Chapter 72: The Confession Of Love

The gloomy night of Shadowvale stretched far and wide, yet tonight, an eerie calmness blanketed the kingdom. After the chaos that had shaken its very foundations, an unusual silence settled. Every soul rested with ease, assured they were in safe hands.

But not Zara.

She sat on the balcony’s edge, her dark hair flowing like ink in the whispering breeze. A long white gown draped over her form, swaying gently, mirroring the stillness of her thoughts. Her gaze was locked on the horizon, yet her mind was lost elsewhere.

A presence.

The subtle shift in the air made her flinch, a flicker of awareness breaking her trance.

"So, what have you decided, Zara?"

The voice, calm yet expectant, made her turn.

Seraphina.

Zara’s lips parted, but words failed her.

Before she could respond, the world around her shifted.

The stone walls of her chamber dissolved into a frozen forest, kissed by both fire and ice. The branches, glazed with frost, dripped slowly, melting into silver pools beneath them. The contrast was breathtaking, yet the air crackled with an unspoken tension.

But Zara... remained calm.

Too calm.

Seraphina studied her closely, her eyes gleaming like embers.

"What do you expect me to decide?" Zara’s voice was steady, unreadable. "I am already in a place where I do not belong. So... I should do what you ask of me. That would be best for everyone, wouldn’t it?"

Her words were accepting, but her eyes. they hid something. A secret buried deep, just beneath the surface.

And Seraphina didn’t notice.

A pleased smile bloomed on the former queen’s lips.

"You have chosen wisely," she said, a flicker of satisfaction in her tone. "This is what is best... for everyone. I will not betray your trust, Zara. I will ensure you return to your world, where you truly belong."

Zara forced a small smile.

Yet, deep in her chest, a strange unease gnawed at her.

She should have felt relieved. But... she didn’t.

Seraphina stepped closer, eyes gleaming with something almost reverent.

"You were always meant to rewrite destiny. you don’t yet understand how divine you are, Zara. You will be the reason my kingdom thrives once more."

Her fingers reached forward, a breath away from Zara’s skin.

Glitch.

The air fractured.

Like a distorted reflection on shattered glass, the scene wavered. Seraphina’s form flickered, her presence vanishing in an instant.

Because they were coming.

•••

"Zara."

The sound of her name, spoken in unison, pulled her from her thoughts.

She turned, and there they were.

Devonte and Denzal.

Standing behind her, their expressions are a tangled mix of emotions, relief, concern, something deeper that even they couldn’t quite name.

Something within her broke.

Before she could think, her feet moved on their own, and the next second, she was in their arms.

Devonte caught her, His grip was firm and protective. He held her against his chest as if he feared she might disappear.

Denzal embraced her from behind.

His arms wrapped around them both, anchoring them in the moment.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

They simply held on.

Each of them clung to the other for different reasons. for the pain of what had been lost, for the uncertainty of what was to come. But among those silent fears, one loomed above all.

The fear of losing each other.

The only sound in the chamber was the steady rhythm of their heartbeats, merging into one.

Then, after what felt like an eternity, Zara lifted her head.

Devonte’s arms didn’t loosen. If anything, his grip tightened, as though reassuring himself she was still there.

Denzal cupped her face.

His fingers traced over her cheek, gentle yet firm, his thumb stroking her soft skin in a slow, deliberate motion.

He didn’t take his eyes off her.

"Do you want to tell us something, love?"

His voice was a whisper, yet it carried a weight Zara felt deep in her chest.

The word ’love’ slipped so naturally from his lips, so effortlessly, that she almost missed it.

Almost.

Denzal brought her hand to his lips, pressing a soft kiss to her palm. His touch was warm, grounding.

"You know you can tell us anything."

This time, it was Devonte who spoke.

His fingers brushed beneath her chin, lifting her gaze. His dark eyes searched hers, holding a promise within their depths.

"We swear, Zara. No matter what happens, we will stand with you."

Their voices, so gentle, so certain. made something tighten in her throat.

Zara’s gaze flickered between them, her heartbeat unsteady.

She swallowed.

"Nothing," she finally whispered. "I was just... overwhelmed after everything that happened. Those two days without you both around... I...I missed you."

