Chapter 121: Chapter 121: I’m Afraid of You Now

Enduring the pain in his face, his mouth full of blood, Gabriel Galloway explained his relationship with Serena Yardley to Ethan Yardley down to the last detail.

He also told him how the baby had been lost.

"That’s the whole story. I liked her, but she always rejected me. Once I found out you two were married, I never intended to bother her again.

I only followed her because she went out alone and I was worried.

I’m truly sorry about the baby, but Serena is innocent. I was afraid you’d misunderstand her, which is why I risked my life to come back and explain everything.

Ethan, every word I’ve said is true. If there’s even a hint of a lie, you can tear me limb from limb. I won’t have a single complaint."

Ethan Yardley was speechless.

Standing there, ramrod straight, he could hardly believe that everything Gabriel Galloway said was the truth.

’If that was true, then how astronomically wrong I’ve been.’

A thought struck him. He looked at Gabriel Galloway and said,

"I went to the hospital and spoke with the doctor. He said she took medication to abort the baby."

Gabriel Galloway shook his head and let out a desolate laugh.

"Ethan, Ethan... You’re her husband. Do you really not know her at all?

Do you really think she would abort your child behind your back?

During the miscarriage, Serena was clinging to me, crying and begging me to save the baby. How could she possibly have taken pills to get rid of it?

I went to Quentin Montgomery about this later. He told me he wasn’t the one who drugged her. Someone knocked Serena out and delivered her to him.

Someone had already given her the pills.

Quentin Montgomery only told me it was a woman. He didn’t say her name."

Ethan Yardley was silent.

’A woman...’

’What woman would hold such a grudge against her? What woman could be so ruthless?’

For some reason, an image of Sylvia Schuyler flashed through Ethan Yardley’s mind.

In a flash, he remembered that when Serena had her accident, everyone had been with him—except Sylvia Schuyler.

And then, after the accident, Serena had woken up remembering everyone but him and Sylvia Schuyler.

’So, could it be possible? That Sylvia Schuyler was behind both the miscarriage and the accident?’

In that moment, Ethan Yardley realized what a complete bastard he had been.

If he hadn’t brought Sylvia Schuyler home, perhaps none of this tragedy would have occurred.

Now that he had a lead and a suspect, he was determined to get to the bottom of it.

If Sylvia Schuyler had done this, he would make sure she died without a grave.

"Ethan, what happened to Serena? Why doesn’t she remember anything when I brought up the day she was kidnapped?"

Gabriel Galloway staggered, his battered body making it hard to stay upright.

He endured the pain from Ethan’s assault and asked with concern.

Ethan Yardley didn’t answer. He just tossed out, "I’m sparing your life. Don’t ever let me see you again."

Then he turned and walked away.

The thought of how he had misunderstood Serena, bullied her, and verbally humiliated her made Ethan Yardley want to slap himself across the face.

’How could I have been so stupid?’

’How could I have hurt Serena so badly?’

’And I treated her that way during the miscarriage... She must have been heartbroken and desperate.’

Ethan Yardley quickened his pace, desperate to get home and hold her in his arms.

Serena Yardley was curled up against the headboard, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees, her head buried between them. Her eyes were empty, devoid of light.

’Was it because I ran off with Gabriel Galloway and lost the baby? Is that why Ethan forced me to jump into the river to prove my innocence?’

’No, that’s impossible.’

’If Ethan had forced me to jump, he wouldn’t be treating me so well now that I’m awake.’

Hah!

Serena scoffed at the thought of Ethan.

’How has he been good to me? He was just so harsh, accusing me of still having feelings for Gabriel Galloway.’

’I barely even know Gabriel Galloway. Why does he insist on accusing me of cheating?’

Serena Yardley felt deeply wronged.

She didn’t want to think about it anymore. She closed her eyes, trying to force herself to sleep.

Suddenly, the bedroom door swung open.

In the dim light of the wall sconce, Serena Yardley saw a dark figure loom over her. An instant later, she was completely enveloped in his arms.

She smelled the man’s unique, clean scent.

Ordinarily, that scent made her feel safe, but right now, she felt anything but.

She was terrified that his mood would shift and he’d shove her away again.

So, before he could push her away, Serena Yardley pushed him away first.

"Serena..."

Ethan Yardley’s voice was hoarse as he reached to embrace her again.

Serena raised a hand to stop him, her voice choked with tears.

"Don’t touch me. I’m scared of you right now. Just go away!"

She slowly burrowed under the covers, pulling the blanket over her head so she wouldn’t have to look at him.

Ethan Yardley sat motionless, watching her small frame tremble beneath the blanket. His heart clenched painfully.

’Look at what I’ve done. She was finally starting to accept me, and now I’ve made her terrified of me all over again.’

’I really am a bastard.’

He didn’t bring up the past. He just made a silent vow to himself to make it up to her from now on.

’They could have another child. And in this life, no one will ever tear them apart again. Nothing can ever shake her place in my heart.’

He sat by the bed, watching over her as she slept, refusing to go anywhere.

Serena Yardley cried herself out, not even realizing when she finally fell asleep.

When she woke up again, Ethan Yardley was still sitting by the bed.

She ignored him, getting up to go wash her face.

Ethan Yardley followed her, running the water, putting toothpaste on her brush, and holding out a towel for her.

Serena Yardley stood aside, watching him coldly. She demanded, "Is this your favorite game? Slapping someone and then offering them a piece of candy?"

Ethan Yardley knew he was in the wrong, so he didn’t argue.

Serena Yardley smacked his hand away and said distantly,

"Don’t come near me. And don’t be nice to me. Otherwise, it will only hurt more the next time you lose your temper with me."

She quickly washed her face and left.

Ethan Yardley was left speechless. He didn’t follow her this time.

’Giving her some space might be more effective than pressuring her.’

’As long as she doesn’t leave or ask for a divorce, I’ll have plenty of chances to make it up to her, to treat her right.’

Serena Yardley changed her clothes, went downstairs, and, skipping breakfast, headed straight next door.

Nina Thorne was in the kitchen, making food for her child.

The nanny was there too, but Nina was doing the cooking herself.

As Serena Yardley entered, she could hear Nina and the nanny talking in the kitchen.

She walked toward the kitchen and called out from the doorway, "Nina..."

Nina Thorne turned. Seeing Serena Yardley’s pale face and red, swollen eyes, she walked over and asked with concern,

"What’s wrong? Didn’t you sleep well? Or did you and Ethan have another fight?"

Serena Yardley fought back her tears and shook her head. "No... Nina, can I have breakfast here? And maybe stay with you for the whole day?"

It was the weekend, so she didn’t have to go to the university.

It felt like this was the only place she had left to go.

"What a silly thing to say. Of course you can! I’d be happy if you moved in. What do you want to eat? I’ll make it for you."

Serena Yardley forced a smile. "I can cook too. I’ll let you try some of my cooking, Nina."

She rolled up her sleeves and immediately got to work.

Nina Thorne sent the nanny away, leaving the two of them to cook by themselves.
