Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 97: She Finally Became Obedient
Overnight, Serena Yardley had another change of heart.
The next morning, she made a point of coming downstairs on time for breakfast.
It was also the first time she had willingly sat across from Ethan Yardley to share a meal with him.
Ethan Yardley was dressed in a gray suit today, with a black shirt and a striped tie. The tailored clothes fit him perfectly, adding an extra layer of charm befitting a successful man to his already tall and mature frame.
Combined with his chiseled, ruggedly handsome face, he was exceptionally eye-catching even when just sitting there casually.
Serena Yardley had to admit, aside from being a bit domineering and tyrannical, there was really nothing to fault about this old man.
So, she decided to stay put and see how things played out.
Seeing Serena sitting across from him, Ethan Yardley gestured and said, "Go on, eat. I’ll take you to school afterward."
Serena Yardley nodded. She lowered her head and took a couple of bites before meeting the man’s gaze again.
"Um, the real reason I was making a fuss about divorcing you was because Sylvia Schuyler told me a lot of things about you."
"Anyway, from the way Sylvia described you, you’re not a good man at all."
Ethan Yardley frowned. "What did she tell you?"
Serena Yardley spoke as she ate.
"She said you sent someone to make me miscarry my child, that you drove me to jump into a river and commit suicide, and that you only married me to produce an heir for the Yardley Family."
Ethan Yardley’s face darkened, but his voice was gentle and exceedingly patient when he replied.
"First of all, if I wanted a child, there are plenty of women willing to have one with me. Why would I insist on you?"
"Secondly, if I drove you to suicide, why would I bring you back home and not divorce you?"
"As for the child you lost, I honestly didn’t even know when you got pregnant."
"But I will get to the bottom of it. My men have already confirmed that you were indeed kidnapped that day. I just haven’t found the people who did it yet."
Serena had told him before that she had been kidnapped.
At the time, he had been blinded by anger and didn’t believe her at all.
Later, he had Yannick Young investigate, and it turned out Serena had indeed been kidnapped and taken to a warehouse.
However, they only managed to get a short video clip and still had no idea who the kidnappers were.
As for Gabriel Galloway, he was beaten half to death by Ethan’s men, and it was unclear if he survived.
His men couldn’t find him afterward.
Seeing that the man across from her didn’t seem to be lying, Serena Yardley asked again:
"Then on the day I jumped into the river, were you with me?"
Ethan Yardley lowered his gaze. The memory of that day still made his heart ache.
He replied, "I wasn’t with you. If I had been, I wouldn’t have let you do something so foolish."
"Then what kind of person do you think I am? Do I seem like someone who would choose suicide after a setback?"
Serena Yardley pressed, her eyes fixed on him.
Ethan Yardley looked back at her.
For some reason, he felt a twinge of guilt.
He recalled how he had hurt her deeply on multiple occasions because of Sylvia Schuyler’s presence.
He didn’t know if she had been so utterly desperate that she chose suicide.
When Ethan Yardley didn’t answer, Serena Yardley asked, "Since Sylvia Schuyler is your secretary, was she with you that day?"
Ethan Yardley replied, "She was."
"When the incident happened, was Sylvia in your line of sight?"
Ethan Yardley said, "She wasn’t."
Serena Yardley suddenly grew a little excited and continued to press him.
"Then the ’me’ from before—did I know about your relationship with Sylvia? What was my relationship with her like?"
Ethan Yardley hadn’t wanted to bring up the past.
But seeing how interested Serena was, he answered her questions one by one to clear up her confusion.
"You didn’t like Sylvia. The two of you were practically at each other’s throats."
Serena Yardley was speechless.
’No kidding. Who would ever like their love rival?’
Even now, seeing Sylvia Schuyler again, she disliked her from the bottom of her heart.
Serena Yardley continued, "What about Sylvia, then? What was her attitude toward me? Did she hate me?"
Ethan Yardley thought for a moment and said, "I don’t know what she was thinking, but her actions always seemed poised and gracious. She forgave you many times for the things you did to her."
Serena Yardley was speechless again.
Looking at the man across from her and listening to his words, she was starting to get the picture.
She gave a little smile and lowered her head to continue eating.
Ethan Yardley asked her, "What are you smiling about?"
"Nothing."
’Just from his assessment of Sylvia, she could imagine how much he must have made her suffer for that woman’s sake in the past.’
’And that Sylvia Schuyler... she seems to have a few different faces, doesn’t she?’
’The first time they met on Phantom Isle, she clearly could have told her everything then.’
’But she didn’t. Instead, she waited until after seeing Ethan Yardley to rush over and explain it all.’
’Isn’t that just a classic case of ’if I can’t have him, nobody can’? A real ’misery loves company’ situation!’
’She got it now.’
After breakfast, Ethan Yardley picked up Serena Yardley’s backpack and they left the house together.
Serena Yardley didn’t refuse and obediently got into the car with him.
Yannick Young drove, while the two of them sat in the back.
They didn’t say much to each other on the way.
They didn’t even exchange a single word by the time they reached the school and Serena Yardley got out.
Taking the backpack the man handed her, Serena Yardley waved.
"Thanks. If you won’t let me live on campus, then you can just drive me to and from school every day from now on."
’She had come to terms with it anyway. She would follow her own instincts and not let others lead her by the nose.’
"Alright. Call me if anything comes up," Ethan Yardley replied.
Serena Yardley paid them no more mind, slinging her backpack over her shoulder and walking cheerfully toward the school gate.
Just as she stepped onto campus, her roommate ran up from behind, wide-eyed and excited, asking:
"Holy shit, Serena Yardley! Are you really the young lady of some super-rich family? The car you just got out of... that thing has to be worth at least ten million, right?"
Seeing it was Kylie Cross, Serena Yardley quickly raised a hand to cover her mouth.
"SHH! Don’t blow my cover. Keep it low-key. We have to be low-key."
Kylie Cross understood and nodded hurriedly.
But she was still so excited, she offered the soy milk and fried dough sticks she had just bought to Serena Yardley. "I just got these. Want some?"
"I’ve already eaten."
"Right. A rich girl like you probably has maids and nannies preparing your meals in the morning. *Sniffle*... Serena, I’m so jealous of you."
Serena Yardley smiled, lifting her chin with a hint of playful pride.
"Well, you’d better be nice to me, then. Maybe I can introduce you to a rich and handsome boyfriend someday."
"Really?"
Hearing this, Kylie Cross became even more attentive.
She quickly took Serena Yardley’s backpack and began waiting on her, bowing and scraping.
"In that case, Miss Serena, my future boyfriend is in your hands! This way, please. Be careful not to trip."
Serena Yardley played the part of a Princess, putting on airs.
Who would have thought that before she could properly enjoy this Princess treatment, a few menacing-looking female students would appear ahead of them.
Serena Yardley pulled Kylie Cross aside, trying to walk around them.
But for every step they took to go around, the other group took a step to block them.
They were clearly looking for trouble.
Serena Yardley’s face instantly fell, her aura turning cold. "Good dogs don’t block the road. Move."
