Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Reason He Keeps Sylvia Schuyler

Divorce...

Hearing that single word from Ethan, Serena Yardley felt as if a thousand arrows had pierced her heart. The pain in her chest was so intense she could barely breathe.

She was in agony.

Her throat ached, too swollen to utter a single word.

Her body went limp. She slowly sank down, curling into a ball on the floor, utterly lost and desperate.

’Ethan wants to divorce me now. What am I going to do? What about our baby?’

Curled on the floor, Serena Yardley sobbed, unable to summon the courage to respond.

Ethan Yardley’s cool, magnetic voice came through the phone again.

"Serena, I’ll provide you with more than enough financial security. I won’t abandon you."

Serena Yardley struggled to control her emotions, even as tears streamed down her face like a broken string of pearls.

But she choked back her sobs, her voice desolate as she said:

"Ethan... thank you for saving me. Thank you for taking care of me all these years. And thank you for fulfilling my dream of marrying you."

"Ethan, I won’t stand in the way of you marrying someone else. You’re so powerful, I’m sure you can finalize the divorce even without me there, can’t you?"

"No one knows we’re married anyway. Just use your influence to have our marriage record erased. As for the financial support you mentioned... I don’t need it."

"Ethan, I wish you happiness."

After uttering the last word, she hung up the phone. Curling up on the floor, she finally let out the wrenching sobs she had been holding back.

’I’m so useless. I couldn’t keep him.’

’I can’t even give our child a proper family.’

’Serena Yardley, you were destined to be abandoned by the world after all.’

’You have no father, no mother. The only family you had has left you. Now, you’re all alone.’

’No, you still have the baby inside you.’

’You have to live. You have to be strong. Don’t do anything foolish.’

But it hurt so much. Her whole body ached.

Serena Yardley lay prone on the floor, her body wracked with convulsions as she cried.

「The Sovereign Villa」

In the living room, Ethan Yardley stared blankly at his phone for a long while.

Her words replayed in his mind, making him feel as if he were sitting on pins and needles. He finally stood up, heading for the door as he dialed his assistant. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"Send me Serena’s hotel address."

Once he had the address, Ethan Yardley drove to the hotel himself.

He got a key card from the front desk and went straight to her room.

When Ethan Yardley pushed the door open and saw the woman lying motionless on the floor, he panicked.

He rushed over, scooping up Serena Yardley’s frail body and calling out frantically, "Serena! Serena...!"

Serena Yardley stirred from a daze, her face pale, her eyes red and swollen.

The moment she saw Ethan Yardley, a fresh wave of grief washed over her heart.

She quickly pulled away from him and backed away, her voice distant and dazed.

"Did you bring the Divorce Agreement for me to sign? Fine, I’ll sign it. Ethan, I’ll sign. I won’t hold you back from marrying someone else."

As soon as the words left her mouth, hot tears streamed down her gaunt little face once more.

Watching her, Ethan Yardley’s heart ached with pity.

He stepped forward and pulled her into a tight embrace, murmuring in a low voice,

"I’m so sorry. I didn’t handle this well. Don’t cry, Serena."

"I’m not crying! I’ll sign, Ethan! I’ll divorce you right now. I promise I’ll stay out of your life, and I won’t bother you and Sylvia Schuyler," she cried, her body trembling in his arms.

Hearing her choked sobs, Ethan Yardley felt a bitter pang in his heart.

"You silly girl, I’m not telling you to disappear. I told you I wouldn’t abandon you."

"Ethan, I know you’ve done more than enough for me. I shouldn’t keep clinging to you. I’m letting you go."

Serena Yardley forced herself to push him away and began to frantically look around for the divorce papers.

"Give me the papers, Ethan. I’ll sign them right now."

"I didn’t bring them. Seeing you like this... how could I be so cruel?"

He pulled her back into his arms, lifted her onto the bed, and cupped her small, round face, peppering it with kisses.

He touched the tip of his nose to her delicate one, pressing his cheek against hers as he spoke gently,

"I know you can’t leave me, Serena. So if you can’t, then don’t. Okay?"

Serena Yardley shook her head, tears in her eyes. "No, it’s not okay! You already brought her home. Where does that leave me?"

Ethan Yardley gazed at her and said,

"Does her being here bother you that much? Do you want to know why I indulge her?"

Serena Yardley forced herself to calm down. Gazing at the man she loved so dearly, she swallowed the pain in her heart and nodded.

She really did want to know why Ethan was so indulgent toward Sylvia Schuyler.

Ethan Yardley pulled her onto his lap and gently wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumb, his voice soft.

"A long time ago, I hit her with my car. The accident... it led to her having a hysterectomy. She can’t have children. I’ve felt guilty about it ever since, and I promised I would take responsibility and marry her."

"..."

"After that, she went abroad. She was gone for years, and I thought she was never coming back."

"I never expected her to return just six months after we got married, demanding I fulfill my promise."

Stroking Serena Yardley’s cheek, Ethan Yardley’s voice grew heavy. "So tell me, what am I supposed to do?"

Serena Yardley was speechless.

’So that’s why.’

’No wonder Ethan wanted me to have a baby, and Sylvia Schuyler agreed to it.’

’It was because Sylvia Schuyler can’t have children.’

’So, am I just a tool for him to have children with?’

Serena Yardley’s mind went hazy as she mumbled, "Do you like her?"

This time, Ethan Yardley didn’t evade the question. "I’ve told you, marrying her has nothing to do with love. I don’t even like her."

"But you kissed her before."

Ethan Yardley was baffled. "When did I kiss her?"

Serena Yardley stared at him. "It was just yesterday! I saw it the moment I walked in."

"You saw wrong. I was just helping her stay steady."

Serena Yardley said no more.

She didn’t know what to say.

’From his perspective, he really is in a tough spot.’

Ethan Yardley hugged her tighter, his voice softening as he murmured in her ear,

"Be good, Serena. Don’t be difficult. Once Sylvia is better, I’ll have her leave."

Serena Yardley remained silent.

’But she decided to give him one more chance.’

’After all, he didn’t like Sylvia. He just felt indebted to her and was trying to make it up to her.’

’And she believed that someone as capable as him would surely be able to handle Sylvia Schuyler.’

"Are you hungry?"

Ethan Yardley asked with concern when the girl in his arms didn’t speak.

Serena Yardley nodded, saying pitifully, "I’m starving. I haven’t eaten a thing since yesterday."

"I know. How about you wash your face, and we’ll go get something to eat?"

Serena Yardley nodded. Just as she started to get up, he scooped her up into his arms, carrying her to the bathroom as she clung to him like a koala.

Serena Yardley didn’t resist, instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck.

Ethan Yardley set her down on the counter, took a washcloth to gently wipe her face, and then brushed her teeth for her.

When she was ready, he carried her back to the bedroom, combed her hair, and even knelt down to put on her shoes.

Watching Ethan’s tender and meticulous care, Serena couldn’t help but be touched.

’A man who treated her this well... he had to love her.’

’From now on, I’ll try to be more understanding.’

’I’ll try not to fight with him anymore.’
