Chapter 8: Wisteria Compound

"Miss, where to?"

Isabella, who caused a lot of chaos, was now inside the family car. The driver assigned to her glanced at her through the rearview mirror with a bit of surprise in his eyes.

Normally, he wouldn’t even glance at her. With how ordinary Isabella looked and dressed, no one would usually take a second glance at her.

But today, something was different about her.

Right now, Isabella hadn’t shed her usual disguise. Her hair was still tied into a single braid, a dark frame sat atop her nose bridge, and freckles dotted her cheeks. Although she couldn’t be said to be ugly, still holding some sort of beauty, in comparison to the young misses and young masters in her circle, she was truly ordinary.

She even dressed in much more conservative clothes. A wide, loose pink dress with long sleeves that reached to her calves. She matched her outfit with boots that had thick soles.

However, what stole the attention from her usual strange and plain looks was the addition of a pearl necklace around her neck, which was worn atop her dress, as if she was afraid the collar of the dress would cover it up.

"Take me to Wisteria Compound."

The driver nodded, and he almost couldn’t take his eyes off her necklace. Then, he drove to the location Isabella told him to.

After almost half an hour, they stopped before tall, dark metal gates. They were stopped by the compound’s guard, who asked about their purpose for coming to that place.

The driver, having no idea why his young miss wanted to come here, turned to her.

The compound guard noticed this and repeated his question to her.

Isabella touched her necklace and said, "I would like to look at the houses and villas in the compound."

The guard wanted to refuse their entry, but he paused when he also noticed the necklace around her neck as she carelessly picked at the diamonds on the pendant. Although he didn’t have an eye for jewelry or its authenticity, the guard had stayed in that same compound for years. He knew who had money and who was pretending to have it.

In his eyes, Isabella might look tacky and ordinary. But she didn’t look like the latter, especially with how she was deliberately showing off her necklace. Her recklessness in handling it also added a touch to how she didn’t care about her necklace.

This made her appear like someone who didn’t care how much she spends on a daily.

In truth, the guard had been right. Isabella truly didn’t care about the necklace. It may have cost a fortune and a rare piece to others, but to her, it didn’t matter much compared to seeing how her Uncle Bard, Auntie Carla, and Vanessa croaked in paralysis when they handed it to her.

It had been a great entertainment for her.

The guard deliberated about his response before he said, "The miss can enter. But you and the car must stay outside."

He was unsure of Isabella’s identity and, thus, his response was more tactful. He didn’t have to offend her or break any protocols.

The driver’s brows curled inward. He protested against the idea. "How will she reach her destination? She can’t walk all the way over there, can she?"

Isabella stepped out of the car. She patted it and gazed at the driver. "It’s fine. I won’t take long, anyway. I just want to look around."

"How long will it take?" the driver asked.

"Hm... about an hour?"

"An hour?"

Isabella stared at him steadily. "Why? Is that too long?"

"That..." the driver paused for a second. Before long, he conceded. "Then, Miss, you have to return after an hour. I still have to send you back to the mansion."

Isabella nodded, not showing any strange expression on her face when the driver hesitated.

Soon, the compound guard let her in through the gate.

Once inside, Isabella’s eyes lost their brightness and were replaced with a deep ravine that seemed to suck souls within.

Over the years, she stayed with her uncle and his family, spending a lot of time with them. So, how was it possible that Isabella still couldn’t notice that she was being followed and watched?

That driver was not speaking out of his concern for her... He was just thinking of how he would report her actions if he couldn’t enter the compound.

The maids, servants, gardeners, drivers, and even the people around her who looked like a passerby, all of them were paid to watch her. To guard against her and see if she showed any strangeness that would ruin their plans.

However, inside this compound, none of those could enter.

The Wisteria Compound was an exclusive housing area where land, houses, and villas were not just a place where one could show off their wealth, but also announced authority of one’s own power and status. Even those who had the money wouldn’t be able to get a small house there.

Without a recommendation from a Wisteria house and villa owner or an acceptance by the Wisteria’s owner, one cannot simply buy their way to live inside the compound.

Out of the ten highest and wealthiest families, only three were able to enter and register their names.

"Miss, I’ll let you explore around the area." The compound guard stopped following her. "Once you get to the inner gate of the compound, you’ll find another guard there. Just tell him to—"

"To take me inside and register my visiting information." Isabella finished for him.

"You already know this?" The guard was surprised.

Isabella didn’t respond, only nodding once before walking further inside.

She knew that the outer gate where the guard had come from was just for screening people who had come to visit. Whoever entered the inner gate was the one who could truly enter the compound.

Of course, that wasn’t the only thing she knew about this place...

She knew a lot more than people know.
