Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Wrongly Accusing Her Again

Leaning against the window, Serena Yardley suddenly felt very lost about her future.

’If Ethan is eventually going to divorce me to marry Sylvia Schuyler, then what’s the point of holding on now?’

’Is it just because I love him and can’t leave him?’

’But that’s how things are now, and that’s how they’ll be in the future.’

’In the end, I’ll still be abandoned by Ethan.’

’So, Serena Yardley, you have to start learning to be independent, strong, and able to earn your own money for a life without Ethan.’

’Anyway, I’m on break with nothing to do. I’ll go out tomorrow and look for a suitable part-time job.’

’Once I start working, I’ll be leaving early and coming home late, so I won’t have to see Sylvia Schuyler.’

’And if I don’t see her, I won’t be in such a foul mood.’

Just as she had this thought, the bedroom door was pushed open.

The person who entered was none other than Ethan Yardley.

He was tall and proud in his suit, exuding the charm of a mature man—noble and refined.

Serena Yardley smiled faintly and walked over to him, calling out, "Ethan."

"Mm."

As Ethan Yardley changed his clothes, he asked, "Nothing unpleasant happened today, did it?"

Serena Yardley stood beside him, getting his clothes. "No, I’ve been reading all day."

"That’s good."

After changing into loungewear, Ethan Yardley faced the woman before him and studied her. "Something on your mind?"

He could still detect the subtle emotions mixed into her expression.

Serena Yardley shook her head. "No, of course not."

"Good. Let’s go downstairs for dinner."

He didn’t press the issue and walked past her to leave.

Serena Yardley suddenly called out again, "Ethan..."

Ethan Yardley turned back to look at her.

He saw Serena open her arms, her cheeks puffed out, acting childish again.

Ethan Yardley understood what she meant. He turned back and scooped her up, letting her wrap her legs around his waist.

"Serena Yardley, do I spoil you too much?"

’She even wants me to carry her just to go downstairs.’

’Since when did the once well-behaved, obedient, sensible, and grateful Serena start making such shameless demands on me?’

Ethan Yardley mused, ’Thankfully, I’m still young. Carrying a woman who weighs around ninety pounds is still pretty easy for me.’

’If I were old and she still wanted me to carry her like this, I’d be surprised if I didn’t throw out my back.’

"Ethan, you’ve always doted on me. I’m starting to suspect you had your eyes on me a long, long time ago."

Serena Yardley wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered in his ear.

Ethan Yardley scoffed, "I’m not that much of a predator."

"Then why have you been such an animal since we got married, wanting to... every single night?"

Hearing her, Ethan Yardley felt an inexplicable sense of guilt.

He patted her back. "Don’t say another word."

Serena Yardley opened her mouth and bit his ear.

The sensation sent a tingle through his entire body, like an electric shock.

He growled, "Serena Yardley..."

Only then did Serena Yardley behave. As she was being carried downstairs with her head resting on Ethan’s shoulder, she saw Sylvia Schuyler sitting in the dining room.

’She felt indignant, remembering how Ethan’s earlier test had failed, supposedly proving that Sylvia Schuyler was blind.’

She pressed close to Ethan’s ear again and said:

"Ethan, Sylvia can’t see us anyway. I want to keep hugging you like this."

"Then behave and don’t move."

"Okay~"

Seeing that Ethan had agreed, Serena Yardley didn’t dare to make any more moves.

Ethan Yardley carried her straight to the seat opposite Sylvia Schuyler and sat down, settling Serena on his lap.

Mrs. Miller was arranging the tableware, laughing inwardly to herself.

Sylvia Schuyler’s expression was absolutely thunderous.

But she didn’t dare react too strongly, sitting perfectly still as if she hadn’t seen a thing.

Mrs. Miller served rice and picked up some food, personally feeding Sylvia Schuyler. "Miss Schuyler, open your mouth. I’ll feed you."

Sylvia Schuyler opened her mouth with great reluctance.

As she ate, she deliberately asked Mrs. Miller, "Hasn’t Ethan come to eat yet?"

"Mr. Yardley is sitting right across from you."

"Oh~ I didn’t hear Ethan say anything."