Her words were quiet, but the weight they carried settled deeply in the room.

Slowly, she rested her hand over Devonte’s chest, feeling the steady beat beneath her palm.

The moment stretched. long, unspoken.

Then, they smiled. Not just any smile. a different one.

For the first time, Zara saw it. Something had changed in their eyes. A new warmth. A new depth. And it made her pulse stutter.

"Zara, we know." Devonte’s deep voice broke through the silence, his eyes locking onto hers with raw emotion. "Everything that’s been happening... it’s been too much to take in, too hard to understand."

He took a slow step closer, his gaze never wavering. "We don’t know how much you’ve figured out or what still confuses you. But there’s one thing we can assure you. no matter what has happened or what will happen next, we will protect you with our last breath. Any danger, any force that tries to harm you..." His jaw clenched. "It will have to go through us first. You are safe, Zara. And we will make sure you always will be. Just trust us. That’s all we need."

His words carried a depth of sincerity he had never openly shown before. Devonte, always the calm one, was letting his emotions spill over. for the first time.

Zara held his gaze, searching his face for any hesitation, but there was none. Then, gently, she reached for Denzal and pulled him forward. Now, both brothers stood before her, their eyes mirroring the same unspoken emotion. A feeling they had yet to put into words.

She took their hands in hers, her grip soft yet steady. A small, bittersweet smile touched her lips, through her eyes shimmered with unshed tears.

"All my life, I’ve questioned my existence," she whispered. "I never wanted to live a meaningless life, to just be born and die with no one to remember me. I searched for a reason, for my purpose. And I never found it... not until I met you two."

A single tear slipped down her cheek, but she didn’t let it break her.

"From the moment I arrived in your world, I knew," she continued. "I knew why I was here. You two showed me a side of life I had never seen before. Before this, my world was cold, lonely, lifeless. But with you both... it has never been quiet. Every day is a new battle, a new challenge. You made me stronger. You made me see my own strength. I found a new version of myself because of you two. And for that, I can never thank you enough."

Denzal and Devonte tensed beside her. Her words... they didn’t sit well with them. Something about them felt final. It was as if she were preparing to say goodbye.

Devonte parted his lips to interrupt, but she silenced him with a finger pressed gently against his lips.

"Shh. Let me speak." Her voice trembled but remained steady. "I need you to hear how I feel. Everything that has happened. it was overwhelming, unbearable at times, yes. But do I regret it?" She shook her head. "No. Not for a single second. These have been the most magical days of my life. Moments I will carry with me even beyond this life."

More tears escaped her, cascading down like silent confessions.

"And all of it made me realize something... something I never thought I would—"

"I love you, Zara."

Denzal’s sudden confession froze her in place.

Her breath caught in her throat as she looked up at him in disbelief. His voice had been firm, unwavering. The intensity in his eyes left no room for doubt.

"I love you," he repeated. "More than you can possibly imagine."

Zara barely had time to react before Devonte stepped forward, his lips curling into a gentle, knowing smile.

"So do I," he admitted, his voice softer but no less certain.

She stared at them, completely stunned.

"Wh... what?" she whispered, as if her mind refused to process their words.

Denzal smiled, pulling her closer.

"You heard us right, Zara. We love you. Deeply, madly, insanely." His thumb brushed against her cheek, wiping away a stray tear. "Not just because you’re our mate. Not because of fate, or duty, or our past connection. We love you because we choose to. Because we want you."

Devonte nodded, his voice filled with conviction. "You are the missing piece we never knew we needed. The only thing that has ever felt real in our lives. This love... it isn’t about responsibility. It isn’t about the past. It’s about you. Here. Now. As you are."

Zara’s heart pounded in her chest. She felt light-headed, overwhelmed, as if the ground beneath her had vanished.

Then, before she could react, they pulled her into a crushing embrace. Their warmth surrounded her, their steady heartbeats echoing against her own.

And that’s when it hit her.

Her breath hitched. Her eyes widened in realization.

Holy shit.

This was bad. Really bad.

This confession... this love...

It would bring her the worst kind of trouble.

Because the power she had made a deal with. the one that had sealed her fate

would never allow it.

Not now.

Not ever.

And for the first time, Zara knew she was in real, inescapable danger.
