Chapter 148: Wedding day (2)

"You look lovely, Lady Hazel."

"Thank you, Mary. Can you please hand my mother something to wipe her eyes before she starts to cry ?" Hazel said, looking at her weeping mother through the mirror. "You’ve been holding back tears since you’ve arrived."

"My oldest is getting married. How can I not cry? Thank you," Renee said, accepting the cloth from Mary. "Then Helena claims she will soon be getting married. My home will be empty."

’Why did you say it as if you do not believe I will get married soon? I found a man who wishes to take me as his wife. I am only waiting for Hazel’s moment to pass to introduce him and then get married," said Helena.

Helena had already received a soft proposal as she was told of his plans to marry her. It happened close to Hazel’s wedding so not to take the shine from Hazel, Helena was patiently waiting.

It did not upset Helena that she was getting married a little later than her peers. After no longer turning to Tabitha to find a good man, Helena met someone at a party she attended with her parents and fell in love.

This time, she had fallen in love with the man for the way he treated her and not because of his title. The only issue with the man Helena came to love was him living closer to the countryside so after they wed, she would need to leave Lockwood.

"I don’t know if I want you to get married soon. I will hardly see the two of you. You must write to me often and invite me to dinners a few times a month," Renee pleaded as she could not go long periods without her daughters.

They had always been near and now letting them go was hard.

"I will write to you every day," Hazel promised.

"I won’t. Perhaps three to four times a week," said Helena. Their mother would miss them now, but it wouldn’t be long before she would get back to celebrating they were out of the mansion. Too many letters would eventually become a bother.

"You rotten child," Renee said, not meaning it.

"What? Do you wish to have me repeat simple things I say throughout the day? I don’t see you writing to grandmother every day. Why aren’t many of our relatives coming?" Helena questioned, finding it to be odd.

Hazel cleared her throat. "Their invitations might have gotten lost at some point."

Helena narrowed her eyes, suspicious of Hazel’s answer. "You didn’t invite them. Our next family dinner should be interesting."

"I didn’t like the letters they were sending me. Already asking me for something. I’ve never received letters from those relatives not even during my birthday so why now should I accept them? The relatives I care for are here," Hazel answered.

As the days drew closer for her to get married, Hazel witnessed how people she knew started to change. Hazel had to slowly distance herself from them which was easy since those people didn’t get to visit the palace often.

Hazel was in luck that Linda had stayed the same during this time and continued to visit with Grant.

"It is nearing time for us to go down. I should have sent someone to check on Tobias," Hazel said, wanting to know if he was as nervous as she was.

"I am sure the prince is fine. You will get to see him shortly so don’t worry about what he is doing now," Renee said to calm Hazel’s nerves. She smiled as it was good to see the difference in how Hazel acted when it came to Tobias.

It was evident that Hazel had fallen in love with the prince so there was nothing to worry about the marriage in Renee’s eyes.

"Right. I just need to sit and have a glass of water before I go down," Hazel said, picking up a dress to help her walk.

Mary moved quickly to get Hazel her third glass of water.

Hazel took a seat on an empty chair as her dress took up too much room for her to sit between her mother and sister. "I cannot believe that I will soon be named queen. Though I’ve prepared for months, it is still hard to fathom now that the time is here."

Two days after the wedding, Jeffrey would step down as king and give the title to Tobias. Therefore Hazel only had two days of enjoying her honeymoon with Tobias before they would be busy again.

"I am excited for you because the queen will not be able to brush you to the side anymore. I wonder what she feels now seeing that her crown will be gone," said Helena. She would love to be a fly on the wall to see how Tabitha was in private.

"She will still be the mother of the king and hold some power in the palace. Nothing will change other than me becoming queen," said Hazel.

"Shouldn’t the queen be here?" Renee asked, finding it odd Tabitha had not visited Hazel all morning. It was a bit rude that the queen wouldn’t come to greet Hazel during this time. "As mothers, we should lead by example and put any bad feelings to the side for a day like this. Should she bother you, do not always turn blind to it."

Renee didn’t like learning how Tabitha treated Hazel during the early days of her time in the palace. Renee was classy but should she be granted a few minutes alone with the queen, she would gladly give the woman a good beating.

Queens were not exempt from a good beating when they were troubling anyone’s daughter.

"It’s fine that she is not present. We would be forcing smiles if she were came here," Hazel said, not caring to have Tabitha around. The day was going good with not having to see Tabitha and hear her terrible advice.

"Lady Hazel. The queen is here to see you."

Hazel looked at her mother. What terrible timing was this for Tabitha to come to her now? "Let her in."

Hazel made no effort to stand to greet Tabitha since she was comfortable sitting and did not have to stand in the heavy dress. Renee and Helena stood, ready to greet Tabitha.

The doors opened wide and in walked Tabitha.

Tabitha was surprised to see Hazel sitting so carelessly with the dress as if the wedding was over but said nothing since Renee was present. "It is nice to see the two of you in the palace," she greeted Renee and Helena.

Tabitha found it odd that Helena stopped coming to see her but didn’t call upon Helena as she had no time to chase the child. Her interest in Helena had dwindled and shifted to Linda. "Might I have a word with Hazel alone?" She requested.
