Every excitement Jared had felt beforehand began to clear up as he stared at the system with a dead expression.
The images that played before him were white with no character design or face; they had only body type, relating to the RPG games Jared was used to playing.
But at the moment, Jared was more focused on how ridiculously expensive the prices were. He could save for 50 years and still not get enough money to buy one.
'Then again, I shouldn't expect such a thing to be so cheap.' He sighed, 'Oh well, buying a human would make people suspicious of me anyway. It can wait.'
He began to click the screen in front of him, navigating through the pages to search for what he could get for the village to make it any better.
Jared knew there were two things he had to prioritize first: the farmland he had and a gate around the village due to the frequent magic beast attacks.
When his father was still alive, he had tried building a fence around the village to stop monsters from entering at night and killing people before morning.
Of course, that only worked for a couple of days. After a while, the fence gave out, and ever since then, it had no longer worked against the monsters.
And since magic beasts were known to carry unfiltered mana around them due to the magic crystal in their body, their presence began to poison the farmland, making it hard to grow anything healthy.
Jared kept on searching, scrolling and scrolling to see if he could find anything helpful.
In all honesty, he knew he could get help from the other villages around him in the meantime, but the moment they found out his father was dead, they would most likely try to take the village from him.
That was simply the rule of the Northerners: the more villages you conquered, the stronger, more feared, and more respected you became.
Jared's eyes widened, the realization hitting him that it wouldn't take long for their neighbors to find out about the death of his father.
In which case, if they were to launch an attack, he had no way of protecting himself or the village.
Jared was weak. By far, his magic powers were said to be one star at best—pathetic for a man of his age.
People were often measured by stars based on how strong they were.
For example, Lucy was the strongest in the village by far, and she was only 4 stars. Having the ability to wield two daggers made her formidable, but when compared to people who were 7 stars, she was nothing.
Not until she at least awakened.
'All my work will be useless if I don't have a means to protect it. If I remember correctly, someone from the neighboring village recently attained five stars, meaning they awakened.'
Jared scratched the back of his head.
'I guess I have no choice.'
He clicked the screen, and the product appeared before him.
[Character upgrade hack - 700sp.]
While looking for a way to upgrade a person's star, Jared ran into a couple of other projects that gave him other possibilities, but this was by far the best.
With a single hack, he could increase the rank of a person, taking them up a star or two, depending on their affinity.
Normally, it would take a person a very long time to think of ever advancing to five stars and any star above that.
But with this product—
Jared clicked on the product.
[You have purchased a Character upgrade hack.]
[700sp has been deducted.]
[350sp left.]
He stared at the product in his inventory. He didn't seem quite happy, but it was for a different matter.
The fact that he was willing to spend 700sp from his money on Lucy was killing him.
Sure, he could use it on himself, but he wasn't much of a fighter, at least not yet. Giving the upgrade to someone who was already used to protecting the village seemed more logical.
And besides, it was another way to assert his dominance over her.
The next day, Jared invited Lucy to his room.
While he was seated on the bed, he allowed Lucy to stand at the side, her eyes fixed on him.
"It's very rare for you to tell me to come so early in the morning. Is everything alright, Lord Jared?" Lucy asked, though from her facial expression, it wasn't that hard to tell she was being sarcastic.
Jared kept his eyes on the system before him, his fingers dancing on the screen.
All Lucy could see was Jared tapping the air; there was nothing in front of him.
Suddenly, she gasped and covered her mouth. "Oh no, has the young master finally gone insane?"
"The hell do you mean finally?" Jared gave her the side eye.
"I was trying to make a joke. To cheer you up. Are you cheered up?" Lucy tilted her head to the side.
"You so graciously touched my heart."

"Really?!"
"No.."
Jared looked at her again. "I know I should have asked this a while back, but did they... come to take anyone else from our village?"
Lucy opened her mouth, as if to say something, then she closed her mouth and forced out a smile.
"No, we haven't heard from them ever since you left."
Of course, Jared knew she was lying.
"Come here," he said.
Lucy leaned forward.
Swiftly, Jared grabbed her by the chin and pulled her close as he whispered,
"Never lie to me again. I really don't like it when pretty girls tell lies."
That should have frightened Lucy; she never expected Jared to act like that. Yet, her face turned red just at the fact he manhandled her.
She gulped down her saliva, her hand slightly grabbing his.
"I-I'm sorry," Lucy said, trying to hide her face as she looked to the side.
"Good, now that we are clear on that, I'll ask you that question again. But first, how would you like to upgrade your rank?"
