Chapter 138: Chapter 138: Serena, Don’t Be Afraid

When Vivian Lynch heard about a different job with double the pay, she quickly nodded and replied:

"Yes, I’ll do whatever Mr. Yardley arranges."

"Go to Arden University and be Serena’s study companion. Look after her daily needs, and if any problems arise, report them to me immediately. Can you do that?"

’Go to Arden University as a study companion?’

For someone like her, who hadn’t gotten into college, this was an incredible opportunity.

Vivian Lynch was moved to tears with gratitude. She quickly nodded and said:

"I can do it. Rest assured, Mr. Yardley, I’ll take excellent care of Miss Serena. The moment anything happens, I’ll report it to you immediately."

"Good. Also, she’s pregnant, so pay close attention to her diet. If you’re not sure about something, you can ask your mother."

"Okay."

Ethan added, "Then head straight to Arden University. I’ll have someone arrange for your enrollment and accommodations."

He thought, ’This is Mrs. Miller’s daughter. Mrs. Miller is cautious and meticulous, and she understands Serena’s preferences, so this Vivian Lynch probably won’t be too bad.’

’Serena is kind-hearted and treats Mrs. Miller like family. She probably won’t reject Vivian getting close to her.’

’Having someone her own age by her side, to be her friend and confidante, might keep her from dwelling on things.’

...

Vivian Lynch was ecstatic.

She hurriedly packed her things and rushed to Arden University.

After finding Serena Yardley’s single dorm room, she stood at the entrance and knocked.

But for a long time, no one answered.

It was noon. Serena Yardley had just returned from the library and was heading to her dorm to grab a textbook for her afternoon class when she saw Vivian Lynch standing at her door.

"What are you doing here?"

Vivian Lynch turned her head. Upon seeing Serena Yardley, she quickly smiled and went up to her. When she saw that no one else was around, she said:

"Mr. Yardley sent me to take care of you, to be your study companion."

Serena Yardley was speechless.

’Study companion?’

’Does that man distrust me so much? He just had to send someone to monitor me.’

Ignoring Vivian Lynch, Serena Yardley swiped her keycard and entered the dorm room.

Vivian Lynch followed her inside.

The room contained a sofa, a computer, a wardrobe, and even a large bed with a spring mattress. It was completely different from the other dorms she had glimpsed on her way over.

It was as spacious as a small apartment.

Serena Yardley sat down at her computer desk and told Vivian Lynch, "There’s no bed for you here. You should go. I don’t need a study companion."

As she spoke, she took out her phone, preparing to call Ethan Yardley.

When Vivian Lynch heard that Serena was trying to get rid of her, she quickly put on a pitiful act and pleaded:

"Miss Serena, please don’t. My mother’s health is poor, and she has expensive hospital visits every year."

"I also have a paralyzed father at home and a younger brother in middle school. If you make me leave now, the entire burden of supporting our family will fall on my mother alone."

"I’m begging you, please don’t let me lose this job. I promise, as your study companion, I absolutely will not disturb or interfere with you."

Seeing Serena Yardley hesitate, she dropped to her knees right in front of her.

"Please, Miss Serena. Mr. Yardley said if I do this job well, he’ll double my salary. This way, I can help ease my mother’s burden."

"It’s okay if there’s no bed for me. I can just sleep on the floor."

Serena Yardley had never met such a shameless person.

She put her phone away and said nonchalantly, "Get up."

"Does that mean you’re not going to make me leave, Miss Serena?"

Serena Yardley instructed her, "Go to the campus market and buy some fruit."

The unspoken implication was that she was allowing her to stay.

Vivian Lynch scrambled to her feet and replied, "Okay, Miss Serena. I’ll be right back!"

After Vivian Lynch left, Serena Yardley walked over to the large bed, lay down, and began staring blankly at the ceiling again.

After a long while, she took out her phone and called Julian Thorne.

He picked up. In a dejected voice, she asked, "Julian, where are you?"

"I’m abroad. What’s wrong, Serena?"

"Why did you go abroad?"

"I... I’m working over here."

’There were many things about himself that he didn’t want others to know. Now that his family knew, he truly felt too ashamed to stick around.’

