Vera Xavier paid no mind to the chatter, acting as if she hadn’t heard a thing. They were just a bunch of kids who had been stirred up by someone else; she couldn’t be bothered to argue with them and simply went about her business.

The class monitor, Shane Caldwell, walked up to Vera Xavier with a cold expression. "What are you doing back here?"

Shane Caldwell was the monitor for Class Four. He was an excellent student, consistently ranking in the top three of the entire school. He was also handsome enough to be considered the school’s heartthrob, and rumor had it he came from a very wealthy family. The line of girls who had a crush on him was a mile long.

In her previous life, Vera Xavier hadn’t had much interaction with him. All she knew was that he had a cold demeanor and wasn’t easy to talk to. So, she just gave a small shrug and smiled. "Isn’t it obvious? I’m back to study."

Shane Caldwell was taken aback by her smile. As he recalled, she had always kept her head down, never looking anyone in the eye. That, combined with her filthy clothes, meant no one had ever really paid her any attention.

But now, as she looked up at him with a faint smile, he realized her face was even prettier than that of the school beauty, Cecilia Jensen. He was momentarily dazed, and the lecture he’d been about to give her morphed into something else entirely: "Since you’re back to study, then study hard. Don’t drag our class down!"

Vera Xavier nodded. "Don’t worry, Class Monitor. I definitely won’t disgrace our class again."

Before Shane Caldwell could respond, a girl sitting in front of Vera Xavier sneered, "Is talking big in fashion these days? With grades like hers, it’s a miracle she doesn’t score a zero on every test, and she still has the nerve to talk about not disgracing our class?"

Her words immediately drew a response from the entire class. A barrage of insults filled the air, with some students even shouting for Vera Xavier to get out of Class Four.

Cara Preston happened to arrive at school just then. She immediately put on a show of defending Vera Xavier, crying out, "You can’t bully my sister! And you definitely can’t hit her!"

If she hadn’t mentioned hitting, it might have been fine. But the moment she did, the class erupted. Students clenched their fists and yelled about beating Vera Xavier up, as if she had committed some unforgivable crime.

A triumphant glint flashed in Cara Preston’s eyes. Yet, as the students began to close in, she ducked directly behind Vera Xavier.

Vera Xavier scoffed inwardly at this behavior. With a single sentence, she made the advancing students freeze. "Anyone eighteen or older is a legal adult and must bear full criminal responsibility for their actions. You can hit me, sure. But you’d better be prepared for criminal detention or jail time."

"Who do you think you’re scaring!" someone shouted.

Shane Caldwell stepped in front of Vera Xavier and shouted at the other students, "What do you all think you’re doing? Get back to your seats!"

Elise Langdon, who was good friends with Cara Preston, shouted, "Class Monitor, Vera Xavier’s grades are terrible! She’s only back to drag down our class average! We don’t want to be her classmate!"

This declaration immediately resonated with the entire class, and they all became incensed.

Shane Caldwell’s brow furrowed. The students were too worked up; he couldn’t control the situation.
