The Billionaire Can't Escape His Shameless Heiress Wife!-Chapter 4: Fooling Everyone
The grand banquet continued. With the night growing deeper, the huge hall, illuminated by the exquisite and bright chandeliers, shone even more. The music was flowing in the air, enthralling people to slow dance along with it.
Countless gorgeously dressed men and women found their partners, held onto each other’s arms, and joined in the throng of people who were dancing in the center. Everyone seemed to be immersed in this kind of hustle and bustle. Nothing seemed to disrupt it.
But underneath this peaceful atmosphere, a current that couldn’t be concealed passed through, as if one mistake, and that calmness would snap.
This was all because of the one protagonist, who stole everyone’s attention.
Kaelian Veyron.
Everyone had more or less come to a tacit understanding. No one should ever mention anything about the accident that transpired a year ago or even try to offend the young master of the Veyron family.
Although no one had spoken about it, it seemed that the Veyron family had already made up their mind about making him the head of the family.
Thus, even with the guts of a tiger, no one dared to offend such a powerful man.
"You came to the banquet so suddenly, only to stay in a corner?" Ace Smith smoothly slid beside him. Even with the pressure of several pairs of eyes watching him, he didn’t seem to care about them at all. "Shouldn’t you mingle with those old men?"
When the other didn’t reply, Ace didn’t seem to care. He glanced around and finally noticed the object in his friend’s hand. "That lady’s courage is so strong."
The lady he was talking about was none other than Isabella, who had not just defended Kaelian but also boldly approached him and offered him a glass of wine.
"Or maybe you’re just too handsome?" Ace smirked with a raised eyebrow.
Dark eyebrows pinched, Kaelian didn’t respond to his teasing.
"Have you learned who she was?"
Ace wiped the smirk off his face and nodded. "Isabella Harrington. That’s right. It’s that Harrington family. It’s a surprise that despite her and your family’s rivalry in business, she approached you publicly. Do you think she and her family have something devious in mind?"
Kaelian lowered his head. Who knows if he was actually listening?
Ace wasn’t bothered by the inattentiveness his friend showed, even though he was the one who wanted the information. He continued, "Still, it’s strange."
"What is?" Kaelian asked.
"If the Harringtons wanted to do business with you, why would they use her instead of her sister?" Ace tilted his head slightly, rubbing his chin in thought. "Using a plain-looking woman like her, do they really think you’d taste anything for as long as it’s a woman? Ah! Could it be that they think that since you’re blind, it’s fine to deceive you?"
His imagination was truly extraordinary. Ace even thought so as he nodded at himself, praising himself for finding the truth behind Isabella’s actions earlier.
"But... aren’t they afraid of retribution?" Ace cautiously turned his gaze to the man next to him. "I wonder if they’d regret crossing you if they find out you’re not blind."
Ace looked at Kaelian’s eyes. It was hard to believe that the man who everyone thought was blind had been making a fool of them for an entire year. Even with the pretense of his sight gone, Ace could still see the madness that lay within.
"What did you say?" Kaelian gazed back at him, blinking his eyes calmly.
Swallowing the words that wanted to come out of his throat, Ace carefully said, "Nothing."
If a man said he’s blind, he’s blind. No one should refute it. Especially if that person was Kaelian.
"By the way, aren’t you going to drink that?" Ace asked, glancing down at the wineglass in Kaelian’s hand.
Kaelian had been holding it since earlier. Ace only noticed it after being reminded about Isabella.
"No."
"Then, why not give it to me—"
Kaelian’s response was not out of Ace’s expectation. However, Ace was stumped for words when he tilted the glass upside down, letting the red liquid slosh and splash outside the terrace overlooking the wide expanse of the garden.
Shaking his head, Ace lamented about how wasteful he was. If you don’t like it, why don’t you just give it to me?
He had been the one doing the talking the most; his throat felt parched. Yet, this demonic man didn’t even help him!
"By the way, why exactly are you here?" Ace finally asked the question everyone had been wanting to ask.
Even though the Veyron family was included in the VVIP guests at the Grand Socialite Ball, no one had responded to the invitation. However, no one thought this was strange. For the past several years, the number of times the Veyron family members had attended the banquet was less than three. And all of those three times, only one member of the family had come. It had always been Carlos Veyron, Kaelian’s third uncle.
So, Kaelian’s sudden appearance had brought much surprise to everyone else. Ace’s father even personally asked his son to inquire.
"There has been an assassination attempt." Kaelian’s words were said nonchalantly, as if he hadn’t just dropped something so heavy and serious.
Ace was almost alarmed and jumped at his words. His eyes turning into slits as he narrowed them, looking around them even more cautiously.
When he noticed nothing out of ordinary, he hissed. "Are you fucking serious?"
Kaelian nodded calmly.
His relaxed and cool-headedness made Ace frown and relieved at the same time. Despite the threat in his life, Kaelian was not concerned at all. He even had the audacity to show his face after the failed attempt. That only meant that Kaelian had already known whoever was behind his assassination.
"Who was it?" Ace restrained his anger with a groan.
Silence deepened between them as Kaelian didn’t reveal anything.
A moment later, their gazes collide on impact.
Kaelian then said after a beat, "Harrington family."
