trying to understand what could be coming next.

"We can't have that keep happening. Not when we are just starting to rise as a community. As such, I have come up with a way we can protect ourselves."

Jared began to explain what he intended to do—how he wanted to create an electric fence around the village with enough power to zap magic beasts if they got too close.

The villagers found it unbelievable at first, but considering what Jared had done in the short amount of time since his return, it wasn't too far-fetched.

"As such, we should resume work immediately. Building a fence around the village is our top priority above all other things. Are you willing to assist me?" Jared asked.

Lucy instantly raised her hand, indicating she would stand by him.

[Lucy – Loyalty (100%)]

William did the same.

[William – Loyalty (57%)]

One by one, the villagers began to raise their hands, all wanting to support Jared, but even more, wanting to see their village finally grow.

Their desperation to no longer suffer from a lack of growth was one of the reasons they were quick to accept Jared's abilities.

[The villagers want to support you.]

[You have gained 570 SPs.]

Jared smiled, both hands on the table as he stood up from his chair.

"Yosh! That's good. I promise you all are going to enjoy this. I can tell you have dedication—it must be why my father never gave up until his last breath. Come, let's do this together. I believe in you guys."

"Ywahhhhhh!"

They all chanted.

A few hours later.

Jared stood at a distance, watching as the villagers all collapsed to the ground.

'What the fuckin' hell?' he whispered, a deadpan look on his face.
