Chapter 22: Small Success

The transaction went through surprisingly quickly.

By the time Isabella regained her composure, her phone had pinged, telling her that she had received exactly two hundred thousand in her account.

But the most important detail was the source number it had come from.

Kaelian’s number.

Finally, after a decade, she finally got what she had always wanted. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

She couldn’t count how many times she imagined getting it. Or how desperate she was to get the number of the man who had saved her once.

Naturally, her obsession did lead her to want to get it through other means. There were other people who had his phone number. She could ask them or bribe them into giving it to her.

Or, just hack into his phone and get it.

But—Isabella didn’t want to live like that. She didn’t want to face him in the future after doing such a distasteful act.

Even if it meant never getting a chance of standing before him again.

Yet, despite all the odds, she got what she wanted.

"Can I have the earrings now?" Kaelian asked, putting his phone back into his pocket.

He stood tall and straight inside the store, like a Greek statue. Forgetting his defect would’ve been easy if he had just stood there. Many would approach him unwittingly, like a bee to honey.

Isabella knew she would.

"Please wait here." Isabella held the earrings in her hand and walked to Elise.

Elise didn’t need Isabella to order her. She quickly produced a separate box for the earrings and wrapped it up. She handed the bag, where the jewelry box was inside, and gave it back to Isabella.

Before Isabella turned around, Elise winked at her—go for it!

Isabella felt her cheeks and ears burn. She just became aware of how she must have looked in others’ eyes.

No matter what explanation she would give, it would be useless after what she had just done.

She needed to talk to Elise later and tell her not to report this to Julienne.

After grabbing the bag, Isabella was about to turn around and give it to him. But she stopped mid-turn as her mind turned quickly.

A twinkle appeared in her eyes.

A moment later, she finally handed the bag to Kaelian, who was patiently waiting for it.

"Thank you for buying from our store." Isabella did her best to sound like an employee there. Her lips curling wide into a beaming smile.

Kaelian nodded curtly at her, holding the paper bag in his hand as he proceeded to leave the store.

The sound of his cane hitting against the floor resumed.

"Come again!"

Isabella called out as his back slowly disappeared outside. She didn’t know if he had heard that. But after she said those words, she quickly regretted it.

How could she say that? It’s not as if she were truly working there. What was the use of saying it?

And so what if he does come again? She can’t always be at the store and wait for his return, right?

But regret wasn’t something she wanted to feel toward Kaelian. No matter how stupid or embarrassed she was in the way she acted towards Kaelian, she didn’t care.

"Do me a favor..." She turned back to the counter where Elise stood with a wide smile.

"Hm?"

"If he comes back... do tell me."

"You want to come back here when he returns?" Elise found her words strange. Maybe even insane. Isabella would think the same if she were in her place.

But she already held the gun and pulled the trigger. She could only bite the gun and continue this farce.

"But what if you get here too late?" Elise’s question wasn’t unreasonable.

Isabella wasn’t Superwoman or the Flash. She can’t possibly fly or transport in no time. Even if she rode the pod or a motorcycle, time and distance would still become a factor to consider.

Besides, Kaelian might not come back alone. Perhaps, he might even bring the person whom he wanted to buy those earrings for.

Feeling dejected about this, Isabella decided to forget about it. She can’t hang around here all the time.

Plus, would she be able to take it easy if he brought another woman?

It’s funny that she felt jealous of someone when she was nothing to Kaelian.

But she couldn’t help it. He was the raft during a storm in the middle of the ocean. She could never let go of him—or her feelings for him.

He was the only one who made her feel complete, even when he could never be hers.

After telling Elise there was no need to tell her whenever Kaelian comes back to the store, Isabella left and returned to the mansion.

The world returned to its stillness, gray color. Everything became monotonous and lifeless again.

The mansion in front of her opened its maw, dragging her back into it, and swallowed her whole.

"Where have you been?" Vanessa turned her head and asked, resting in the living room.

Isabella wanted to ignore her and treat her like a bug—unimportant and irritating to look at.

Yet, she stopped walking to take a detour and sat across from her cousin.

Vanessa scornfully looked at her.

Isabella smiled back at her. "Didn’t I say I was going to meet my classmates?"

"Really?" Vanessa scoffed. "That’s not what Rebecca told me. She told me you didn’t come to your little book club meeting."

Isabella glanced down at her feet.

Again, nothing around her moved without strings.

They were all puppets made to watch and report her actions.

It was already sickening and suffocating how they could go as far as invade the little space she made at the book club to breathe once a while.

Now, Vanessa was thinking she had every right to question her. Was it because she was gloating over the fact that they succeeded in taking the necklace from her.

"So?" Isabella looked up with the same smile that didn’t quite reach her ice-cold eyes. "What are you going to do about it?"
