Chapter 108: Chapter 108

"Chose your words wisely now." I say as I take in the person in front of me, having Ethan nodding softly in the shadows while standing by behind them as we both did the same thing and try to find the second presence we were sensing there, but my eyes quickly go back to the woman when she pulls out a huge double edge axe from her back and opens her legs a little more wide, ready to get into action at any moment.

I narrow my eyes at her defensive stance and widen my legs as well, which only makes the tension increase to a palpable level.

The woman in front of me clearly has a high level of power and I could tell that by her posture alone, adding to that the sharp gaze and the strong build-up muscles apparent on a sleeveless shirt, the dark grey skin color contrasting with the two pair of huge horns going back towards her pointy ears and white curls, which only added to her ferocious wild appearance when the hair responded to her mood and changed color right in front of me, tunning to a bright red currently.

Neat trick, I wonder what colors it can turn into, not that it would matter much if she turns out to be an enemy.

"Ahh, impatient little ones we have here don’t we." She says, and I can tell the reason she lisps the Rs and Ss is that the lower teeth are bigger and sharper than the others, like an orcs tusks but not so big as to go out of her mouth, and it also gives her a growly voice that catches me off guard. "Guess I shall oblige and beat the crap out of you first then."

Her grip on the double huge axe hardens as a smile spreads on her face, eager for a fight and good at it if the muscles and scars all over her body can be an indication of that.

"For someone who is spying on others like a fifth scavenger you talk like you deserve any respect." Ethan says, and even if the plan was to get her surrounded he seems very uneased and angry about her threatening me like this so he leaves his place to stand beside me, black blade in hands and a fierce glint in his eyes that promised hell under the shadow of his mask, the pleasant smirk as superficial as her cordiality.

One more hot headed added to the mess, but I guess I should have expected him to act up before thinking.

The tension between the two grows with the sudden silence, gazes crossed as if their blades were already clashing against each other, both sides stepping to the side to open up space for a sparring match that, by the once over each one gives to the other, they seemed eager to test the other capabilities, like a pair of predators finally finding something more than prey to clash against.

Ah, I see what they remind me of now, they look like two peacocks fighting, flustering their tails, showing off while sharpening their claws and trying to peek each other’s eyes out.

Or, more simply put, like two macho men fighting for no more reason than the fight itself.

I sigh, taking my fan out and ready to whip the air between then and put some sense back into their thick heads, and maybe ’accidentally’ hit them both in the process, when something stops us all one the spot.

Until, there is, we hear a yawn coming from behind her.

"What is all this ruckus about? I was having such a nice nap and- Oh, well, would you look at that, they... they came right after us didn’t they, aww..." I look at where the voice is coming from, talking to himself as if unsure that we were truly there, and running out of tolerance yet keeping my image as always I open up my fan with a clang and start moving it ever so slowly in front of me, showing off just how little the situation disconcerted me.

But what I did not expect is to see a baby fox poke its little face and black twitching snout out from the barbarian woman’s shoulder, his almond eyes shinning back at me on his small face and black furred body.

"Hellou everybody, no, no need for violence or anything you know, we just want to uhm... chat, that’s all." He nods to himself as if satisfied with the outcome, and such a childish naïve behavior confuses me, but makes me raise my guard too.

It couldn’t be a rouse, could it? It definitely should, in such a place, full of demons and the unknown.

The small creature who had been sleeping on her bag all this time stretches his front pawns on her shoulder, giving a baby teeth yawn, acting cute without meaning to but too small and fluffy to be taken seriously in any other way.

Been there done that my friend, being a kitty wasn’t easy for my pride I tell you.

Still even if against such small adorable creature I keep my eyes sharp when he jumps off to the ground, small paws hitting the floor with ease and standing between the two peacocks, and as if sensing their monkey brain was active he cames to me to talk, the two real animals acting like the adults as the two demons still puffed smoke at each other.

Should I give then space to settle their differences down? I’m afraid that it would take longer than we have available at the moment, so as much as it sounded like fun watching two skilled warriors battle I had business to take care of first.

"So... you were the one spying on us... why?" I ask as I close my metal fan with a clang, making the kid jump and myself frown, only for the little fox to be covered in a sudden grey smoke as he changes his appearance, soon having a little boy with black hair and eyes standing before me, puffy legs, long flustering sleeves, wooden open sandals with white socks on his feet, not a fighting outfit at all but complemented his cuteness especially when, looking down, he displayed a round face with baby fat still in it and big brown eyes, plus the long black fox ears and the furry tail whipping behind him.

Such cute child would have anyone lowering their guard on the spot but for me is the opposite, making me even more aware of the person, like they are putting too much effort into looking cute and harmless only to make you lower your guard down.

But in his case he looked genuinely... like this, I think as he gives me a full toothy smile.

Was I being paranoid? Perhaps...

"Mister Griffin, I actually think we can help each other out after all."

At that, we talk business at the sound of two growling demons.