Sylvia Schuyler asked the man across from her, "Ethan, where’s Serena Yardley?"

"Right here."

Ethan Yardley picked up some food and fed the girl on his lap.

Serena Yardley ate with great relish, smugly raising her eyebrows at Sylvia Schuyler from time to time to deliberately provoke her.

Sylvia Schuyler was seething.

But she had to pretend she saw nothing.

Serena Yardley also picked up her chopsticks, getting some food to feed him in return.

Ethan Yardley was quite cooperative.

The two went back and forth, looking incredibly affectionate.

The sight even made Mrs. Miller blush.

One could only imagine how Sylvia Schuyler, the would-be usurper, must have been feeling.

After finally making it through dinner, Sylvia Schuyler saw Ethan Yardley carry Serena Yardley back to the living room sofa before asking Mrs. Miller to bring him his laptop.

He was clearly working, yet he still let Serena Yardley stay in his arms. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Sylvia Schuyler felt that if she watched their public display of affection for one more second, she would definitely show her true colors.

She couldn’t stand this humiliation anymore and suddenly stood up, saying:

"Ethan, my head hurts a little. I want to go back to my room and rest."

Ethan Yardley grunted "Mm," and looked at Mrs. Miller. "Help her back to her room to rest."

Before Mrs. Miller could get close to Sylvia Schuyler, Sylvia Schuyler cried out:

"Ethan, I can’t sleep without you with me. I’m scared. Can you take me back to my room first and leave after I’ve fallen asleep, please?"

With no other choice, Ethan Yardley closed his laptop and pried Serena Yardley from his embrace.

Serena Yardley was so angry, but she had to behave and curl up on the sofa to wait.

"Let’s go. I’ll help you."

As Sylvia Schuyler wished, Ethan Yardley helped her upstairs.

They slowly walked into Sylvia Schuyler’s room. Knowing she couldn’t see, Ethan Yardley personally pulled back the covers for her.

But as he did, he was shocked to see several live frogs, dead koi fish, and repulsive earthworms and ants in the middle of the large bed.

As Ethan Yardley flung back the covers, a few of the frogs began to hop about energetically.

One even jumped directly onto Sylvia Schuyler.

Terrified, Sylvia Schuyler screamed, "AHHHH~~~ What is it? What’s on me, Ethan..."

Ethan Yardley quickly pulled Sylvia Schuyler close, his eyes on the pile on the bed as he bellowed toward the doorway:

"Mrs. Miller, get up here!"

Hearing Mr. Yardley’s furious roar, Mrs. Miller rushed upstairs.

When she walked into the room and saw the things on Sylvia Schuyler’s bed, she was also shocked.

"What’s going on? Who did this?" Ethan Yardley snapped.

Mrs. Miller quickly lowered her head and shook it. "Sir, I don’t know. It absolutely wasn’t me. I wouldn’t dare put these things on Miss Schuyler’s bed, not even if I had a hundred times the nerve."

Sylvia Schuyler asked with feigned innocence, "Ethan, what is it? What’s on my bed?"

"It’s nothing."

Ethan Yardley seemed to know who had done it. He ordered Mrs. Miller, "Prepare a new room."

"Yes, sir." Mrs. Miller quickly exited.

Ethan Yardley waited for Mrs. Miller to prepare the new room. Only after he settled Sylvia Schuyler in and she had fallen asleep did he go downstairs.

Serena Yardley was sitting on the living room sofa. Seeing Ethan come down, she quickly asked:

"Ethan, what happened just now? You were yelling so loudly."

Ethan Yardley came to stand before Serena Yardley, towering over her, his face like ice.

"Serena Yardley, just because I dote on you, do you think you can get away with anything?"

Realizing Ethan was angry with her, Serena Yardley was completely baffled.

She sat cross-legged on the sofa, tilting her head up to meet his gaze, not understanding. "Ethan, what are you talking about?"

"Don’t play dumb with me. Who else in this house plays with creatures from the water besides you?"

Serena Yardley, "..."

Having absolutely no idea what Ethan was talking about, she stood up on the sofa, finally able to meet his gaze at eye level.

"Ethan, you can’t just accuse people for no reason! What on earth did I do this time to make you so angry?"
