Reincarnated as the fourth son of a noble and tamed an SS-rank dragon-Chapter 40: First day at Academy
The auditorium was silent, some teachers were laughing quietly, they found the situation too funny to ignore, the principal looked at them and his gaze had no authority.
He began to speak and gave an impromptu speech, after a few minutes he realized that people were bored and the teachers were talking in a low tone, the sound was low enough for no one to hear, but it managed to get the director’s attention, his hearing was very sharp, not like Darius’, but compared to the others he had one of the best auditions.
After a while explaining how the Academy worked, he introduced the clans and began to talk about the advantages of being chosen. Darius couldn’t see any, just a series of obligations, such as competing with the others for stars, staying after hours to earn more points and thus improve his chances of getting a job, as well as mission work, similar to the Guild, with the disadvantage of not being paid.
He realized that the clans were a way of forcing the students to become stronger and thereby improve the Kingdom in military power. He could sense this when he remembered a certain totalitarian regime that used young people to improve the country according to the dictator. The difference was that they weren’t oppressing a minority. But a monarchy and a dictatorship weren’t that different, at least for those who had lived most of their lives in a democratic system.
Darius was thinking too much about the politics of his old world, he should just focus on the current world, he knew that, but these comparisons were automatic.
"We’ll do it in order of score," the director was saying about the choice of clans.
When the director mentioned Darius’ name, he quickly raised his hand.
"What happens if someone refuses to join a clan?"
"It’s possible that no leader chooses someone, if that happens that person is left without a clan and can take part in competitions with other people without a clan, but without the privileges of being in one. But not accepting to be in a clan is rare."
"That doesn’t answer the question, please. I kindly ask for an answer."
The principal scowled, he hadn’t expected a student to talk like that, even if he was polite, he hadn’t expected a question like that.
"The student can choose not to enter, he’ll be the same as the others without clans."
"Thanks for the answer," Darius said as he approached the center of the auditorium, all the leaders raised their hands.
"Which clan will you choose?"
"None, I don’t have time to spend after school."
The best student in the class refused the invitation from all the leaders. The principal kept insisting, but Darius said he wouldn’t change his mind and told him not to be so inconvenient.
Then it was Nyme’s turn, everyone raised their hand and she refused. All six refused. This was unheard of, the top six in the rankings turning down invitations. The students paid close attention to this, they listened to the justifications, but they knew that they couldn’t afford to refuse because being part of a clan would mean that they might have a chance of a job in a high position, especially those students who won’t inherit their father’s title.
The principal was furious, he once again insisted that Darius and the others go back.
"You sound like those losers who got dumped and couldn’t get over it," Zenith said loudly, the principal turned red and the teachers and students laughed.
"You tried to break into my factory and now you’re begging me to do something you want. Don’t you think that’s very petulant?"
"He’s right, you’re lucky we didn’t take the complaint any further, but Lucian Lestor and a few other nobles know about your trespassing habit. If you continue to harass us, or if you enter the village again, we promise we won’t be so compassionate with you."
The students and teachers kept talking, the principal was speechless, he couldn’t argue, he was just scared when he heard that they knew about it.
A teacher stood up and took the principal’s place, he acted as if nothing had happened. He began to explain how the lessons would go and what was expected of each of the students.
Darius was calm, he enjoyed seeing the principal’s reactionless expression. He became serious when he heard the teacher say that conflicts within the Academy would be resolved by dueling, so they could solve almost any problem.
Darius began to think of some uses for this, since there were so many possibilities to take advantage of. Even more so if the principal continued with his childish and strange behavior.
When the presentation was over, everyone went to their classrooms; they would start class immediately.
The first lesson was potions, and a teacher with messy blue hair walked in. She was wearing clothes that didn’t suit her, as well as using a large staff. Darius stared at her and thought she had made a mistake, because the class wasn’t going to be about magic. But she was in the right room, she was Frag Arm, an alchemist.
She was the best alchemist in the Kingdom until one day she lost her position to the alchemists who sold potions to the Adventurers’ Guild. She was never able to produce potions at the price charged by the Guild, and as a result, she was only able to sell a few potions, as a result, her store dwindled to just a small store that could barely support itself.
She began her presentation, she rambled on for a while, and within an hour she had actually begun to explain the content she was to teach. After a few minutes she asked someone to get up and go to the table. Nyme stood up and the teacher began to explain how a potion should be made, as well as the techniques. She asked Nyme to make a potion with the materials on the table, she could consult the book for that.
"I don’t need a book," she said as she cut and crumpled a sheet of paper on the table.
She was doing the preparation quickly and the teacher was watching her technique, she was quick and followed all the steps, even without following the book.
"Have you done this before?"
"I’ve made a few potions, but not this one. We only make healing and energy potions."
"Healing?" She paused. "Don’t tell me you work for the Guild."
"No, I work for Darius Lestor, we just sell potions for the Guild."
The teacher kept quiet, she had a huge grudge, but she couldn’t humiliate a student.
Nyme continued the preparation and in the end, she had the potion finished.
"This is a rare potion, but it’s very easy to make," she wanted to take advantage of this situation to slightly humiliate Nyme with her failure to make it, as the potion was on the list of the most difficult to create. "I’ll drink it and see if it has any effect."
She drank it and became invisible, her clothes were still visible, she was frightened, it wasn’t often that a student managed to brew it on the first try.
She kept her composure and acted normally, even invisible she continued the lesson and explained more about the types of potions, which vary greatly and in some cases can even be used as explosive weapons. They would work like grenades but with the difference of being more effective.
Darius knew that this potion was not easy to create, Kaly had taught him all the types of potions she knew, and when he learned a new one, she quickly taught him. He knew all the levels of potions he had learned.
He soon understood that the teacher wanted Nyme to fail in some way, he just didn’t know why. That’s why he kept watching the teacher, but gradually his boredom grew, he was tired and couldn’t sit through a lesson any longer. In his past life he spent most of his time sitting in a chair studying, now he was back in the past.
He had spent two years studying politics and economics, but they were new subjects, he had no grounding, potions he knew more about than the teacher, at least Darius thought so.
Darius waited for the class to finish, when the students were leaving, he stayed in the room and approached the teacher, he only saw her clothes, not even a shadow on her body.
"Do you have any questions?" She asked as she put sheets of paper into a briefcase.
"No, I just wanted to say that I know what you tried to do, I hope it won’t happen again, or I’ll have to take action."
"What do you mean?"
"You tried to humiliate a friend of mine, the potion wasn’t easy and there’s a high chance of error, luckily she’s a more skilled alchemist than you," he said as he turned and left the room.
The teacher was paralyzed, she was frightened by the look in Darius’ eyes and at the same time she had no reaction to the threat he had made.
