Chapter 121: Chapter 121: Don’t Be Afraid, I’m Here

Chloe Preston nodded.

As she ate, the image of Rosalind Rowan’s gaze from earlier flashed in her mind, and she couldn’t help but shiver.

「 」

In the afternoon, the sky grew overcast. A torrential downpour fell over Kryton, accompanied by howling winds and roaring thunder.

「Rowan Villa.」

Jane Zane had just returned joyfully from an auction, dressed in couture and adorned with gleaming jewelry, looking utterly regal and noble. She lifted her gaze and glanced around casually. "Has Rosalind returned?"

Just as she finished speaking, a servant came rushing down from upstairs. "Madam, thank goodness you’re back!"

Jane grew displeased. "What’s all the fuss? What happened?"

The servant spoke urgently, "Madam, for some reason, ever since the young lady returned, she’s been in her room throwing things and even pulling her own hair!"

"Now she’s exhausted from all the throwing. She’s curled up under the covers and has been crying nonstop!"

"What did you say?!" Jane’s expression changed dramatically.

"We tried to persuade her for a long time, but the young lady just keeps crying," the servant said. "Please, you have to go up and see her!"

Upstairs, the crystal chandelier in the bedroom glittered brightly. On the large bed, Rosalind Rowan was curled up under the covers, weeping pitifully.

CLICK—

The door was suddenly thrown open. Jane Zane rushed in with a worried expression, her hair a mess. "Rosalind, Rosalind, what’s wrong with you?"

Jane walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, reaching for the covers, but they wouldn’t budge. Listening to her daughter’s cries, Jane’s heart twisted in pain. "Rosalind, don’t scare Mama. What happened? Tell Mama, and I’ll fix it for you."

"Rosalind, Mama’s begging you, please stop crying, will you?" As she listened to her daughter sob, Jane pursed her lips tightly and couldn’t stop her own tears from falling.

In the next second, Rosalind yanked the blanket aside. Her hair was a mess and her face was streaked with tears as she was wracked with sobs. She reached out and threw her arms around Jane’s neck, holding her tight. "Mama!"

Jane hugged her back, gently patting her back to soothe her. "Good girl, Rosalind, don’t cry. Mama’s here."

"Tell Mama, did someone bully you?"

Rosalind continued to cry. "Mama, Chloe Preston is about to join the Xavier Family! I’ll never have the chance to become Donovan’s wife!"

"Mama, I don’t care! I want to marry Donovan!"

Jane spoke softly, "Of course, you two will get married. You’ve had a marriage arrangement since you were children. You’re his fiancée."

"Besides, the Xavier Family hates that Quinn girl. With Grandpa Xavier around, there’s no way she can get into the Xavier Family!"

Rosalind wiped her tears, her eyes bloodshot as she choked out, "It’s useless. Donovan took her to see Luna Kane yesterday. With that old hag’s intervention, the Xavier Family will definitely accept her!"

"Mama, you’re a liar! You said you’d get rid of Chloe Preston, but you still haven’t done it!"

"Her belly is getting bigger by the day! What am I going to do?"

Jane stroked her daughter’s disheveled hair, her brow furrowed. "This... I’m not sure what happened either."

"Logically, the people Mr. Walden sent should’ve taken care of her by now!"

"Don’t worry, Rosalind. Mama will call and ask about it later. Rest assured, as long as I’m here, I’ll make sure you become Mrs. Xavier!"

"Mama!" Rosalind threw herself into her mother’s arms again, crying uncontrollably as her tears soaked the expensive fabric of Jane’s gown.

Jane wiped the tears from her daughter’s face. "Don’t cry, Rosalind. Mama will always have your back."

After a while, Rosalind fell asleep, though tears still lingered at the corners of her eyes—a truly pitiful sight. Jane tucked her in, then walked to the floor-to-ceiling window with her phone and dialed a number.

Within seconds, the call connected. A deep voice laced with a smile answered, "Hello, Jane. What’s up?"

Jane’s voice was soft and gentle. "Julian, let’s meet."

「 」

At dusk, the rain had stopped, but the wind continued to blow relentlessly. The ground was covered with puddles, and the air was slightly chilled. A black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up, stopping at the gate of the old Xavier estate.

The car door opened, and Donovan Xavier stepped out. His long legs were clad in an austere black suit that gave him a cold, detached air, and his handsome face radiated nobility.

A servant approached, her expression both respectful and pleased. "Young Master, what brings you back all of a sudden?"

Donovan didn’t answer her, instead extending a hand to carefully help the woman out of the car. "Slowly."

Chloe Preston emerged from the car. Her face was radiant, and she was dressed in an off-white silk qipao paired with pearl earrings, looking exquisitely demure and elegant.

When the servant saw her, her smile froze and her expression changed instantly.

Donovan took Chloe’s hand and started leading her inside.

Chloe paused for a moment, hesitating. "Maybe we should come back another day?"

Donovan turned his head to look at her and gently squeezed her fingertips, comforting her in a warm voice. "It’s okay. Don’t be afraid. I’ll handle everything."

Chloe nodded.

As they reached the entrance, the servant stepped forward, raising her hands to block them.

Donovan’s handsome face darkened. With a superior air, he asked, "Aren’t you bold, daring to block my way?"

Intimidated by his commanding presence, the servant trembled slightly. "Young Master, I... I wouldn’t dare stop you, of course. But Miss Quinn is not allowed inside."

"Young Master, the Old Master has ordered that Miss Quinn is to never set foot inside the Xavier Family’s doors for the rest of her life."

Chloe’s eyelashes fluttered. She pressed her lips together and looked at Donovan. "Maybe we should just forget it."

Donovan lifted his gaze to the servant, his eyes piercing and his voice chillingly cold. "Do you still want to make a living in Kryton?"

The words carried an unmistakable threat. The servant was caught in a dilemma. After all, if she offended the Old Master, she would surely face dire consequences.

"Big Brother!"

A clear, pleasant female voice rang out from ahead. Isla Xavier came running over with Caleb Xavier by her side. His hair was graying and his face seemed to have aged considerably. He leaned on a dragon-head cane, looking severe and sharp.

Chloe quietly drew in a sharp breath.
