Chapter 6: Stand on Ceremony

"Uncle, you’ve been staring. Do you have anything to share with me?"

Bard snapped out of his thoughts. He didn’t realize he had been in a daze, staring at Isabella as his mind returned to why he had to set a stage and pretend in front of his clueless niece.

Although he wouldn’t deny his ambitions and greed, he didn’t want Isabella to get hurt.

He announced that he wanted to find a husband for her. He let a rumor among his peers that he would share a portion of Isabella’s assets as part of her dowry to her husband. It was to make his intentions unclear and lead other people in a circle.

However, what everyone didn’t know was that he had made up his mind about whom he wanted her to marry.

He chose Edward Miller from the list of young men who could be her husband. He was young, talented, and his family had a progressing development in the business world. It wouldn’t be long enough for the Miller family to grow into a super-wealthy family.

With this, Bard could reconcile himself to giving Isabella up to Edward. In a way, it was his compensation for taking her inheritance by giving her a husband who had a promising future.

But this fell through because of his daughter.

Upon being reminded of what his daughter had done, Bard couldn’t keep the frown from coming back on his face.

He truly wished he could strangle his daughter and make her realize what a foolish mistake she had made!

How could she possibly fall for Edward and start an affair with him? She didn’t even consult him about whether he agreed or not about their relationship!

Bard gritted his teeth, seemingly unwilling to accept that his daughter had turned out to be so stupid. However, being watched by Isabella, he could only swallow his anger, and the irritation in his heart faded.

Since Isabella didn’t know anything, he should just go along with it. It’s best she didn’t know about Edward and Vanessa’s affair. He could also continue with his plan and not expend more effort into finding a new match for her.

But he had lost the moment to perfectly deliver his words. So, Bard sent a signal for his wife, Carla, to continue what he couldn’t.

Carla got his hint and skillfully drew Isabella’s attention. She leaned forward and placed a brocade box on the table, slid it to place it in front of Isabella, and said, "Isabella, I got this from my last trip. See if you like it?"

Isabella didn’t call their bluff or intention to distract her. Rather, she showed a pleasant smile on her lips and brought the brocade box to herself.

With a pop, the box opened and revealed a beautiful pearl necklace with a green emerald diamond pendant the size of a cherry and surrounded by 24-carat diamonds.

The necklace definitely took everyone’s breath away. Even Isabella couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at their sincerity. However, she remained untouched by their actions. Who knew if this necklace was bought with the money her father left behind? 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

But she didn’t rip off her disguise so soon.

"Wow!" Isabella exclaimed in delightful surprise. "Auntie, where did you buy this?"

"Do you like it?"

Isabella nodded her head, propping her eyeglasses before they could fall. "I like it!"

"Then, it’s yours."

As soon as these words fell, Vanessa leapt like a grasshopper in disbelief and cried out loud. "WHAT? WHY? That should’ve been mine!"

Carla’s gentle smile froze at her daughter’s outburst. However, who told her not to tell her beforehand?

Truth be told, the necklace was indeed Vanessa’s. It was intended to be given to her on her birthday in a few weeks’ time.

The necklace was a rare and unique jewelry piece. It was crafted by Aureve, a renowned French company that specialized in diamonds and gemstones. It was said that in order to get a piece of their collection, one had to make a reservation months before they were revealed. What’s more special about this company is that all of their buyers and collectors were members of the supreme high society.

Carla was lucky to get a reservation after trying for three whole years!

Vanessa had been crying about it for her birthday. And if she weren’t her daughter, Carla wouldn’t have bought it for her, but rather for herself.

Yet, before they could get their hands on that necklace, they had to give it up themselves!

This was a misfortune the mother and daughter pair never expected!

Of course, Vanessa couldn’t just give it up. How could she? She had already spread around her circle how her mother would gift her a piece crafted by Aureve. If she didn’t show that she got one, they would surely laugh at her.

With her scandalous behavior last night, how would she face the world now when even the only thing that could make her shine bright and erase the stain on her name slipped through her hands?

And so, Vanessa was outraged by her mother’s actions.

"You got that necklace for me? Why are you giving it to her?" Vanessa stood up to grab the necklace from Isabella’s hands.

However, before she could leave her chair, Carla immediately grabbed her and pulled her down. Pinching her daughter in the process and reprimanding her, "Don’t be rude. Who said that’s yours? I bought that for your older sister."

"She’s not even my older sister! She’s just a—"

"Enough!" Bard couldn’t take his daughter’s stupidity anymore. Why couldn’t she just understand their intentions? Besides, it’s just a necklace. He could give her a hundred more?

"Don’t listen to her, Isabella." Carla forced a gentle smile even as her heart was taking damage from just handing it over to her.

Isabella sneered inwardly. But she showed a wry but benevolent smile, "It’s fine. Let her take it. Vanessa and I never stood on ceremony about what’s mine."
