Chapter 39: Discourse

Aeli watched as she created the force field and couldn’t believe it when she saw that it had been broken by the magic of an element she had no affinity with. She stood there watching. Darius looked back, he was watching some people, he nodded and then turned his face away.

"Did he see us?"

"Apparently this magic has no effect on him."

"It doesn’t matter, he’ll definitely join my house."

In the arena, Professor Aeli dismissed everyone, the tests were over and they would have to wait a few days to find out if they had passed.

Darius was waiting for the others, the six of them went to the house together, the others went to the factory, they were living there, so it made work easier.

The adventurers were also living in the factory. They didn’t stop working for the Guild, they took the opportunity to improve their skills, since escort service didn’t allow them to improve. Gradually they managed to reach the S-rank, Darius, Nyme, Ava, Thali, and Eryn reached the A-rank, then they continued to accumulate points, but were unable to move up a rank due to their age, the eldest was 13 and the minimum age for this rank is adulthood, so he would have to wait another 2 years to be promoted.

Kaly was still in SS, since he was the highest, there are four people in this rank in the whole continent. In S there are only 20, these ranks are very difficult to reach, maintaining is easier, as you only need A-rank missions every 60 days to continue, or at least five B-rank missions in a 30-day period.

Darius was tired, he had been trying hard for the last few days, but he felt as if all the effort had been in vain, he hadn’t put any effort into the test, he had only used part of the skill and yet it seemed as if he had outdone the teachers.

The Academy gives prestige to those who graduate, as well as guaranteeing a good job, as he is a merchant this is not something he wants, but it is something that is expected of the son of a nobleman. So he had to enter the Academy.

The next day, in a meeting room. The principal was all bloodied up, his arm was being healed by a mage, he was taking high healing potions, but they were working slowly.

"What happened?" A man with green hair and round glasses asked.

"I was investigating that student. I found out that he’s the Guild’s potions supplier, as well as owning the paper store."

"So your family is very talented."

"No, I mean... they are. But not in this case, as far as I can make out, he’s the alchemist and craftsman at the factory and store."

"He does everything? That’s a bit hard to believe," said a woman in a pink hat, she was drinking tea.

A man in blue clothes looked at her and thought before speaking.

"It makes sense, at least a little. He looked at me, as if he knew I was there, the invisibility magic had no effect on him. If he’s that talented, it’s possible that he really did know we were there."

"There’s one more thing, I visited the village that is his family’s domain. The houses were big and well made, if I looked at them without knowing the location, I’d say they were noblemen’s houses. I visited the factory, and that’s when I was attacked, it has a barrier that I couldn’t break, when I tried, a golem attacked me and that’s why I’m injured."

"He protects well, that’s high-level magic. Even with his skills, how did he manage to keep something like that?" The woman continued to drink tea.

"He has five of the 20 S-rank mages on the continent, plus he has a member of his team who is SS-rank," said a woman who was standing up.

"What do you mean?" The director asked, and as he turned to look at the desk, he felt pain in his shoulder.

"I did the research you asked me to, I got this information from the Guild with some adventurers. He has two adventurers in his store and the others escort the products and protect the factory. The SS-ranked one is his teacher, she was the woman who humiliated the jacks in the tournament a few years ago."

"Considering that strength, he has plenty of power to raise an army."

"That’s all you think about."

"Isn’t that what we’re here for?" The man in the blue suit got up and left the room, he was angry.

"He’s always like that, I can’t understand how someone with that personality got this position," said the woman in the hat.

A man wearing a green suit stood up.

"He’s right, this kid is intriguing, he has money and power, I just hope he’s on our side, or neutral."

"Neutral?"

"What’s his mana? Our equipment couldn’t measure it, that information would be useful for assessing his magical power. He broke the test plate, so we don’t know anything more about his magic. He’s stronger than any other student who’s been here."

"I can break the plate."

"That’s the point, we’re the teachers, we’re expected to be the strongest, but even our mana is detected by the equipment. He has more mana than any teacher, he’s an adventurer with an SS-rank teacher, and even the teacher of the adventurer subject is weaker than her. If he wants, he can try to attack us with his military power."

"You always think of the worst possible situation, you worry a lot. It’s common for nobles to have an army, one more won’t make any difference. Even if he doesn’t want to join up, it’s unlikely that he’ll want to attack the Kingdom and still manage to convince his adventurers to do so," the principal said as he stood up. "I’m going to my room, we’ll soon know his intentions and we’ll try to recruit, your brothers are one step away from agreeing to be recruited."

The Academy of Magic was a place where the strongest people in the Kingdom taught. Only the best in each field entered to teach, so the Academy was used to find the most promising students so that they could be recruited into the royal army; the best were always guaranteed a job.

That’s why it was always a dispute between the leaders to call the best to the clans. There were five clans at the Academy. The Green Mantis clan was commanded by Count Cedri Everhart, the Coral Kirin clan was commanded by Baroness Cae Rose, the Black Serpent clan was commanded by Viscountess Syl Beau, the Blue Unicorn clan was commanded by Knight Row Mont, and the last and lowest in the hierarchy, the Red Jackalope clan, commanded by Baron Perc Tague.

The clans had a hierarchy within the Academy, with each achievement they received stars and with them they were able to rise, the clan with the most stars in the year received an award, as well as internal prestige.

Each student was selected by a clan, and if more than one leader chose the same student, it was up to the student to choose which clan they wanted to join. Students who weren’t chosen were left without a clan and they could get together and try to win stars, but they never achieved prominence.

It would be common to imagine that all those chosen would join a clan, but because of their personality and ability, some students ended up being excluded by the leaders. That’s why it was common for the leaders to stay hidden and observe the exam.

A few days passed and the list of successful students came out. Darius came first in magic, swords, archery, and the written test. Nyme and Zenith came second and third in each exam, and the others came next. All six managed to come first. They should wait a few more days to start studying. Darius was bored, he hadn’t felt this way for a long time.

The last time he felt boredom was in his last life, when he was always learning something new and training to become stronger. So boredom took over his body, he was strong, intelligent and rich. He no longer had any goals, he was gradually taken over by a routine that made him like this.

Lucian was very happy with Darius’ position, who had surpassed all the brothers at the same time. But Darius was normal, he didn’t feel happy about it, because he didn’t make an effort.

On the first day of school, all the students went to the auditorium and it was common for the student who came first to give a speech. But Darius refused, he said he didn’t want to and the principal kept insisting. Darius refused once again and there was no way out, he ended up accepting.

Darius stood up to make his speech, he remained silent for a few seconds and then began to speak.

"I don’t have much to say, just that I expected more from the exam, I took less than 5 minutes in it. Even I’m capable of doing something more elaborate, apart from the lack of preparation for the exams, it was a mess and they put in equipment that can’t measure mana and plates to assess magic that breaks easily. What’s more, I was annoyed and distracted by the teachers staring at us, they used magic so weak that anyone could see it," he thought. "I expect everyone to do their best, that’s all I have to say," was the shortest speech in the Academy’s history.