’He just needed some time alone abroad to clear his head.’

"Oh. Well, I’ll let you get back to work then."

Serena Yardley didn’t think much of it and prepared to hang up.

Julian Thorne quickly said, "My sister told me you’re pregnant?"

"...Mhm."

"Congratulations, Serena. You’re going to be a mom."

His voice was laced with disappointment.

Serena Yardley couldn’t feel happy at all. She said listlessly, "You’re not here. I can’t even find anyone to go for a walk with."

Julian Thorne asked her, "What about Ethan Yardley? Have him go with you."

"I don’t want to talk to him. I’m not happy when I’m with him."

"What happened? Did you two fight again?"

"No. Julian, I’m so stressed. I’m scared."

She sat up again, slid off the bed, and sat on the rug beside it.

Clutching her phone, she hung her head, feeling the urge to cry again.

"What are you afraid of, Serena?"

Hearing the change in her voice, Julian Thorne grew worried again.

"I’m afraid I won’t be a good mother. I’m afraid they’ll take the baby away from me after it’s born. I’m afraid of Ethan Yardley. I keep having nightmares. I feel so exhausted, and I can’t feel happy."

She didn’t know why she was like this.

She used to be such an optimistic, cheerful person.

But ever since she found out she was pregnant, she’d been so miserable.

Julian Thorne quickly tried to comfort her:

"Serena, don’t be scared. You’re not like other college students. You’re married. You can take a leave of absence and go home to have the baby."

"Besides, you don’t have to worry about earning money to support the child. Ethan Yardley has more than enough money. So please, try not to be so stressed, okay?"

"But I just can’t be happy."

Her voice broke into a sob, and tears welled in her eyes.

Julian Thorne asked her, "Then what would make you happy, Serena? How about I drop my work and come home to be with you?"

"No, don’t. You should focus on your work while you’re abroad, Julian."

"Then promise me you’ll try to be happy. It’s better for the baby."

"Okay."

"If you can’t sleep at night, you can call me, Serena. We can stay on the line while you sleep, and maybe you won’t have any more nightmares."

Julian Thorne’s voice was soft, gentle, and pleasant to the ear.

It made Serena Yardley feel a special sense of warmth and familiarity.

After they chatted for a few more moments, she felt her spirits lift considerably.

"Okay, Julian, you should get back to work. I’ll call you tonight."

"Okay. You can call me anytime, Serena. I’m always here for you."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Serena Yardley got up and went to splash some water on her face.

Just as she came out, she saw her phone ringing on the bed. She picked it up and saw it was Ethan Yardley’s number, hesitating for a moment before answering.

Over the phone, the man’s magnetic, gentle voice came through. "Serena, I had Mrs. Miller’s daughter go over to take care of you. Is everything all right?"

Serena Yardley remained silent.

’She didn’t want to talk to him at all.’

’She thought he was a liar. From now on, she wouldn’t believe a word he said.’

’He wanted a child, so she would just give him one. Fine.’

"Serena?" Hearing no response, Ethan Yardley called out again.

Serena Yardley still didn’t answer.

Just then, Vivian Lynch’s voice came from the doorway. "Miss Serena, I’m back with the fruit! Hold on, I’ll go wash it for you."

Serena Yardley hung up the phone, found the textbook for her next class, and left with it in her arms.

Vivian Lynch came out carrying the fruit, but when she saw Serena leaving, she quickly put it down and chased after her.

Before she could catch up to Serena Yardley, a call came in from Ethan Yardley.

He asked, "Is Serena all right?"

Vivian Lynch replied as she walked, "Don’t worry, Mr. Yardley, she’s fine. She just left the dormitory building with a book. I assume she’s heading to class."

"Good. Stay with her, and call me if anything happens."

"Okay."

After hanging up, Vivian Lynch followed behind Serena Yardley, ’truly unable to fathom why a man like Mr. Yardley was so fond of Serena Yardley.’

’And this Serena didn’t even seem to appreciate it.’

’Go on and make a scene,’ she thought. ’It’d be for the best if she stressed herself into a miscarriage. That would be perfect.’
