Chapter 137: Chapter 137: Serena Has Depression

Serena’s gaze fell on Nina Thorne.

Looking at Nina, her eyes suddenly reddened, her voice choked with emotion. "I’m scared."

Nina quickly pulled her into a hug, asking in confusion, "What are you scared of?"

"I don’t know. I’m just so scared. I feel like my body is floating, like I could just drift away at any moment. I also feel like the baby is flying away, and I can’t hold on to him."

As she said this, she gently closed her eyes, and hot tears streamed down her cheeks.

Nina held her tighter and comforted her:

"Serena, don’t be afraid. We’re here. Ethan is here. We’ll all protect you and the baby. Nothing will happen to you or the baby."

"But whenever I fall asleep, I have nightmares. I dream that he doesn’t want me, and the baby doesn’t want me either."

She couldn’t hold back her emotions, and tears streamed uncontrollably from her eyes.

Watching her, the little boy beside her looked like he was about to cry too.

He raised his small hand to wipe Serena Yardley’s tears, comforting her in his childish voice:

"Miss Serena, don’t cry. Mommy said Miss Serena is going to give me a little brother. I really want a little brother. When he’s born, I’ll definitely help Miss Serena take good care of him."

Hearing the child’s words, Serena Yardley tried hard to control her emotions.

She sat up straight and stroked Leo Thorne’s face. "Then can Leo stay with me?"

"Okay! I’ll stay with Miss Serena."

Serena finally relaxed a little and continued talking to the child.

Nina Thorne stood up and said, "Serena, can you watch Leo for me? I’m going to the restroom."

"Okay."

Paying Nina no mind, Serena pulled the child into her lap, wanting to feel for herself what it was like to be a mother.

Nina Thorne left the room and saw Ethan Yardley standing by the door. "Let’s go. We can talk over there."

Ethan followed her a few steps and asked, "Is there something wrong with her psychologically?"

Serena had been acting strangely ever since she found out she was pregnant.

She was either overly emotional or frighteningly quiet.

This was definitely not normal.

Nina Thorne didn’t deny it. Once she was sure Serena couldn’t hear them, she turned to face Ethan. "I suspect she might be depressed."

"Depressed?"

"Yes. Because she had a miscarriage before, she subconsciously feels useless, like she can’t take care of her own child. That’s why she was afraid of having this one."

"You need to pay close attention to this. Depression during pregnancy is very dangerous. If it gets bad, she might have thoughts of suicide or self-harm."

Ethan panicked the moment he heard that.

"Nina, she’s so young. Why does she always have to suffer like this?"

If her depression was caused by him getting her pregnant, then he was truly damned.

Sometimes, Ethan realized he was far too arrogant and selfish, never considering her feelings. He just did whatever he wanted with his chauvinistic attitude and made her bear the consequences.

What right did a man like him have to claim he loved her?

"Her suffering has everything to do with you, doesn’t it!"

Nina Thorne said bluntly.

Ethan was silent.

Nina added, "Don’t overthink it. The important thing now is to guide her through this. Don’t let her mind wander to dark places. It’s best to keep her spirits up."

"I understand."

He decided he wouldn’t even go to work today. He just wanted to stay and be with Serena.

Ethan turned and went back to the room.

Even with Leo Thorne keeping her company, Serena still felt heavy-hearted and depressed.

She held the child in her arms without speaking, constantly lost in a daze.

Ethan walked over and crouched in front of her, speaking softly:

"Serena, how about we go camping? Don’t you usually love to be outdoors?"

He was worried ever since Nina said she had depressive tendencies.

He was afraid she would get lost in her thoughts and do something foolish.

He was now putting all his work aside to be with her and take care of her with all his heart.

Serena glanced at Ethan but didn’t say anything or show any reaction.

Nina came over and asked, "Serena, is there anything you particularly want to do?"

Serena looked at Nina, thought for a moment, and said, "I want to go back to school for my classes."

Nina glanced at Ethan, then asked Serena, "Will going back to school make you feel more fulfilled?"

"Yes."

Nina understood. She gestured to Ethan, "Then take her back to school."

Ethan was worried.

He was afraid it wouldn’t be safe for Serena to be out of his sight.

But if going back to school was the only thing that could lift her spirits, he had no choice but to agree.

"Serena, let’s get you up. Pack your things, and I’ll take you to school."

Ethan helped her up.

Serena remained silent, letting Ethan do as he wished, like a docile child.

Even on the drive to the university, Serena sat silently in the passenger seat, staring out the window the entire time.

Ethan, however, kept glancing over at her.

Serena’s silence made him uneasy. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

He spoke up. "Serena, please don’t be so quiet. If something’s on your mind, just say it. I’d rather you argue with me than say nothing at all."

Seeing her like this somehow made his heart ache even more.

Serena felt like her mind was a complete blank.

’I can’t think about anything. My head just hurts when I try.’

’There’s nothing to think about, so there’s nothing to say.’

"Serena..."

Seeing that she was still ignoring him, Ethan reached out and ruffled her hair. "If you’re at school and you feel unwell at all, call me right away."

"Okay."

She finally nodded in agreement.

"And don’t eat just anything. I’ll drive over to pick you up in the evening."

Serena immediately blurted out four words: "I’ll live on campus."

Ethan looked at her. "It’s not a good idea for you to stay on campus right now. I’m worried..."

Before he could finish, she lowered her head again, looking pitiful.

It was as if she’d become unhappy all over again.

Ethan was truly at a loss with her.

"If you stay on campus, can you promise you’ll take good care of yourself and the baby?"

"Yes."

Serena nodded.

Ethan had no choice but to give in.

After dropping her off at the university, he took out his phone and called Yannick Young, telling him to arrange for a couple of people to look after her at school.

After that, he drove back home, planning to change his clothes before heading to the office.

Just as Ethan walked through the door, he saw a young woman sitting in the living room.

Vivian Lynch hadn’t expected Mr. Yardley to return at this time. When she saw him, she immediately stood up and bowed her head. "Mr... Mr. Yardley, hello."

Ethan ignored her. ’She’s probably here to see her mother,’ he thought.

He walked straight toward the stairs.

But he suddenly stopped halfway up the staircase.

His gaze fell back on the young woman standing in the living room.

When Vivian Lynch saw Mr. Yardley looking at her, she became terrified and nervous all over again, quickly lowering her head, not daring to breathe too loudly.

’I just left my jacket here and came back to get it. Since the owner wasn’t home, I sat on the sofa to enjoy the life of the rich for a moment. I never expected him to come back so suddenly.’

So now that the master of the house was looking at her, her heart leaped into her throat.

"What’s your name?"

Ethan asked.

Vivian Lynch froze for a second, then quickly raised her head to meet the man’s gaze, replying as if overwhelmed by the attention, "I... I’m Vivian. Vivian Lynch."

"Why are you here?"

Ethan asked again, his handsome face devoid of expression.

Vivian instinctively lowered her head again and explained timidly, "I... I came to bring my mother her medicine."

"So, how are you finding your work at Yardley Manor?"

"It’s great. The work at Yardley Manor is wonderful. Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. Yardley."

Ethan paid no mind to her timid demeanor and continued:

"How about this? I’ll arrange a new job for you. Double the salary."
