Chapter 97: Sea of Despair

Three hours passed.

Dungeon hallway on floor 66.

Milenia’s eyes opened after three hours had passed since their battle with the Brightpawn monsters. She saw herself lying in the dungeon hallway, with cold and damp black walls in front of her.

Milenia turned to her right and left, clearly seeing Agares checking his personal system. Not only that, Aoi was sleeping soundly at her feet.

"Agares?" Milenia asked.

Agares turned while closing his personal system panel. His eyes locked on Milenia —the woman had woken up from her fainting caused by deep trauma.

Milenia complained of a headache just as she woke up.

"What happened?"

"You fainted because your trauma came back."

"My trauma?"

"But you don’t need to worry. Everything’s okay."

The man nodded. He clearly said that Milenia still wasn’t able to fully overcome the trauma in her heart.

But slowly, everything would be okay over time. That was because Agares was committed to helping Milenia heal.

He stood up and walked closer to Milenia, helping her stand. Not only that, Agares also came and woke Aoi, who had been sleeping undisturbed. The three of them gathered again.

Before continuing their journey to the next room, Agares gave lunch to Milenia to restore her stamina. Milenia nodded, accepting the food and eating it slowly.

"So, what will we fight next?" Milenia asked.

"A mini boss monster — the Solar Hofling Minotaur. A level 7 monster with light affinity. Its main strength is in the swing of its spiked mace."

"Alright."

"Before we fight it, we should focus on recovering first," Agares replied.

"You don’t need to help me, Milenia. I can fight it."

"I don’t want you to struggle."

Milenia stayed silent while chewing on her sandwich, nodding in response. She didn’t say she wouldn’t help Agares, but she clearly meant she would try to control her fear.

By controlling her fear, the trauma in her heart might start to fade. That’s what Milenia thought.

After she finished her sandwich, Agares invited Milenia and the others to leave the dungeon hallway. They agreed.

Aoi jumped back onto Agares’ shoulder, standing there to keep him company. Milenia walked beside Agares while asking how he had defeated the monster earlier.

"Because you gave damage to them earlier, you also got the EXP points you needed," Agares said.

"Even though it wasn’t much, because EXP is calculated based on your damage percentage."

"I understand."

Agares smiled. He focused forward again until he stopped at a three-way split. Milenia stopped too, unsure which hallway led to the mini boss room.

But she saw Agares step confidently into the middle path. That shocked and surprised her.

"Wait? Is that the right way?" Milenia asked. Agares turned and cleared his throat before responding.

"Yes. This is the right way."

"How are you sure?"

"I have smart navigation. I trust it more than intuition," Agares explained.

Milenia stayed quiet. If what Agares said about the room was true, then he clearly had the best navigation system. That would really help Agares avoid traps and wrong paths.

She continued walking behind Agares as they entered the middle hallway leading directly to the mini boss room, Solar Hofling.

The longer they walked, the closer they got to the mini boss room. From a distance, they could even hear Solar Hofling roaring loudly without stopping.

Milenia shivered in fear, not knowing how to react. But one thing she was sure of — she was in Agares’ hands. She believed Agares would protect her.

What am I thinking? I keep trying to hide behind Agares instead of relying on my own strength?

No. This isn’t what I want!

I believe I can prove that I can help them too.

Arriving at the mini boss room, Milenia’s steps stopped as past memories suddenly returned. What shocked her even more was the mini boss in front of them.

It was the same monster from when her friends were killed.

Milenia dropped to her knees, her eyes wide in shock. Aoi turned after hearing the noise behind them —and was startled to see Milenia sitting with a pale, terrified face.

"Agares... what’s wrong with Milenia?" Aoi asked. Agares instinctively turned his head.

He didn’t move forward but instead stepped closer to Milenia. Both of Agares’ hands tried to hold Milenia’s hands tightly, trying to pull her out of her flashbacks.

In Milenia’s subconscious, her body sank into a black ocean —without light, without sound, without feeling.

No one tried to reach her. The deeper she sank, the stronger the memories tortured her body and mind.

When Milenia felt no one would save her, someone appeared from the sky and dived into the water. Milenia’s eyes slowly opened and saw the man coming, tightly holding her hand.

His touch felt warm and gentle, wrapping her in comfort and human warmth. From that touch, a bright light lit up the dark sea.

Milenia’s eyes widened when she saw that the one who came to save her was Agares.

He didn’t just give her the warmth she needed, but also comfort and a way out from the trauma she had lived with all this time.

Her consciousness returned, and her blurred vision started to focus. She saw Agares fighting the mini boss Solar Hofling. In front of her, only Aoi was standing to protect her.

Milenia smiled. Seeing the small, cute white fox protecting her made her feel moved to use her power.

I have to fight! That way, I won’t lose the light I need!

She stood up from where she sat, her hand reaching out to grab her magic staff. Aoi turned instinctively and felt happy that Milenia had recovered.

"I’m glad you’re feeling better, Milenia."

"Step back, Aoi. Let me protect you both today!" Milenia said firmly.

"Mage Skill: Niflheim!"

Milenia raised her staff forward, summoning a large blue magic rune in the sky. Agares and the mini boss stopped fighting.

The monster looked up, staring at the magic rune. Agares glanced sideways, seeing Milenia standing and joining the fight.

"Milenia," Agares called.

He quickly leaped backward and landed near Milenia. The serious look on Milenia’s face showed that she didn’t want to be interrupted.

"This is payback for killing my friends!"

"This is your punishment for killing my pet!"

"Today! You’ll freeze to death right here!" Milenia shouted.

"HYAAAA!"

Milenia poured a huge amount of magic energy into the rune. From the rune, cold air blew downward, freezing the mini boss’ body.

Not just the monster, but also the objects around it were frozen. The freezing radius reached 50 meters from the monster.

Agares stabbed his sword into the ground to form a protective spell. Aoi jumped and climbed onto Agares’ shoulder.

"I didn’t know her power was that terrifying."

"I just found out myself," Agares said.

Agares looked forward and saw the mini boss frozen, struggling to break free. That was a good thing for him, especially since the monster’s HP kept dropping over time.

"But it looks like she wants to settle her old grudge with that monster here," Agares said.

"Do we need to help her, Master?"

"No. She alone is enough to beat that monster."
