Chapter 22: Chapter 22: A Thousand Ways to Deal With Her

That evening.

After putting Sylvia Schuyler to bed, Ethan Yardley returned to the master bedroom and received a call from his assistant, Yannick Young.

On the phone, Yannick said:

"Sir, we’ve investigated. The KTV’s surveillance footage was destroyed, so we haven’t yet found the person who tried to harm Miss Serena."

Ethan Yardley’s lips thinned into a tight line, his expression turning grim. "This is the only result you have for me?"

"I’m sorry. I’ll redouble my efforts immediately."

Ethan hung up and strode into the master bedroom.

Serena Yardley was already in bed.

Her heart felt heavy.

She hated seeing Ethan getting close to another woman.

She didn’t know how much longer she could endure this kind of life.

Hearing footsteps, Serena Yardley slowly sat up and saw Ethan, still in his day clothes, walking straight toward her.

He stood before her, his handsome face devoid of expression, and asked coolly:

"Is she faking it?"

Serena frowned, looking at Ethan’s cold expression without a word.

Ethan continued, "Serena Yardley, the facts prove she is blind. Don’t you dare bully her again."

It was a warning.

A sharp pang of bitterness shot through Serena’s heart. "When did I ever bully her?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

She tried to explain, "When you kissed me just now, she clearly couldn’t stand watching, and that’s why she got up and fell."

"She said she was getting me a glass of water. Who would be so stubborn as to slam their own knee into the hard corner of a coffee table? If it were you, wouldn’t you be afraid of the pain?"

Ethan cut her off coldly. "Besides, when I was kissing you, her expression didn’t change at all. Sylvia’s acting skills can’t be that good."

Serena was speechless.

’So I lost that little test just now?’

’But I could have sworn she was faking it.’

Not wanting to argue with Ethan, Serena lay back down, pulled the blanket over her head, and turned her back to the man standing by the bed.

Ethan didn’t press the matter, turning to change into his pajamas.

When he returned, he got into bed and lay down beside Serena.

Noticing that Serena didn’t snuggle into his arms the moment he got into bed like she used to, Ethan took the initiative to embrace her.

But to his surprise, Serena resentfully pushed him away.

Ethan was displeased. "Serena Yardley, are you acting up again?"

"I’m not. I just want to sleep by myself."

"Are you sure you want to sleep alone?"

...

Serena remained silent, her heart aching.

She hated how Ethan always wrongly accused her and lashed out at her without distinguishing right from wrong.

’But what can I do? I just love him so much I can’t leave him.’

Serena was starting to wonder if she was a masochist.

Knowing she couldn’t sleep soundly without Ethan beside her, she swallowed her pride, turned over, and snuggled into his arms, despite how upset she was.

Only then was Ethan satisfied, and he wrapped his arms around her.

"Just remember, I’m only making up for the harm I caused her. Don’t let your imagination run wild about anything else."

Serena didn’t make a sound.

’Lest he accuse me of acting up again.’

"Why aren’t you talking?" Ethan looked down at her.

Serena just pouted, refusing to speak.

Ethan reached out and pinched her round, fair little cheek. "Why are you pouting so hard? You could hang an oil pot from your lips."

"None of your business."

She swatted his hand away.

A smile touched the corners of Ethan’s lips. He leaned down and gave her full, rosy lips a firm peck before saying, "Go to sleep."

He habitually held her with both arms.

Serena’s body was delicate and soft, and she had a faint, natural scent.

That scent was his best sleeping pill.

Serena, in turn, habitually draped a leg over Ethan and used his arm as a pillow.

Sometimes, she would fall asleep like that, and wake up the next morning to find her small body sprawled on top of him.

Only then could she sleep soundly and peacefully.

...

The next day.

Serena was woken by a kiss.

Opening her eyes, she saw Ethan already impeccably dressed. She asked drowsily, "Ethan, what time is it? Are you leaving for work already?"

"Mhm."

Ethan sat on the edge of the bed and glanced at his watch. "Seven o’clock. You go back to sleep. I’m heading to work."

Serena remembered she was on vacation with nothing to do, and staying home meant having to see Sylvia.

She quickly sat up and looked at the man beside her.

"Can I go to the office with you? We can just say I’m starting my internship at your company early."

Ethan looked at her small, sleepy-eyed figure and scoffed.

"You’re a student, why would you go to work? It’s not like I can’t support you. I’ve assigned a driver to you. If you want to go out, have the driver take you. If you don’t want to go out, then learn to get along with Sylvia."

He stood up, adjusting his cufflinks, and left the room without lingering.

Serena didn’t say anything more.

’But get along with Sylvia? Impossible.’

’I refuse to even breathe the same air as that woman.’

Seeing that it was still early, Serena flopped back onto the bed and went back to sleep.

She didn’t get up until ten in the morning.

When she got up and went downstairs, she saw Mrs. Miller in the living room, massaging Sylvia’s legs.

And there was Sylvia, lying on the sofa like she was the lady of the manor, acting as if the place was her own home.

Serena pretended not to see them and headed for the kitchen.

Mrs. Miller quickly called out to her, "Miss Serena, you’re up! Just a moment, I’ll come and prepare something for you to eat."

"No need. I’ll just have some leftovers."

Serena opened the refrigerator to heat up some food for herself.

Mrs. Miller wanted to go help her, but Sylvia clung to her and wouldn’t let go.

In the end, Serena had to do it herself.

After lunch, she took a book and went to sit on the swing set in the back garden to read.

Anything to avoid being near Sylvia.

Sylvia didn’t deliberately try to pick a fight with Serena, either.

Until that afternoon.

Mrs. Miller went out to do some shopping. Sylvia, leaning on her cane, slowly fumbled her way toward the back garden.

Even though she clearly saw Serena on the swing set, she pretended she couldn’t see anything and called out:

"Serena Yardley! Serena Yardley..."

Serena looked up and saw Sylvia slowly making her way over. She got up and went into the house from the other side.

Seeing Serena avoid her again, Sylvia stood in place, plotting her next move.

’Does she really think she can solve anything by hiding from me?’

’I have a thousand ways to deal with a woman like her.’

Serena paid no mind to Sylvia heading into the backyard and went straight back to her room to lie down.

’Ethan always says I bully Sylvia. Fine. From now on, I’ll walk the other way whenever I see that woman. I won’t get within ten feet of her. Let’s see how Sylvia tries to frame me then.’

And so, Serena didn’t leave her room all afternoon.

That day, Ethan arrived home at six o’clock sharp.

Sylvia must have timed his arrival perfectly, for she theatrically stumbled and fell with her cane in the villa’s front yard.

Getting out of his car, Ethan happened to see Sylvia lying on the ground.

He rushed over to help her up, his voice filled with extreme impatience.

"Sylvia, how many times have I told you? If you’re going to be here, just stay put and don’t move around! Otherwise, go back to the hospital. How are you ever going to get better if you keep falling like this?"

Sylvia hadn’t expected her fall to earn her a scolding instead of Ethan’s concern and worry.

She immediately put on a self-reproachful, tearful expression and said:

"I’m sorry, Ethan. I heard the car and I knew you were back. I just wanted to come out and welcome you home."

"You’re blind and lame. The best you can do is not give me more to worry about. Get inside."

Ethan retorted heartlessly, but he still personally helped her back into the house.

Neither of them noticed that from a window on the second floor, Serena Yardley had witnessed the entire scene of the two of them entering the house, one supporting the other.
