Rotting Land: Survive-Chapter 442 - 440: Advancing Step by Step (5)
Wang Qiang tightly held the curtain in his hands to prevent the beast from pushing in.
Luckily, the piece of curtain blocked it just in time, or else the beast’s sharp teeth would have pierced his throat already.
But although the curtain is thick, it still can’t hold back the beast’s attack for long.
For now, Wang Qiang managed to wrap the beast’s head with the curtain, gaining some temporary safety.
Even a fool should know, however, that this is merely a stopgap, not a long-term solution.
The remaining Hu Xiaodong, Wu Chao, and Wei Dazhuang were equally aware of this.
But constrained by distance, rushing over with a knife to rescue was clearly too late.
In haste, Hu Xiaodong decisively grabbed a recurve bow from the rack, then nocked an arrow and drew the string.
After more than a month of leisurely recovery, he had become somewhat unfamiliar with using the bow and arrow.
Frankly speaking, whether he could kill the enemy with a single shot without injuring Wang Qiang, he wasn’t confident.
But with the arrow drawn, he had no choice but to shoot.
What’s more, given the situation, hesitation was not an option.
Calming his mind, he adjusted the direction slightly, and once the target was confirmed, Hu Xiaodong decisively released his fingers.
Immediately, the sharp arrow flew out like a dragon piercing through the clouds, slicing through the air with a sharp whistle.
One second later, Wang Qiang felt his chest sink, as black liquid trickled from the beast’s head and slid down.
"Whew~" He exhaled deeply; seeing the arrow feather lodged in the beast’s back head, Hu Xiaodong felt relieved.
But before he could lower the bow, Wei Dazhuang and Wu Chao rushed over to Wang Qiang, their faces carrying an expression of terror.
What’s going on? With limited visibility, Hu Xiaodong couldn’t clearly see the situation at the opposite corner.
Still, to be safe, he swiftly nocked another arrow and aimed at Wang Qiang’s position.
At this moment, Wang Qiang was struggling to push away the dead body on him. Just as he was about to thank Hu Xiaodong for rescuing him, his collar suddenly tightened, and he was dragged away.
"Damn! Dazhuang, Chao, what are you...."
The words stopped abruptly, and Wang Qiang’s initially bewildered expression immediately froze.
One meter ahead, just at the curtain’s location, a deep passageway revealed a flickering black shadow rapidly approaching from within.
Quickly, the first of the beasts successfully broke through the siege. It was a Runner, its swift speed giving it an advantage over its companions.
However, it hadn’t been out of the passage for more than a few seconds when an arrow, equally as quick as the wind, slipped by from the side, piercing through the Pacer’s temple and creating a hole on the other side.
With that, the unfortunate one pitched forward and fell straight down.
With one shot taking care of it, Hu Xiaodong quickly notched another arrow. This refined skill had become his instinctual response.
Sure enough, as he nocked the arrow, a Runner burst out.
In haste, Hu Xiaodong didn’t think much and promptly released the string he had just pulled up.
Unfortunately, perhaps due to his rush, Hu Xiaodong’s hurried shot, although hitting the zombie, merely pierced its neck.
In principle, for an ordinary person, being hit in such a vital spot would inevitably lead to bleeding out and death.
But zombies are not ordinary people. Even when injured, they may bleed.
But as long as their brains remain unharmed, they can still continue to attack.
Facing Wang, Wei, and Wu who were within reach, the "Runner" showed great excitement.
The bloodthirsty desire drove it to throw open its arms, targeting Wang Qiang on the ground.
However... it clearly chose the wrong target today, because as it approached, one of the survivors’ eyes instantly ignited with flames.
"Xiao Wu! Leave Wang Qiang to you!"
With cold words, Wei Dazhuang suddenly drew from his back a scythe from no one knew how much blood had stained it, which appeared in his palm.
Wei Dazhuang’s action caused the beast to howl, thinking that this overly confident prey was throwing itself into the net.
At once, it abandoned its previous target Wang Qiang and turned towards Wei Dazhuang, who was closing in on it.
"Roar!"
"Ah!"
The moment man and zombie collided, a flash of cold light streaked by, followed by a spray of blood sword, sprinkled in the sky like blooming flowers.
After dispatching the beast in front of him, Wei Dazhuang didn’t even spare it a look, lifelessly kicking it aside, standing alone at the doorway of the passage.
"Xiao Hu! You take them outside to start the car! I’ll hold them off here!!"
With that said, Wei Dazhuang drew his left hand, revealing another scythe blade in his grasp.
Then he clashed the twin blades, producing a crisp ringing sound.
Wei Dazhuang took an imposing stance, gallantly challenging the zombies staggering inside the house, shouting: "Come on! All of you, come!"
Undoubtedly, facing such a dense zombie crowd, even with Wei Dazhuang’s bravery and eloquence, it was evidently impractical to think of single-handedly holding them back.
Upon hearing this, Hu Xiaodong quickly instructed Wu Chao and Wang Qiang: "Chao, Qiang, you two hurry and get the car started, I’ll stay here with Dazhuang!"
"That’s not right! Chao, you go start the car, I’ll stay with Hu and Dazhuang!" Wang Qiang immediately vetoed Hu Xiaodong’s suggestion, seeing it as cowardly and irresponsible to leave at this moment.
His character simply couldn’t accept such orders.
However, at this crisis moment, Hu Xiaodong had no time to argue with Wang Qiang. He glared in anger and retorted bluntly: "When is now? Stop messing around! I told you to go, just go! Who’s going to handle his safety!"
After giving instructions, Hu Xiaodong didn’t care about Wang Qiang’s reaction, and hurriedly ran over to Wei Dazhuang’s position.
Because he knew, when that guy goes berserk, it’s no less troublesome than Wang Qiang.
That’s right, whenever Wei Dazhuang sees zombies, his blood boils, a condition stemming from his past, understood by those who knew that his wife and children were killed by these mindless beasts.
With the dual blades flying wildly, amidst Hu Xiaodong’s previous words, two zombies had already fallen under Wei Dazhuang’s knives.
In response, while Hu Xiaodong quietly lamented, he also prepared immediately by nocking his bow, ready to shoot, supporting Wei Dazhuang with covering fire.
Meanwhile, Wang Qiang and Wu Chao rushed outside the store as fast as they could, Wang Qiang standing guard while Wu Chao jumped into the Jeep and swiftly turned the key.
Perhaps too nervous, the car, usually easy to start, took four or five tries before it could get going.
With the familiar humming sound, Hu Xiaodong ran over and, after taking down an approaching zombie, decisively patted Wei Dazhuang on the shoulder and stated without question, "We’re retreating!"
