Chapter 1468: William’s Response

Fang ceased his lightning strikes and recalled his flying spear, the weapon humming as it returned to his hand. He was loath to burn his precious spiritual energy and materials on such worthless fodder.

"Something... must have drawn their attention elsewhere," Becky said, echoing the very thought crystallising in William’s mind.

"Those bastards must have started spreading more tides across the continent," William growled, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the suddenly thinning ranks of the enemy.

The lack of Scarlet Bears wasn’t a sign of victory; it was a sign of a shifting strategy. He turned sharply to Fang, his voice ringing with authority. "Head back and get me an update at once! I need to know exactly where the focus has shifted."

"Right away!" Fang didn’t hesitate. He became a blur of motion, flashing across the blood-soaked battlefield toward the portal that linked them to the capital.

Becky stood by William’s side, her gaze fixed on the shimmering rift that continued to pulse with dark energy, even if the monsters emerging from it were now mere fodder. "Aren’t you going to close that last portal?"

She asked, gesturing toward the gate. "I believe we won’t see any more Scarlet Bears here. They’ve sniffed out what you were doing. They realised this bottleneck was a death trap, and they’ve decided to shift their attention to softer targets."

"There is still one last service this portal will provide before we shut it down forever," William replied cryptically. He didn’t elaborate, standing with a calm, predatory stillness as he waited for Fang’s return.

When Fang finally emerged from the portal minutes later, he was breathless, his face a mask of disbelief. He quickly relayed the shocking developments: the trio’s "rebellion" at the Scorching Lands, the establishment of the Three Pillars, and the sudden, competitive expansion of the portal network led by the girls.

To Fang’s utter confusion, William didn’t look angry. He didn’t even look concerned. Instead, a slow, appreciative grin spread across his face, eventually breaking into a sharp laugh.

"I can’t believe you are enjoying this," Fang muttered, rolling his eyes. "Instead of sticking together and consolidating our strength, they are fracturing our forces and spreading us thin across the entire map. And you’re laughing?"

"You’re looking at this the wrong way, Fang," William said, finally controlling his mirth. His eyes sparkled with an intensity that made the older master take a step back.

"It seems someone—or several—finally realised that we won’t win this war by playing defence. This isn’t just a clash of armies. This is the war of all wars! This is the kind of conflict that either grinds a world into dust or elevates it to a higher plane of existence."

"You can’t be serious," Fang blinked, his voice rising in alarm. "You don’t plan on encouraging this chaos, do you?"

"Let’s speak rationally," William said, pointing toward the thousands of Scarlet Bear carcasses that stretched toward the horizon like a gruesome carpet.

"We have already found the effective countermeasure for the deadliest threat in this world. We have the spears. We have the technique. So why shouldn’t I let them compete? Why shouldn’t they spread their influence and test their mettle over the entire continent?"

He paused, looking Fang directly in the eye. "You didn’t think I planned to lay low after this war and spend the rest of my days as the sole, stagnant ruler of this world, did you?"

Fang fell silent. He realised then that he had fundamentally misunderstood William’s endgame. William’s sights were never set on a local throne; he aimed to ascend to a higher realm.

To do that, he needed the world he left behind to be strong, tempered by fire and led by those who had proven their worth in the crucible of war. By letting the girls compete, William was allowing the foundations of future kingdoms and empires to be built. He wasn’t just winning a war; he was gardening a civilisation.

"Anyway, I’ll need to send ten of my monsters over to keep Ro’s town safe," William said, a slightly bitter smile touching his lips as he realised the logistical cost of his approval. He turned to Becky. "It seems I should have produced more of them when I had the chance."

"Not my call," she shrugged, her tone indifferent. "You’re the one who decided to stop at the current number."

"So..." Fang said, trying to steer the conversation back to the immediate crisis. "The tides are appearing everywhere. Even if the girls’ plan is brilliant, it will take time for those new portals to reach full capacity. What do we do in the meantime? We can’t just stand here watching the minor monsters crawl out."

"What else?" William turned back to Becky. "Go back. I’m giving you fifteen of the monsters."

"Didn’t you just say ten for Ro?" she interrupted, but he swept past her remark with a focused intensity.

"Ten will stay with Ro to protect her base and ensure the new heart of our operations doesn’t stop beating," William commanded. "As for the other five, they will stay by your side. You are to seek out Ellina immediately. Tell her to drop everything and forge you a flying spear using the high-realm materials I secured. I need you lethal."

Becky’s expression shifted from indifference to dead seriousness. She raised an eyebrow, her voice dropping an octave. "And what exactly do you intend to do while I’m playing courier?"

William didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he turned his back to them and looked at the pulsating, dark rift of the last standing portal. The air around it distorted with a sickly, purple hue.

"Didn’t you ever ask yourselves what’s on the other side of this gate?" he asked quietly.

"You don’t mean..." Fang’s entire body trembled as the realisation hit him like a physical blow. "William, you are insane! The other side of that portal is the source! It must be a nightmare realm filled with an endless stream of Scarlet Bears and things far worse. You want to throw yourself into the middle of that?"
