Chapter 158: 158- A War Whisper

Alex looked into his tray. There was a slice of pie, with jam-like syrup slowly dripping from its side.Next to it sat a roasted chicken leg, still glistening with juice from the coals. He slid the meat toward Hati, who eagerly devoured it, tail wagging. Then Alex looked at the rest—a half-fried egg, and a thick slice of toasted bread. He sprinkled some pepper and salt on top and dug in with fork and knife. He washed it down with a mug of steaming hot coffee. It hit the spot.

In Selene’s tray, the meal was a little different. She had four pancakes, topped with sweet apple cubes, dripping in thick syrup.Beside it was a slice of the same pie Alex had, and a cup of steaming mocha. She took a bite of pancake with her fork, then a bite of pie, and sipped from the mocha. She giggled like a little girl, enjoying every bit of her food.Alex just smiled, watching her in silence.

After finishing breakfast, they left the cafeteria and wandered around the outer wall. The air around them had changed—tense, heavy with anticipation.Soldiers stood more rigid than before.Archers checked their quivers, and ice lancers reviewed formation positions. The wall was no longer just a defense—it was a war front in waiting.

As night fell, snuffing away the last rays of light, warm yellow glows burned steadily from the embedded light stones.Alex and Selene made their way toward the cafeteria for dinner. They were quietly eating when Marshal Sebeth arrived and sat down across from them, a mischievous smile tugging at her lips.

Selene rolled her eyes and said in a warning tone,"Aunty, don’t."Sebeth raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence."What are you talking about, Sel?"

Alex glanced between the two of them, confused.Selene kept glaring, but Sebeth cheerfully ignored her and focused on the food on her plate.

They ate in silence for a few moments, until suddenly, Sebeth’s smile faded. She set down her fork and looked at both of them with serious eyes. After a moment of contemplation, she leaned in and whispered,"War is coming. That dragon you encountered... she’s going to attack soon. Or so we believe."

Selene’s eyes widened. Her fork fell to her plate with a sharp clank."War?" she whispered, shocked.

Sebeth nodded."Yes. Monsters are gathering—somewhere in the outskirts. I suspect it’s near the mountain you mentioned."

Alex furrowed his brow."Didn’t the monsters retreat?" he asked quietly.

Sebeth nodded again."They did. But it wasn’t because they were losing. If that Sage-level monster had truly attacked... we wouldn’t have been able to defend the wall."

Both Alex and Selene froze, their hands trembling slightly as the memory of the monster’s aura returned to them.Alex exhaled slowly, composing himself."Will you really not be able to stop her?"

Sebeth shook her head."No. She’s an SS-rank monster. What we call a ’Sage’... but monsters at that level are stronger than us."She paused, her expression tightening with frustration, then whispered,"Even if we humans understand the laws and nature of our Elements better, monsters are naturally aligned with them. It makes them stronger, more primal... more complete."

Alex nodded grimly. He knew.Monsters were stronger than humans.

Sebeth smiled."Don’t worry. We can still stop that monster. We have five Pseudo Saints here—if we combine our attacks, we’ll be able to take it down."

Alex and Selene nodded, but the anxiety within them didn’t waver—it only grew stronger.

After finishing their dinner, they returned to their bunkers.Alex collapsed onto his bed, muttering,"War, huh..."

In another similar room, Selene lay on her bed, restless. She turned from one side to the other, unable to shake the fear gnawing at her thoughts. After struggling in silence for a while, she left her room and quietly crossed the corridor. frёeweɓηovel_coɱ

Knock knock.

Alex opened the door to find Selene standing in her soft, sky-blue pajamas.Raising an eyebrow, he asked,"What happened?"

Selene didn’t reply. Instead, she stepped inside and gently moved Alex aside with her hand.Confused, Alex watched as she walked straight to his bed and laid down on it.She turned sideways, facing him, and said,"I couldn’t sleep... so I came here to talk."

Alex sighed, closed the door behind her, and sat on the floor, his back leaning against the bed.Selene lay on her side, the curve of her waist and hip forming a graceful silhouette as her gaze lingered on Alex’s silky, long white hair—shimmering slightly with faint purple and red streaks.

Her hand itched.I want to touch them...

Her fingers moved on their own and gently ran through his hair.Alex flinched slightly at first, but then relaxed. She continued stroking his hair for a while.

Alex leaned his head back on the bed frame, eyes fixed on the ceiling. In a quiet voice, Selene spoke,"My father’s on the Easternmost Frontlines. I haven’t seen him in almost five years."

She kept caressing his hair as she continued, her voice growing softer,"I miss him..."Her eyes became glossy.

Alex’s voice came gently from below,"Don’t worry. You’ll meet him. Or better yet—you’ll grow strong enough to go see him yourself."

Selene smiled, her voice barely a whisper,"You’re right... I need to get stronger."

Silence settled over the room.A peaceful stillness.

In the corner, Hati raised his head and looked at the two—quiet, calm, and close—before laying it back down.

Selene’s hand slowed... and eventually stopped as she drifted into sleep. After a little while, Alex slowly moved away and stood up, careful not to disturb her.He looked at Selene, sleeping peacefully.Gently, he pulled the bedsheet up around her and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

Then he sat down opposite her, leaning back against the cold wall. She looked so calm, so serene. For the first time in a long while, the scars in his heart seemed to fade...The constant restlessness in his mind finally found a pause—an anchor of peace. With a faint smile on his lips, he too drifted into sleep.

As the morning broke, washing away the darkness, a soft light peeked into the dimly lit room.Selene’s pale blue eyes fluttered open... and landed on the handsome face right in front of her.She smiled instinctively—until realization struck her.

Her eyes widened as she scrambled upright in the bed.A quick glance confirmed her clothes were untouched—not that she truly doubted it, but the thought had crossed her mind. She looked from the bed to Alex, who was still sleeping soundly against the wall.A wave of embarrassment hit her... followed immediately by a fluttering warmth in her chest. She crept quietly out of the room and returned to her own.

As soon as the door closed behind her, she fell face-first into her pillow and screamed. After calming down a little, she sat up and ran her hands through her hair, brushing it back from her face. She muttered with a bashful smile,"I think I’ll cherish this memory..."Then she dove into the pillow again, giggling softly.

Back in Alex’s room, Hati—who had been ignored entirely through all of it—rolled his eyes. With a huff, he stood up and padded back to his bed. After turning around a few times, he curled up and closed his eyes, muttering in his own wolfish way.
