Chapter 96: Chapter 96: Having Serena Is Enough

As the man walked toward her, Serena Yardley didn’t hesitate, placing the Divorce Agreement directly on the coffee table.

She gestured at it. "Since you already have it prepared, you might as well sign it."

’He wants me to have his child? Not a chance in hell.’

Ethan Yardley’s brow furrowed as he looked at the "Divorce Agreement" on the coffee table.

’She rushed back from school this early just for this?’

Ethan’s expression suddenly darkened. "Serena Yardley, are you just completely unreasonable?"

He had tried every way to reason with her, but she wouldn’t listen. She just had to act up, had to provoke him.

Serena’s face was just as grim as she confronted him, shouting:

"This is the Divorce Agreement *you* prepared. I just signed it. Since it was all ready, why are you dragging this out?"

"I prepared it a while ago. I just forgot to throw it away."

He stepped forward, picked it up, and tore it to pieces without hesitation before tossing it into the trash can.

Watching him, Serena said angrily:

"Does tearing it up prove that you love me and don’t want to divorce me anymore?"

Ethan didn’t want to argue about this every time he came home.

He tossed out a line, "Just stay here by yourself."

He turned and headed upstairs. He really didn’t want her to keep fighting with him incessantly.

’Is there any point in continuing to fight like this?’

’Who did she think he, Ethan Yardley, was? She should be content that he was this tolerant of her.’

’But instead, she was being ungrateful again and again.’

’He had his limits, too.’

"Ethan Yardley, you just see me as a tool for bearing children! I’m telling you, even if we don’t get a divorce, I will never have a child for you in this lifetime!"

Seeing the man heading upstairs, Serena stood up and yelled at his back.

Ethan had reached the middle of the staircase when her words made him stop abruptly and turn around.

Dressed in a sharp black suit that accentuated his tall, straight figure, he stood there looking down imperiously at Serena in the living room. He replied coldly:

"I’m not forcing you to have a child. I don’t care if you never have one.

Serena Yardley, I hope you understand one thing: without me, Ethan Yardley, you wouldn’t be where you are today. I don’t know where you get the audacity to fight with me every single day."

’If he didn’t teach her a lesson, she would never learn to behave.’

’Who could feel at ease with this constant fighting?’

Feeling utterly irritated, Ethan turned and continued up the stairs.

Serena retracted her gaze and slumped onto the sofa.

She knew she was an orphan and owed everything she had today to that man.

But the things Sylvia Schuyler had told her were like a poison, constantly eating away at her mind and causing her immense pain.

To escape this pain, her only choice was to run away from him.

Realizing that the divorce was a lost cause again, Serena got up, wanting to go back to school.

But as she reached the door, Mrs. Miller called out to stop her. "Miss Serena, it’s almost time for dinner. Where are you going?"

Serena turned to look at Mrs. Miller. "I’m going back to school to eat. You can just cook for him."

"How can you do that? You have to spend the night at home. It’s the master’s orders."

Serena suddenly remembered she no longer had a bed in her dorm room. After a moment of hesitation, she decided to stay.

She just ate her food quickly, then rushed back to her room and locked the door from the inside.

When Ethan came downstairs for dinner and didn’t see Serena, he looked at Mrs. Miller and said, "Tell her to come down and eat."

"Miss Serena has already eaten. She also said she had a bit of a headache and went back to her room to rest."

Mrs. Miller replied.

Ethan frowned. ’Did my harsh words earlier make her so upset that it gave her a headache?’

A pang of guilt hit him. After dinner, now dressed in loungewear, Ethan went to Serena’s door and knocked.

Serena pretended not to hear and didn’t open the door.

Ethan used the spare key to let himself in.

Seeing her curled up under the covers, seemingly asleep, he walked over, sat on the edge of the bed, and asked in a low voice, "Are you asleep?"

Serena rolled over, not making a sound.

Her head was buried tightly under the blanket.

