The Heiress Spoiled by Four Brothers and One Devilish CEO-Chapter 241 The Hidden Threat in the Shadows
Tristan hung up the phone without hesitation and turned to Megan. "That guy’s a real snake—talks smack about me the minute your back’s turned. He may look soft and harmless, like someone all the aunties would love, but don’t let that fool you."
Megan nodded obediently but wrinkled her nose. "Yuck, you’ve smoked at least five cigarettes, haven’t you?"
Tristan gently tapped her nose. "You’ve got a dog’s nose for smell. I’m heading for a shower now."
As he disappeared into the bathroom, Megan stared at the door for a while, her thoughts drifting.
Something had felt off with Tristan lately.
Nathaniel had been handed over to military court. The charges were severe enough that he was sentenced to death and stripped of all political rights for life. The execution was scheduled for the tenth day of the new lunar year.
With the big villain finally punished, you’d think Tristan would be relieved—but instead, he seemed weighed down.
What annoyed her most was his silence. He never opened up to her about it.
Not long after, Tristan came out in a bathrobe, his damp hair still dripping as he rubbed it dry with a towel.
"What is it? You look kind of down," he asked, noticing her expression.
She leaned into him and pouted. "I just feel like you’ve been super tense lately, and you’re not saying a word about what’s going on."
Tristan set the towel on the nightstand and wrapped his arms around her. "Since my identity as King got exposed, I’ve been on edge. And with you pregnant, I’ve gotta stay on high alert. You feeling sleepy yet?"
Megan raised an eyebrow, her smile sly. "You mean regular sleepy or... the other kind of sleepy?"
Chuckling, Tristan muttered, "Megan, there’s so much chaos going on in that little head of yours."
She scoffed and slid under the blanket, turning her back to him. "I do not. Karl calling you a war dog? Makes total sense now."
Tristan slipped in beside her and placed a hand over her belly. "If the baby ever calls me a dog, then fine, guess I am. But look, not a peep from them right now."
Megan couldn’t help but laugh at how shameless he was. "They’re not even born yet—how can they talk? Wait till they grow up, they’ll totally call you dog-dad."
She rambled on, but Tristan’s smile dimmed. Deep down, he wanted nothing more than to see his child come into the world, to hold them as they slept on his chest, to tell them the sweetest stories, hear them call him dad. He longed to be there through every step—school, travels, all the messy beauty of life.
He wanted to spend quiet afternoons with Megan, watching seasons pass, growing old together till their hair turned white.
But now, all of that just felt so far away.
He hugged her tighter. "Megan, I love you." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
She stopped rambling and looked back at him. "Tristan, I love you too."
Covering the sadness in his eyes with a smile, he said, "Hey, I installed surveillance at the Lewis place. Wanna take a look?"
Megan blinked and turned toward him, her belly bump between them. "Since when were you into this kind of thing?"
"It’s been a while."
She pinched his chin, teasing, "Tell me the truth, is it because you’ve got a thing for Mrs. Hall, the grocery queen?"
Tristan kissed her cheek. "Not just her. Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Clark—they’re all goddesses. Wouldn’t miss a thing."Megan didn’t buy his nonsense one bit. Tristan never did anything for nothing—there had to be a reason behind it.
She climbed out of bed, crawled over to grab the laptop from the desk, then slid back under the covers. She opened it up and hacked into the security system of the Lewis family mansion.
She looked over at him. "Okay, spill it. Who exactly are you keeping tabs on?"
Tristan leaned against the headboard. "You’ll see in a sec."
Multiple surveillance feeds popped up on the screen.
After a few minutes, Megan yawned. "Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Wang are all back in their rooms. Who else are you expecting to show up?"
"The third floor."
Megan froze. She turned her head to look at him, uncertainty and suspicion clouding her gaze.
"There she is."
Snapping back to the screen, Megan watched as a door creaked open and someone peeked out cautiously. After checking the hallway, the figure stepped out.
She moved quietly, staying close to the wall, walking with extra care.
Megan switched to a different camera view. The girl was moving quickly downstairs, weaving her way to the first floor.
She glanced around nervously, clearly trying not to be seen.
Right then, Mrs. Hall stepped out and caught her on the spot.
"Miss Irwin, just let us know if you need anything," said Mrs. Hall pleasantly.
Michelle gave a small nod. "I was just feeling a bit thirsty. The water in my room ran out."
Mrs. Hall smiled. "I’ll get you a warm glass of water."
"Thank you, Mrs. Hall."
"You’re so sweet. Just like our current young lady—kind to us maids. Not like that fake one before." Mrs. Hall chuckled.
Michelle’s smile was faint. She took the water, finished it, and handed the glass back. "Thanks."
"Not at all, Miss Irwin. You’ll soon be the second young madam of this house. Let us know if there’s anything you need."
Michelle smiled brightly and turned to head back upstairs.
Tristan lifted his chin. "What do you think?"
Megan caught on quick. "You think there’s something off about her?"
"You didn’t notice how sneaky she was acting? Like who moves around like a thief unless they’ve got something to hide? And how well she knows that house—it’s too natural, like she’s been there longer than she claims."
Now that he mentioned it, Megan thought it was odd too. She hesitated before speaking. "You think she’s one of Nathaniel’s people?"
Tristan shrugged. "Can’t say for sure, but tension’s high right now. Better safe than sorry. Could be she just has a good memory. I did run a background check—nothing major. Her dad’s been in debt for a couple years, and Jason helped him pay it off. That’s when their relationship started heating up."
Megan’s brows knitted together. "Jason’s head over heels right now. If there’s really something fishy with Michelle, he’s gonna get hurt bad."
"True, but if there’s trouble, he has to face it."
Megan stayed quiet for a moment, knowing this wasn’t something to be taken lightly. "Should we give Jason a heads-up?"
Tristan shook his head. "Let’s not startle the snake. If she’s actually a plant, they’ll just send someone else when she’s exposed. And if she’s not, we’re just ruining something good."
Megan watched Michelle re-enter her room on the screen, her heart sinking a little.
With two pregnant women in the house, they really couldn’t afford to take any chances.
Tristan closed the laptop and set it on the table. He turned to her, voice calm but firm. "We’ll go with the flow, but stay ready for anything."
