Chapter 1469: It’s Indeed a Trap!

William didn’t look back. He gripped his weapon, his aura beginning to flare with a terrifying light that pushed back the shadows of the portal. "They wanted to shift the war to my home," he said, his voice cold and final. "It’s only fair I take the war to theirs."

"First of all, the other side isn’t nearly as terrifying as you imagine," William said, a jagged, predatory grin splitting his face. The dark-golden light of his aura flickered, casting long, dancing shadows against the pulsating purple of the rift. "The masterminds behind this are efficient.

They use auxiliary worlds as breeding grounds for the Scarlet Bears before funnelling them into the realms they intend to dismantle. Out there, we aren’t going to find a hellscape; we’ll find dozens of realm-scale portals. But for the two of us, that shouldn’t be much of an issue, right?"

Fang stared at him in a stunned silence. If any other master had been standing in his place, they would have likely screamed at William’s insanity or fled toward the horizon without looking back. William wasn’t just suggesting a scouting mission; he was inviting Fang to participate in a suicidal breach of the enemy’s home turf.

William’s eyes shifted, landing a short, expectant glance on Becky. He didn’t need to ask.

"I’ll go and be back the very second the spear is ready," Becky said. Unlike Fang, she didn’t flinch. There was no hesitation in her voice, only a sharp, proactive edge. Had this been the Becky of a year ago, she would have dismissed the idea as madness and retreated to save her own skin.

But William had left his mark on her spirit. Her mindset had been forged anew in his shadow, and she no longer saw the impossible as a barrier—only as a challenge.

She turned on her heel and dashed toward the portal leading back to the capital, her movements a blur of focused intent.

We won’t wait for you, William’s voice echoed in her mind through spirit telepathy, cold and pragmatic. Just pass through the monster gate when you’ve finished your tasks.

For a reason she couldn’t quite name, Becky felt a sharp pang in her chest at those words—a strange mixture of exclusion and the drive to prove she belonged at his side. She didn’t respond. She simply pushed her speed to its absolute limit, vanishing into the shimmering light of the portal to fulfil the tasks he had entrusted to her.

"Out there, we won’t have the luxury of hesitation or the time to discuss elaborate battle plans," William said, turning his attention back to Fang. His expression was now dead serious, the mirth gone from his eyes. "No matter what we find on the other side of this gate, there is one simple, crucial rule you must follow if you want to keep your life."

"And that is?" Fang asked. He began reaching into his spatial rings, withdrawing the most potent, deadliest artefacts and weapons he had accumulated over a lifetime of cultivation. His hands trembled slightly, but his grip remained firm.

"Never step outside the ring of protection provided by my monsters," William commanded. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Without waiting for an answer, William dashed toward the massive monster portal. He completely ignored the remaining weak monsters that littered the battlefield; they were beneath his notice.

The few remaining Scarlet Bears and mutated beasts that tried to intercept him were instantly torn apart by William’s personal monster guard.

As for the task of mopping up the fodder and clearing the blood-soaked field, William entrusted that Lara would handle it once they realised the area was void of the deadly bears.

Normally, a monster portal of this calibre was impossible to cross. The sheer volume of Scarlet Bears flooding out created a physical and spiritual wall that would grind any master to dust.

The only established strategy for dealing with a tide of this magnitude was to destroy the portals from the outside, then hunt down the high-level controllers hiding in the rear.

This was the first time in history that a spirit master had decided to take the leap and pass through the gate into the enemy’s territory. William knew he had a unique window of opportunity; because the bears had shifted their focus to the other tides across the continent, the pressure coming out of this specific gate had dropped significantly.

William weighed the possibilities in his mind. Either this was a calculated trap, or the enemy’s commanders were so confident in their new multi-front assault that they expected him to go chasing after the bears at the other locations.

"I’d bet on the trap," William muttered. The moment his body crossed the threshold of the portal, he felt a sickening shift in the atmosphere. The air was heavy, metallic, and saturated with a higher grade spirit power.

He instantly threw out his spirit sense, expanding it like a dome. His suspicions were confirmed in a heartbeat. Stretched out before him were endless, undulating layers of Scarlet Bears.

Thousands upon thousands of them were gathered in a massive, darkened plain, their red eyes glowing in the gloom. They weren’t moving; they were waiting. The moment William appeared, a collective growl shook the very ground, a sound of pure, unadulterated hunger.

"It indeed is a trap," Fang remarked, appearing at William’s side a second later. He looked at the horizon of claws and teeth, then gave William a dry, sideways glance. "You knew it was a setup, and yet you jumped in anyway. Is your brain truly made of stone?"

"Don’t lose sight of our primary target, old man," William replied, ignoring the jab. He settled into a low combat stance, his golden aura erupting with such force that the nearest bears recoiled. "Our goal hasn’t changed. We need to slaughter as many of these monsters as possible before they can be deployed to the girls’ fronts."

"Tsk!" Fang spat on the ground, his eyes narrowing as he readied his flying spears. He hated the reckless logic, but he couldn’t deny its effectiveness. They had spent hours fighting relentlessly to relieve the pressure on the four kingdoms, and this was simply the next logical step.