Ethan reached out to pull the blanket back. "Aren’t you afraid you’ll suffocate? If you’re going to sleep, then sleep properly. Why are you wrapped up so tightly?"

When the blanket was pulled away, Serena quickly averted her eyes and turned her back to him.

Watching her deliberately avoid him, Ethan felt an unexpected ache in his heart.

"Serena, I know you have a prejudice against me, but you need to understand something. I only keep you by my side because I want you to be well and live a carefree life."

"I also hope you’ll truly see me as your family, stop throwing tantrums at me all the time, and stop bringing up divorce."

He worked over ten hours a day at the company, and when he came home, he still had to coax her.

It was fine when she wasn’t acting up, but whenever she did, he felt physically and mentally exhausted.

There were times when he, too, felt hopeless about this kind of married life.

Serena pouted, her small face scrunched up as she remained silent.

For a moment, she didn’t know who to believe.

’What Sylvia Schuyler said were all facts.’

’But what Ethan said wasn’t without reason, either. So, who should she believe?’

Ethan reached for her small hand. "Turn your face toward me and tell me what’s really on your mind. What are you thinking?

Or if you have any doubts, just ask. I’ll answer them all for you."

It was better than her throwing a major fit every three days and a minor one every two.

It was truly unsettling.

Serena pulled her hand away. Still not looking at him, she said resentfully: 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

"I’ll stay by your side, but I won’t have a child for you. Not in this lifetime."

’If he only saw her as a tool for bearing children, then her existence would be useless if she didn’t have one, and he would naturally let her go, right?’

But to her surprise, Ethan agreed without a moment’s hesitation:

"If you don’t want to have children, then don’t. I won’t force you. Besides, you can go ask them at the old family estate. I told them from the very beginning that I’m child-free."

Serena was a little surprised.

She suddenly sat up and looked at him. "You don’t want children?"

Seeing that she was finally willing to look at him, Ethan’s gaze filled with tenderness. "Mhm. Having Serena is enough for me."

’This person, in his heart, was far more of a handful than any child.’

’Raising a wife was more enjoyable than raising a child anyway.’

Serena was speechless.

’Ethan was actually child-free?’

’In that case, wouldn’t Sylvia Schuyler’s claims fall apart?’

’So she had wrongly accused this man?’

Suddenly feeling that she had indeed been acting up, Serena lowered her head in embarrassment, her voice much softer now.

"Um... you should go. I need to rest."

Ethan remained seated. "Is your head hurting again? Do you want to go to the hospital to get it checked?"

Serena shook her head. "No, it’s fine. I’ll be okay after a little rest."

"Then go to sleep. I’ll stay here with you. I’ll leave after you’ve fallen asleep."

Serena muttered, "Who knows if you’ll try to pull something on me while I’m asleep."

Ethan felt like crying but had no tears. "Do you want to see that little video I filmed before? Who exactly was trying to pull something on whom?"

’She made him sound like some kind of beast.’

’Even if he did have illicit intentions, he was selective about his target.’

’There were so many women in the world; it’s not like he, Ethan Yardley, would fall for just anyone.’

Serena avoided his gaze, suddenly acting much more familiar with him.

"Just get out. How am I supposed to sleep with a grown man watching over me?"

Ethan was helpless. Like an old father, he could only give in to her.

"Alright, alright. You sleep. I won’t disturb you. Keep the blanket on, and if you feel unwell during the night, just call for me. I’m in the room next door."

Serena replied obediently, "Mhm."

After watching the man leave, she lay down and stared blankly at the ceiling again.

’What was happening? She suddenly felt that this old man was actually quite nice.’

’On the other hand, she felt Sylvia Schuyler had ulterior motives.’

’She needed to properly investigate what really happened with Sylvia’s miscarriage and suicide attempt by jumping into the river.’

’She couldn’t just foolishly believe a one-sided story and misunderstand the person who was actually good to her.’
