Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 384: Between Sisters
I hesitated for a few seconds as I debated with myself whether or not I should confess to Diana.
"This is a secret for now," I told her before taking a deep breath. My words clearly got Diana’s attention as she nodded her head firmly a couple of times.
"I am so good with secrets," Diana declared confidently.
I gave her a dubious look because, based on her historical track record, she wasn’t exactly great at keeping secrets.
"Desmond wants us to get engaged. I mean, he wants us to announce our engagement, but it’s not supposed to be real. It’s all supposed to be just an act," I quickly explained before Diana could jump to the wrong conclusions.
"I have to say that I didn’t really see that coming," Diana said with a thoughtful look on her face.
"I guess it’s always been a possibility, but I didn’t think that he would take things this far or this fast," I said before letting out a soft sigh.
"Guess you’ll be having that argument with your dear husband sometime very soon," Diana said with no sense of sympathy. I knew that she only intended to tease me, but she was definitely right. There was no way that Bradon could act understanding about this. The fact that there seemed to be some pretty bad blood between the two of them only added fuel to the fire.
"Don’t make that face. If you don’t want to go along with his plan, you can always turn him down," Diana advised before bringing her teacup to her lips and taking a sip.
Her beautiful eyes watched me from over the rim of her teacup as she waited for my response. Had the one who proposed engagement to me not been the king of the country, I would have no problem turning him down. Then again, there was also the matter of the thing that Desmond promised to do for me. It felt like he had finally offered me the silver bullet that I had always been looking for, but little did I know about the price that I was supposed to pay for it.
"You’re hesitating, I can tell. What dirt does he have on you this time?" Diana asked before letting out a teasing laugh.
"He doesn’t have any dirt on me," I replied before glaring at my sister.
"Well then, what kind of offer did he make in return?" my sister asked knowingly.
At times like these, I wished that Diana didn’t know me so well. She grinned at me, and I knew that I couldn’t keep the secret from her. On the other hand, it might only be fair for my sister to find out about this so that she wouldn’t be completely shocked when the time came for our family to fall from grace and lose all its power.
"Desmond promised that he would disqualify the head of the Alnault family from the upcoming election," I announced coldly without wanting to call that man my father if I could help it.
Diana stared at me with wide eyes in complete silence for a few seconds before she let out a soft laugh and covered her beautiful lips.
"It’s an offer that I can’t afford to turn down," I confessed, but it did not make the heavy feeling in my heart any lighter.
"I have to say that I didn’t think that he would go that far for you. This is a major decision that is going to put him in a difficult position as well, even if he is the king," Diana said after a moment of thought. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
"Aren’t you going to stop me?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"Why do you think I would stop you?" my sister asked, grinning at me with bright eyes.
"Well, the Alnault family will never be the same again and..." I said before trailing off.
Diana nodded her head slightly as if she had already come to terms with what was about to happen to our family as a result of my decision and Desmond’s actions.
"You should do whatever you want to do. I don’t think I have the right to stop you, and I’m not sure that I want to," Diana said while sounding much calmer than I thought possible.
There was a part of me that expected my sister to freak out now that our family was truly on the verge of losing its power and social standing. Undoubtedly, Diana would be caught up in the crossfire regardless of what I wanted or how much I wanted to shield her from the damage. Despite that, Diana seemed very resigned to her fate and whatever might happen in the future as if she was ready to take it all.
"Aren’t you scared of what’s going to happen? It’s going to impact you as well," I reminded her in case she had forgotten.
"You don’t need to worry about me, I’ll manage no matter what happens," Diana said before she suddenly reached out a hand to grab mine. When our eyes met, I could tell that Diana meant every word that she had just said. Her sincerity almost brought tears to my eyes.
"Well, it’s not like I’m going to get off without any trouble. Just like you, I’ll be facing some hell of my own," I said while thinking of how I was supposed to manage Bradon’s anger when he found out about this.
"As for that, your dear beautiful sister here just might have a solution for you," Diana said before she smiled like a mischievous angel.
...
**A few days later**
It honestly was my intention to let Bradon know about Desmond’s to announce our engagement to the public and also what Diana had proposed, but whenever I was with him, I found myself avoiding the topic. Even though I thought that I had made up my mind, when the time came, I was so tongue-tied that I couldn’t bring up the subject. The fact that our relationship was progressing so smoothly well only hindered my determination to let Bradon know the truth about my upcoming engagement with Desmond.
