"You can’t do this, Alanis! Claudia is pregnant! She’ll lose her child if you send her to that boot camp!" Elisa cried out, her voice trembling but filled with fury.
She couldn’t believe this was happening.
Her daughter, her perfect, spoiled daughter, being sent to a place meant for newly recruited military men with very harsh discipline. What business does a pregnant woman have with them?
Unacceptable.
Alanis, who had been about to leave, suddenly stopped in his tracks.
Slowly, he turned.
His sharp, cold gaze locked onto Elisa.
"She’s pregnant?" he repeated, his voice eerily quiet. "And yet, she made me go through that punishment for nothing?" ƒгeewёbnovel.com
She had not lost the child, yet lied because she wanted to punish Harlow. Elisa swallowed hard, her palm getting clammy.
For the first time, she hesitated.
"S-She lost one child," she lied smoothly, regaining her composure. "Shockingly, the other one survived." They had already planned what to say, without evidence no one would believe Claudia didn’t lose a child.
Alanis smiled, the smile reaching his eyes this time. He was amused by their games, their lies, and deceitfulness.
"Brother, please... spare her!" George suddenly spoke, his voice thick with desperation. "I already lost one child before. Losing another would kill me!"
His voice cracked, he knew how to play his games very well. Here they were thinking they could all tackle this one man even if he was badly injured, but it seems they had all thought wrong. Maybe she should have listened to his mother and run away for the time being.
Claudia clenched her jaw, her nails digging into her palms.
She had never felt more ashamed in her life.
So much for all his big talk.
All the shouting, the threats.
Now he was practically begging like a pathetic little coward in front of his brother.
"I... I’ll take her punishment if that’s what you want," George choked out. "I’ll go to the boot camp instead. Just please... don’t hurt my wife."
Elisa, still shaking, rushed forward.
Her once-pristine dress was wrinkled, and her hair was disheveled. But she didn’t care.
With one sharp tug, she managed to pull Claudia out of the car.
"My daughter is not going anywhere," she spat. "Not while I’m still breathing." She concluded. To her, Claudia did not commit any crime. Besides, who’s the Hamiltons to them? She will make Alanis fall to his feet today and apologize to Claudia. Enough was truly enough.
In all, Alanis smiled. He was amused by this woman’s boldness.
At that moment, the grand doors of the Villa swung open with Harlow stepping out. Her heels clicked against the concrete floor as she took in the scene before her. This time, she supported anything Alanis was doing to these people. They deserve to be punished a thousand times and more.
Behind her, Garth followed closely, her face carefully unreadable. She had tried to coax this girl into begging Alanis but Harlow just seems so smart and as evil as they are. She wasn’t always like this, she had no idea how Harlow changed overnight.
A maid hurried over, whispering something to Harlow before pressing a thick folder into her hands.
"Madam, Ava asked me to give this to you. She said you’d know what to do with it."
Harlow took the file, flipping through the pages, she smiled when she saw Claudia’s pregnancy report, but she didn’t go further to the last page as she thought whatever was in there wasn’t important. If only she did, she would have seen Claudia’s report about being the daughter of someone else.
Garth’s sharp eyes darted toward it, trying to catch a glimpse of whatever it contained. But she couldn’t read anything because of her poor eyesight. If only she was with her glasses. She looked around, where was the stupid Jane when she needed her the most.
Harlow was still going through the file when Claudia suddenly let out a dramatic wail, clutching her stomach.
"Alanis, how could you do this to a pregnant woman?!" she shrieked. "What if I lose my child?!" The maids and everyone around except her accomplices frowned at her. The boldness to talk after almost killing Charlotte last night.
And to make matters worse, no one knew the state of the older woman because their master has refused to say anything. He had only just arrived with these men to punish George and Claudia. This time, they were not in support of Claudia.
Claudia’s body swayed, as if on the verge of collapsing, and George immediately caught her, holding her tightly.
Alanis didn’t move.
Didn’t flinch.
Didn’t even blink.
He turned a blind eye to her dramatic gestures.
Fine. If playing weak didn’t work, she’d try something else. She thought.
"Yes, I must have hurt Grandma last night," she admitted, lifting her chin defiantly. "But she deserved it." She said nonchalantly.
"She refused to get out of my way, even when I begged her. What else was I supposed to do?!"
Her gaze swept over everyone, daring them to challenge her.
"But does that really mean you have to send me away?!"
Then she scoffed.
"No." She answers her question.
"You faked your child’s loss and made your boyfriend punish my husband. You pushed Grandma down the stairs willingly because you wanted to steal this report from me. Yet you stand there and act like you’re right?"
Claudia’s smirk flattered and only there did she see the document in Harlow’s hands. Her eyes turned wide in horror.
No! No! Harlow cannot know she’s not a true Blackwood, if she finds out, then Claudia is doomed for life. Even the Hamiltons will never accept her when they find out who her father is.
She opened her mouth to speak but before she could, "What nonsense are you talking about Harlow? You better stay quiet and let the men figure things out." George said immediately.
He didn’t even get a chance to process his words before...
CRACK...
Alanis’s fist slammed into George’s face.
A sickening thud echoed through the yard as George staggered back, losing his grip on Claudia.
His body hit the ground hard, his back slamming against the pavement.
"Speak that way to my wife again," Alanis said, his voice dark and low, "and I’ll make sure you lose every last one of your teeth."
George groaned, spitting blood onto the stone path.
His face twisted with rage and humiliation.
"This is all your fault, Harlow! You—"
Elisa wasn’t done speaking as usual when Harlow cut her. "When will you ever hold Claudia responsible for her actions?" Harlow cut her off sharply.
Her eyes were bright with fury, her voice unwavering.
"Your daughter not only faked her pregnancy, but she nearly killed Charlotte Hamilton."
Elisa paled.
"W... Whatever punishment you have in mind, George already said he would take the punishment for Claudia."
"I never said a thing like that." George denied it immediately, shocking the woman and everyone before him.
Alanis on the other hand, chuckled darkly.
