Rotting Land: Survive-Chapter 443 - 441: Steady Progress (Part 6)
In the front and back, Hu Wei and the other quickly retreated, sniping at the enemies as they withdrew.
Once they reached the door, Wang Qiang was already there, ushering them to withdraw, then forcefully pushing the half-opened glass door shut.
Finally, he didn’t forget to latch the recurve bow over the door handle, hoping to delay the beasts’ charge as much as possible.
"Go! Get in the car!" Hu Xiaodong waved, leading the way to the jeep.
Just as they reached the vehicle, they heard a muffled sound behind them, and the recurve bow’s string ’tensed and stretched,’ pulling tighter and tighter until it reached full draw, finally stopping.
You have to admit, Wang Qiang’s clever trick of using the bow as a lock did have some effect, as at least the few zombies at the front couldn’t easily push the door open.
But before Hu Xiaodong could relax, another violent bang sounded.
Seeing their prey outside and out of reach, the mindless zombies naturally began headbutting the door in a brute force tactic.
And given the glass door was already in a terrible state due to the chaos at the start of the apocalypse, it only took a couple of hits from the beasts before the web of cracks spread wide, eventually shattering to the ground with a "crack."
In an instant, the freed zombies roared and surged out; judging by the look of it, there were at least 20 of them.
With things escalating to this point, staying here would only mean having your brains kicked out by a donkey.
Hu Xiaodong’s eyes narrowed, immediately releasing the handbrake, then after a quick turn, stepped on the gas and sped away.
"Fuck you all! Eat shit!" Wang Qiang vented, flipping the zombies off as they receded in the rearview mirror.
No wonder he got so worked up; after all, if not for Wei Dazhuang and Wu Chao’s timely reactions, he’d have lost his little life right there.
On the way back, everyone was in good spirits, the joy of returning with a full haul led to lots of teasing about Wang Qiang’s "lustful heart."
To which, the thick-skinned Wang Qiang didn’t mind at all; in his view, a horny man is a real man.
Returning to base, the sky was already nearing noon, and as Hu Xiaodong parked the car, Xu Renjie coincidentally led a team back from the military store.
The two groups met, and upon confirming no personnel losses and materials acquired, they all revealed relieved smiles.
Wei Yang had already prepared the meal, and seeing the team come back, she quickly set the table.
In no time, the once spacious living room was immediately crowded, and Wei Yang felt a tinge of homeliness from the bottom of her heart.
Indeed, in the apocalypse, the concept of home was no longer as narrow as in the past, and those one calls family weren’t just parents and relatives.
As most had lost their loved ones in the cataclysm, home being destroyed and people perishing had become the norm.
Wei Yang too had lost her father during the disaster, an incredibly sad and depressing event, one she couldn’t come to terms with for a long time.
But from another perspective, she was extremely fortunate because she found a group of trustworthy companions.
Understand that after the apocalypse, human nature was no longer good; beyond survival resources, trust between people had become a rare commodity.
So, looking at the heartwarming scene of elders and kids sitting around the dining table, Wei Yang’s heart was filled with warmth.
Sour fish with pickles, luncheon meat with scrambled eggs, shredded potatoes in vinegar, Mapo tofu, dry-fried beef, ants climbing a tree.
The dishes were served one after another, making Ah Cheng stare wide-eyed with saliva uncontrollably dripping down.
Not just Ah Cheng, but even the much older Lin and others were swallowing involuntarily.
Wang Qiang jestingly scoffed, "Hey, Old Zhao! Since Wei Yang is back, how about you step down as head chef?"
As soon as he said this, it brought about a peal of laughter from everyone. Old Zhao wasn’t the least bit upset, shrugging his shoulders with a smile before saying to Wei Yang, who was setting down chopsticks, "Oh Little Wei! You heard the comrades’ request, so from now on, I’ll leave the cooking duties to you."
At the dinner table, Hu Xiaodong and the others, who hadn’t had a decent meal in a while, were eating voraciously, and even Lin Junfu, who had been in low spirits for days, had his appetite sparked.
The table full of dishes was quickly polished off, and after a brief rest, the survivors plunged into the new tasks at hand.
All necessary equipment was brought into the building, and it took a full 10 minutes just to unpack everything.
This alone indicated just how much the survivors had managed to scavenge on this trip.
Every task required electricity, so once everything was unpacked and assembled, they immediately cleared the space, handing it over to Bi Dahu and Zhao Yunhai.
Bi Dahu had already neatly arranged the car power sources collected in the morning, lined up in two columns.
Then, under his direction, Old Zhao and Tang Xiaoquan began stringing a daisy chain parallel circuit.
This was an extremely meticulous task, any slight mistake could lead to a short circuit and burn out the entire circuit.
"Wow, Tiger Brother, which university did you graduate from? You’re amazing!" Wang Qiang was completely astonished, naturally imagining Bi Dahu as a top student from a prestigious university given his own second-rate university background.
But the reply from the other quickly shattered his imagination.
"Me? Elementary school graduate! Hehe, why?"
"What? You’re an elementary school graduate?? You’re joking, right! An elementary school graduate who knows this?" Wang Qiang, who barely understood as a university graduate, refused to believe that Bi Dahu with just elementary schooling could get it.
To this, Bi Dahu simply chuckled, "Practice makes perfect. You university students learn theory! We learn the real deal through practice."
After saying that, Bi Dahu ignored Wang Qiang, as he didn’t want his distraction to lead to a failed plan.
Once Old Zhao and Wang Qiang finished stringing the daisy chain parallel circuit, Bi Dahu promptly hooked up the generator and rectifier.
If all went smoothly, the generator-driven electricity would soon travel through wires to the connected car power sources for charging. Once fully charged, the rectifier would convert the DC power into usable AC, completing the cycle.
To ensure the test’s foolproof success, Bi Dahu meticulously checked each car power source’s interface with a multimeter, ensuring good contact with no misconnections.
After confirming, he gestured to Wang Qiang, who immediately filled the diesel generator with fuel.
Next came the moment of truth. If successful, not only could the survivors power tools and modify the bulldozer,
but more crucially, after enduring two months of life without electricity, they finally had a chance to re-embrace the lighted world once again. (To be continued.
