Space Odyssey: Spectre-Chapter 173: Covering the Stairs
Chapter 173: Covering the Stairs
Jace shakeily made his way around the stairs to find that only the blockheads were left. All of the hellhounds in the room had run at him. He walked up to the first one that seemed to be discombobulated and swung the cannon at its head. It went flying easily.
The other blockheads seemed just as discombobulated. He understood a moment later as he realized that Jace could not hear anything. While his helmet systems were showing that the outside noise gate had been closed automatically. Because a sound too loud for normal humans to survive was generated.
It seems just firing that cannon in an enclosed space was too much for these things. He tossed aside the tri-barreled cannon and pulled out his knife. He quickly made short work of the remaining blockheads.
He then walked toward the doorway he came in through and found Parrot in a daze. "Parrot, are you alright?" He waved his hand in front of her. She nodded absentmindedly before shaking her head and completely waking up.
"What the hell was that? My audio is off." Parrot stood up with Tako still in her arms.
"That was the cannon I was carrying. I fired off a bunch of shots in a short amount of time. If our armor had not disabled the inputting audio then we might have lost our hearing for a bit. Come on, we are at the stairs." Jace pulled the assault rifle off his back.
He walked back into the room, looked up the stairs and down them. Going down would lead to the basement where an array of interconnecting trains were likely moving through. Going up would lead to the lab floor, then the roof.
Suddenly there was static on the local channel followed by people speaking. "-in sight. I repeat the end point is in sight." One person said.
"Good, that means we are almost there. Front lines, get ready for a fight. Medical teams get ready to help them." They could hear Spectre Dahlia order over the communication channel. It appears they were almost there.
Instead of speaking his orders, Jace looked at Parrot and then made several hand motions. She nodded and they started making their way down the stairs. At the bottom was a door they could push open. But there was not much else.
He made more motions and Parrot walked under the stairs and set Tako down along with her gear bag and other equipment. Jace set his equipment bag on the ground and it started expanding to a stand again. He pulled out the Dragon’s Breath and set it on the stand.
He then crouched down and began making additional connections from the stand to the stand to other battery packs that were spares for the gun. He then nodded once he was done. A shield appeared around and above the stand and around the Dragon’s Breath. But the barrels of the gun were sticking out the other side.
"Contact! We need to get past these things! They are heavily armored in the front." Jace could hear someone scream over the communication channel. He could also hear the sound of combat beyond the door.
He stepped up to the door and kicked it. The door went flying into the large room that was filled with trains and firing. They had a clear view of the back of the biomechanical soldiers as they fired lasers and bullets at Jace’s fellow soldiers.
Jace pushed the stand forward so it was in the doorway. While the door he kicked slammed into the back of a biomechanical creature, knocking it down and causing others nearby to be confused. Jace waved at the stand once it was set up and then he moved up the stairs. "Have fun! Tell me when you have others supporting you." Jace instructed as he moved up the stairs.
There was immediate confusion over the local channel. But it was followed by celebration a moment later as Parrot began firing. "Oh, woah. This thing is really nice to shoot. It melts through the enemy like they are nothing."
Jace chuckled as he arrived at the first floor that was still completely decimated. He looked around before moving further up the stairs and taking position on them. He only had to wait a moment before a door opened up. It was supposed to lead to the second floor balcony, but he had completely destroyed it so it instead led to a drop that the blockhead fell to.
It was dead before it hit the ground as Jace aimed and fired his assault rifle. Hitting between the body and head. Blue blood spraying out of the creature. He then aimed as another door opened, this one was on the first floor. It was the one leading to the massive area that he did not want to enter.
He switched his audio back on when he realized he still could not hear. He then fired at the biomechanical creature that tried entering through the door. It fell limp to the ground as he slid a bullet between the creatures chest and head at a diagonal angle. It blocked the door for a moment. Allowing him time to turn his attention to another door that slid open.
The first one out of this door was a hellhound which slid across the ground leaving a blood trail after Jace shot it. He then heard another door open and spun around in confusion until he heard a noise and ducked. He looked up the stairs and saw a fully mechanical creature was swinging... medical devices?
It was attempting to attack him from the third floor. It had several different limbs, it was the type of mechanical device that doctors would use during surgery but every hand had something useful for cutting. He aimed and fired, destroying the central processor that was visible.
He then aimed back down at the first floor and fired a burst of bullets at the fast moving biomechanical model soldiers that had climbed over the first one’s body. Only one of them died as the other two were just immobilized.
If he had grenades this would be much easier. He fired at another falling from the second floor. He then had to dodge to the side as a hellhound came from the third floor and jumped at him. It went flying and slammed into the wall before falling to the first floor. Yelping when it fell to the ground.
Jace kept rotating and firing at the various doors that were opening up. He went through two magazines before the signal came from the basement. "I have backup down here now. You are good to go Spectre Jace." Parrot informed him.
Jace grunted over the channel and then moved up the stairs. "Make sure the medics take Tako back to the Anvil." Jace instructed as he looked for and located the camera that was watching him. He quickly shot them out. Then he pressed his hand against an electrical panel.
"All forces prepare to abandon Bastion Research Center." A voice spoke over the intercom. Jace recognized it as Lord Hoodwink’s voice. He sounded scared or nervous. He smiled under his helmet.
He then focused on his power and the structure itself that Hoodwink had called Bastion Research Center. It was just as massive as before. But with an actual electrical connection he could see more detail.
A large amount of power was moving from base and was focused on certain parts of the facility. He could also clearly see the large object in the center of the structure and discovered the purpose of the center structure.
It was for a massive spaceship, one that he could only categorize as a warship. He could not see the specifics of the design but it seemed to be less weaponized than the single warship he had seen. Nor was it as bulky as other warships he had seen designs for. This one was clearly made for speed and maneuverability.
It was still unfinished. There were parts of the warship that were clearly still under construction. But since they had invaded, Lord Hoodwink probably decided to skip completely finishing it before he took off. They had focused on the critical aspects so it could still take off, but that was worrying. But he had a plan.
A plan to both escape from Hoodwink’s watchful gaze since he is definitely watching out for him. But also to delay the man’s takeoff. It would just take a lot of his concentration. It would also be the most he had used the power like this.
Jace took a deep breath and then pulled the electricity from the structure. He pulled it all at once. All of the electricity moved through his body. The structure essentially powered off for ten seconds, forcing a reset on all the systems. While Jace used the electricity to power up his armor and then overcharge it. He ran to the stairs and moved up them while the power was out.
A few seconds later he was moving through a door and was at his destination. But he had to stop in his tracks when he ran into someone he was not expecting.
