Morning arrived quietly, bringing soft golden light filtering through the hospital window.
Harlow stirred, her lashes fluttering before she finally woke. A deep yawn escaped her lips as she stretched, her muscles still sore from yesterday’s chaos. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes with the back of her hand, blinking as she took in her surroundings.
She was a ward, alone. She had no idea when she slept off last night. One moment she had eaten with Alanis and the next, she had rested on his shoulders telling herself she would close her eyes a little and wake up once the doctors were done.
Her stomach twisted. Yesterday had been a nightmare, and she hated that she had passed out so easily. For the first time in a long while, she had slept like the dead.
Harlow smacked her head. Alanis had no other than to tell the nurses to find a room for her. He must hate her family for not being supportive. She sighed.
But isn’t that what she wants? His hate. She wanted him to hate her so that she could exact her revenge on him.
A frown settled on her face as she swung her legs off the bed. She needed to know if Charlotte’s surgery was successful.
She refused to think of what would happen if it wasn’t.
Tugging the oversized cardigan on her body tighter, she slipped out of the room. Harlow stared at the cardigan wondering where Alanis had got it from.
The hospital was eerily quiet.
Harlow’s steps echoed as she padded down the hallway, her fingers lightly trailing along the cold walls. There were no nurses bustling about, no doctors in sight, nothing but an empty, silent corridor.
It almost felt like she was walking through a ghost town. Just as she was about to step out of the corridor, the door creaked, and Alanis stepped out. His dark eyes met hers and for a moment, time froze as she stared at him
Harlow opened her mouth to speak but he beat her to it. "You’re awake." He said calmly, "I was just about to check on you."
"How’s grandma?" Harlow asked her heart racing wildly as she awaited the news she dreaded the most. The last thing she wanted was Alanis telling her Charlotte did not make it, she would never forgive herself for not being able to protect the one woman who actually loved her like her daughter, aside Ava.
Harlow’s eyes moistened a little as she waited for Alanis’s words. "She’s fine and has woken up." Her eyes went wide at his words. Charlotte was alive and well.
"Can I see her?"
"Is that a question?" Alanis grabbed her hands and pulled her in.
The room smelled of antiseptic and fresh linen. A few nurses moved around, checking the monitors and adjusting Charlotte’s IV drip.
Harlow’s heart clenched at the sight of the frail woman lying in bed, her silver hair fanned out against the pillows. She walked closely beside Alanis as she stared at Charlotte.
She sure has recovered so quickly, who knew after the heavy fall she’d be awake just fast?
They didn’t stand close to her since the nurses weren’t done caring for her. Charlotte’s eyes were on the young girl, her gaze lingering longer than usual.
But something was off.
Charlotte’s eyes which were usually filled with warmth and recognition, were distant.
When her gaze met Harlow’s, there was no familiarity, only quiet curiosity. Her dark eyes roamed around Harlow as she took in Harlow’s appearance, from her tousled hair to the oversized cardigan she wore, one that Alanis had picked for her.
"She’s lost her memory due to the fall, but the doctor said there was no major injury in the head. Just a few broken bones on her shoulders, arms, and legs." He said gently.
"For now, don’t expect her to understand anything happening." He added with a smile.
"Come I’ll introduce you." Alanis held Harlow’s hands in his. His large palm covered her small one as he carried her to Charlotte’s bed.
"Who is she?" Charlotte asked calmly staring at the girl. Her head hurts a lot but she managed to look and Harlow. For a second time first impression, Harlow was not looking good, especially with a dimly colored cardigan Alanis had picked for her.
She bit her lips, staring at the elderly woman, whose gaze wanted to judge, but was too weak to think at the moment. She had just awakened from an accident, now was really not the right time to do anything.
"What’s your name?" She mumbled, her voice inaudible. "What family are you from?"
"Harlow. Harlow Blackwood." Charlotte said nothing, she turned her head to Alanis instead gently.
"I supported you in marrying her?" She asked and Alanis chuckled.
"She’s my wife grandma, the woman I love." He smiled pulling Harlow close as he wrapped his arms around her shoulder. For someone so slender, his big arms covered her so well.
Charlotte smiled, welcome to the family my dear." She said gently, her voice quivering lightly as she drifted to sleep. Harlow smiled as she watched her. She moistened as she stared at the now sleeping Charlotte.
Harloe turned to Alanis, "How long will she be like this?" Harlow asked softly.
"The doctor said it wouldn’t take long. Maybe a month or two." He said.
"Rest now Grandma, I’ll arrange your return to the Villa." He leaned in, pressing his lips on her forehead. At the same time, Ava arrived at the hospital.
"Master Alanis, Miss Harlow." Behind her was Gus, he had been here earlier to deliver Alanis’s clothes and was now back with Ava.
"How is grandma?" Ava asked glancing at the sleeping woman on the bed.
"She’s fine." Harlow was the one to respond and she saw her maid sigh in relief.
"You’ll stay with her while I arrange for her return to the Villa," Alanis ordered the maid nodded. It was time to deal with certain dogs, he needed to put them in their place quickly.
