Chapter 147: Wedding day (1)

"It’s a big day, Tobias. I hope you don’t have anything planned to go against what we’ve prepared."

"Mother, it’s my wedding day. I’d like for it to go perfectly just as anyone else would like," Tobias replied, trying to stand still for a late adjustment to be made to his shirt. "The engagement party I planned with Hazel went well."

"It did, but I still need to have some concerns. The court-"

"Do not mention the court to me on my wedding day. I’ve long grown tired of you telling me about them. How long will it take for you that we are the royals?" Tobias asked. "We have the power so don’t come telling me what they want."

"It’s best not to upset them," said Tabitha.

"You and father failed to properly deal with the court, allowing them to gain too much power throughout the palace and the kingdom. Now I have to clean up your mess and remind them of their position in the palace, but not today," Tobias said, not wanting to hear about the court today.

Three months had gone by since he proposed to Hazel and now everything was set for him to wed her then be made king and queen soon after. Tobias planned to put the court back in its place and remind everyone in the palace who was in control, but right now his attention was on Hazel.

"Shouldn’t you be with Hazel? Watching her get ready and offer help where she needs it? I hope you are not still feuding with her," Tobias said.

Since the garden party, Hazel didn’t bring up anything his mother said or did to her. Hazel made it clear that she wasn’t going to fight with his mother anymore and she stuck to her word.

Hazel addressed his mother whenever they were in the same room, but it wasn’t returned. Dinner was better as they could converse and then go on their way.

It was going well, but it would be better if his mother could make more of an effort.

"I am going there soon. Not that she needs my help since her family is in the palace. Since your father is busy, I thought you would like me to be here to help you. I cannot believe it has come time for you to wed and take after your father. I promised not to cry, but it is hard," Tabitha said, close to crying.

Tabitha had long awaited this moment to see her child sit on the throne as king. He did it without anyone harming him so he could not become king.

"You must succeed your father and be better. Do not pick a fight with the court so early in your reign," Tabitha advised him.

Tobias was once again angered by the mention of the court he planned to shake up. What else did he need to say to get his mother to stop mentioning them?

Unlike his mother, he wasn’t afraid of anyone in the court and the power they gained over the years.

Tobias stepped away from his mother now that his shirt was mended. "I would like to be alone to prepare myself for having to greet a lot of guests. Other than greeting guests and making a few speeches, I am free from my duties and only want to be told about Hazel."

"Very well," Tabitha said, putting an end to mentioning the court. ’The room for the two of you to use has already been prepared. Should you wish to leave when you are done-"

"Do not speak of that to me. I don’t want to hear about that fucked up tradition."

"Tobias!" Tabitha gasped due to the language. "You were well aware that this is to happen."

"Following nonsense set by kings in the past? Unlike those old fools who didn’t care for their wives, I want to spend my nights with Hazel. Should any of you come in the morning to check the bed, I will kill you where you stand," Tobias warned.

Tobias didn’t want to subject Hazel to having people enter the room and search the bed to confirm that their marriage was official. This time, anyone interested would have to take his word for it.

The disgusting tradition left Tobias not wanting to touch Hazel during their wedding night. Something he already planned to hold off on since they had only kissed from time to time and didn’t get to explore anything more as they were kept away from each other with their duties.

Tobias would have liked to ease Hazel into getting more comfortable with him, far past kissing before they were thrown into a room to make love, but the palace was hellbent on keeping them away from each other.

Tabitha stayed silent, opting to not make any promises she wouldn’t be able to keep. In the morning she would have to visit the young couple and check for blood to see that Hazel was pure and the marriage was consummated.

The two were expected to try for an heir as soon as possible so they shouldn’t shy away from the duty now. They were always so eager to be near each other so why stop now? Tabitha was well aware that they had been sneaking around to visit each other when they could.

For Hazel’s sake, there better be blood.

"Would you be okay with someone doing this to Sofia?" Tobias asked before his mother could leave.

"I know that it is her duty. I have been in Hazel’s position and it is not as bad as it sounds. It will go by fast," said Tabitha.

"I wish that you would stop thinking something is fine because you had to put up with it. Hazel is not you and I won’t have her go through many of our weird traditions. You can look forward to changes during my rule. Now, if you don’t mind, I would like to be alone," Tobias said as his mother was ruining the day.

Seeing that she had ruined his mood, she shouldn’t visit Hazel. The bride should be happy from beginning to end.

"Very well. I will take my leave and visit Hazel as you wish. Regardless of what you think, I am happy for you. Despite not wanting this path, you were destined to be a good king. May your reign be for many years. Excuse me." Tabitha curtsied and then walked to the door to leave Tobias alone.

Tobias finally felt at ease with his mother gone. He was back to thinking that in less than an hour, Hazel would be his wife.
