Chapter 180: The Story Of Fire And Ice {1}

It was surreal, this feeling, the calmness, the swift flow of the milky water, the echoes you can only hear beneath it, the firm grasp of pleasant ecstasy and the peace it brings.

It is exactly how I feel. I leisurely opened my eyes, I felt peaceful.

"Have you come to it?"

Like the voice awoke me from my trance, I gasped finally taking note of my surroundings, I was before a blazing storm, within it to be exact, the wind carried snow and I could barely see what was ahead. My gaze fell on my hands and then I gasped seeing them transparent, almost like I was fading? Was I dead?

"What?" I was confused as I checked myself.

"You’re here as your spirit form", at the same voice I turned to Diablo beside me, he was transparent too. "We have both traveled far into the past," He explains.

"This is the past?", I gape at the surroundings, if I was actually here I’m certain I would have felt the gravity of this weather, it must be freakishly cold, no one can survive in this.

"Your past" Diablo conveyed. "As I told you before the Waterfall Of Truth shall regain what you lost"

"My memories"

"Even better... all hidden truth"

"Where are we then? I can’t see anything"

"Well... I do not know, this is your past not mine"

Guess I have to figure it out myself because this was purely blank, I wondered why we were brought here, there was nothing to see nor any truth, maybe the Waterfall Of Truth made some kind of mistake. My past can’t be blank, or was this a scene? Was something about to happen right now? I thought maybe I should be in the Spirit Forest, that should be the view because that was where I and Nicklaus first met... I was hoping for that.

’This Waterfall Of Truth is very powerful, not just memories but all truth will be revealed, even the ones you didn’t ask for, but you should know whatever you see is connected to you, so do not worry’

I remembered Diablo’s words clearly in my head, THIS right now must be connected to me. I was snapped out of my thoughts when a small silver Fox with honey eyes mixed with green walked past us. My eyes narrowed... that Fox seemed familiar. Subconsciously I followed, feeling the need to do so, I don’t know why, but I felt I had to. Diablo followed beside me, crawling.

Coming to a halt, the Fox has already stopped where a young boy lay on the cold snow, half-dead, his skin cold and white as ice. A boy? What was a boy doing in such a place? I observed as the Fox brushed its nose on his, an action I was surprisingly familiar with and it made a hot chill run down my spine and my belly felt like butterflies.

"What is this?!" I murmured, my eyes shocked as I watch the fox lay on top of the young boy and curling like a ball, a fiery aura covered him, she was helping him, she was saving him from his fate, and her aura gave him warmth and he seems to come back from the dreadful state he was in.

"It appears an intervention of a non-dimensional creature, turned the tide of this young one’s fate and linked them at that very moment," Diablo said.

I couldn’t help it, a tear slid down my cheeks, and my eyes continued to tremble.

"It appears this is your past young one... that Fox appears to be you, I wonder who the young lad is"

"Nicklaus," I said as more tears filled my eyes. "I-Its Nicklaus" I covered my mouth, my chest unable to contain the warmth I felt and the hole that had been filled. "This is how we meet", it wasn’t at the Spirit Forest, that wasn’t our first encounter, this was how it came to be.

It all sank in, I was the She-Fox from Nicklaus’ tale, I was the Fox librarian who spent years with him without realizing it.

Suddenly the scene vanished like dust and then we were brought to another, it looked like the inside of the library. Nicklaus was busy with a book, and the Fox hid watching him with a smile on her lips and wagging her tail.

"I know it you," Nicklaus said sternly.

The Fox slowly came out of hiding, her tail swamping back and forth behind her. Nicklaus raised an eyebrow. She came forth at him but at close range she covered her nose with her paws, shaking her head.

Nicklaus gave her a prolonged stare not attempting to do so. The Fox sighed before rolling her eyes. She pointed her paw at him before waving it close to her nose, a sign meaning he really stinks, and then she nudged her head.

"I see... you want to take me to a bath?"

She nods her head, grinning showing her fox teeth.

"Alright then... show me"

The scene vanished in dust and then we were outside where a stream was in, the water spilling from the rocks, the grasses, and then up ahead, the snow season, the stream was a beautiful sight. And the moon was at its highest, full, and shone on the stream making it seem magical.

I watched as she helped him cut his hair, while he was in the bath.

"You’re the first smart creature I have seen... I wonder what it would be like if they had more"

The scene changed.

"Yelena, why won’t you tell him?"

I instantly turned, it was a room, a little girl with overly long silver hair, spreading widely on the floor, squatting in front of a fireplace and poking the burning flames with a stick.

"Why won’t you show him your human form", I finally found who the deep loud voice belonged, it was from the wall, just above the fireplace.

A face made of roots in green, with features of a man, a white flower bloomed on the corners. And then I knew... that was Basker, the Library itself.

"Yelena," he said to the young name.

"Yelena," I said, that was my name from before too.

"I feel comfortable being in my Fox form with him," she said, her voice angelic and tiny.

"You always watch even though I do not tell you to," Basker said.

She stretched her tiny hands to the flames, getting warmth.

"Are you fond of that Vampire?" 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"I like watching him"

Basker sighed. "Sweet Yelena, you know your worlds differ, you’re the Spirit of the Library that makes this place strive in knowledge, you’re the light of Knowledge itself, do not let someone like him divert you from your duties"

"I know," she said pouting, wrapping her finger around her hair, they were straight like threads and beautiful. "But he’s the first human to ever come here, I may be a spirit but I can feel he’s something more"

"You saved him from the cold, you brought him here... You chose him, you have never done that before"

"I cannot help it..." a sweet smile graced her lips. "I like him, and I wish he stays here forever" she giggled.

Basker sighs. "What has gotten to your head?"

"Affection," she giggled.

"Seems like you fell in love with young Nicklaus without realizing it," Diablo said. "You become fond of him as you watch him"

The image vanished in dust and we were once again brought to another scene. I watch the She-Fox running with her little feet, her long hair whistling behind. She made a halt and climbed into the hall to take a peak, and then she sighed, placing a hand on her jaw and watching Nicklaus practice magic from the other room.

"She was a spirit, a Librarian of the Holy Library, all alone for gods know how long," I said with sad eyes. "And then she met him... I met Nicklaus" I corrected, a smile on my lips "And I became curious and drawn to him, I became attached..."

The image vanished in dust, and another scene showed, this time we were outside, and Nicklaus stood watching the Sakura trees, hands behind his back.

And then I saw the She-Fox but in her Fox form, as she jumped next to him, on seeing her, Nicklaus squats, brushing his hand on her fur and she purred in delight.

"Why are you always following me?!" he asked the question. "You shouldn’t get attached to me young one" he retreated his hands and then walked away leaving the sad She-Fox.

"...But we’re worlds apart just like Basker said. I’m the Fox Librarian and my spirit was anchored to it, he was the scholar who sorted knowledge and had a purpose to fulfill..." I narrated as I watched Nicklaus disappear from view, as he walked further and further away and my past self watching as he did was heartbreaking. That was the day he left the Holy Library.

"We could never be together"
