The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 149: Wedding day (3)
Chapter 149: Wedding day (3)
Renee reluctantly left the room with Helena. There was nothing she could do at the moment to stop Tabitha from being alone with Hazel as she still had to follow the queen’s order in the palace. Her ears would be glued to the door for anything that sounded off.
Tabitha waited for the maid to join in exiting the room to then turn back to Hazel. "Why is there only one maid aiding you? It is an important day where you should have many people helping."
"They helped with putting on the dress and doing my hair. I didn’t need them for the more simple task Mary could do. I am ready," said Hazel, peering down at the dress.
Why would she have the queen’s followers around longer than she needed them?
Hazel was yet to shake the maids bestowed upon her months ago and only had Mary to trust. Just a few more days and then she would get rid of the maids she had now to put together a group of people she trusted.
When she was not receiving lessons, Hazel spent part of her days exploring the palace for the mere purpose of getting close to the maids. She had a group in mind and only had to wait.
"I see. I visited the prince before coming here and he is eager for the wedding to happen. He is almost finished getting dressed and should be heading down to greet the gathering guests. I hope the day goes perfectly," said Tabitha.
Regardless of what Tabitha felt toward Hazel, she truly wanted the day to be perfect. There mustn’t be a single flaw for the guest to gossip about and for it to reach the town.
"I’ve informed Tobias that the room for tonight has been prepared. You will be brought back here for the maids to clean you and prepare you for your wedding night. I’ve carefully selected a nice fragrance for you to soak in," Tabitha said, slowly walking further into the room.
Hazel did not want to hear about her wedding night from Tabitha. It felt like something to upset her mood was soon to come out of Tabitha’s mouth. "Thank you for your care with our wedding," she replied.
No matter what, Hazel did not want Tabitha to get so under her skin that it would ruin her wedding day.
"You managed to stay long enough to get married to him. I’m impressed," Tabitha revealed.
Tabitha had anticipated Hazel leaving the palace with men like Grant wanting his granddaughter to become queen. Then there were the intense lessons that Hazel managed to endure.
Tabitha was impressed that Hazel put up a good fight and made it to this point.
Hazel had nothing to say as Tabitha being impressed meant nothing to her. She had always been certain that she would marry Tobias. Hazel never needed Tabitha to believe it.
The air in the room started to feel uncomfortable and Hazel was ready to have her family back inside as Tabitha’s presence brought discomfort.
"I won’t keep your time for long. I hope to remind you that your sheets will be checked in the morning for blood. If it is not there, then there will be a great challenge ahead of you. You must be scared of what awaits you and I can truly say that there is no need to be," Tabitha said, offering Hazel advice.
"With you having some feelings for my son, it shall make it easier for him to bed you. The head maid will give you better instructions of what you are and are not to do. The important one is that you do not run away. It would be troublesome for us to have to take you back there," said Tabitha.
"I won’t be running away so you have nothing to worry about. If you don’t mind, I would like to get married to him first before I concern myself with the wedding night. One step at a time has been helping to calm my nerves," Hazel replied.
"Right. It would do you good to have a little drink to relax you, but not enough for you to make a fool of yourself and the palace. I can have a bottle sent by one of my maids. I have a few good wines saved that help to calm my mind. You can have one to save if you wish," Tabitha offered.
"It is kind of you, but I shall refrain from drinking before the wedding starts. I will take you up on the offer another day when I am in need of relaxing," Hazel responded.
Hazel didn’t trust Tabitha so why would she accept a drink from her? Making a fool of herself might just be what Tabitha wanted. Tabitha seemed like she would enjoy the wedding being spoiled as long as she got to see Hazel make a fool of herself.
Any drinks Hazel would have for the day were either at the dinner afterwards or in her room with Tobias. Hazel was looking forward to celebrating with Tobias in private rather than with the guest she hardly knew.
"If that is all, I would like to bring my family back inside. My mother was offering me advice I wish to hear before I must go down to start the wedding," Hazel said, hoping Tabitha would leave so the good feeling would come back again.
"I wish to let you enjoy your time with your family, but Tobias asked that I see what you need. It is my duty to aid you during this time. Offer advice from one queen to another. You already know what I think you should do. Not to fall so deeply in love as he will be busy-"
"Thank you for coming to see me, but you can leave now," Hazel said, not fond of the queen’s terrible advice. She heard it once and did not need to hear it again. "I will do as I please when it comes to the prince. I have fallen in love with him so it is once again late for your advice."
"Then, I shall leave it up to you to regret not taking my advice. I have done what I promised Tobias so now I will leave. Enjoy your wedding day, Hazel. I hope that nothing disturbs it," Tabitha said, bowing her head slightly to then turn around to leave.
Hazel’s shoulders relaxed thanks to Tabitha leaving her. The conversation went better than Hazel imagined it would. She would have bet her wedding dress that Tabitha would come here to stir up trouble.
Since ignoring Tabitha and not giving in to her fights, Tabitha was a little easier to be around though something that would anger Hazel came up from time to time.
"Hazel," Renee whispered as she entered the room. "Are you alright? Did she say anything to upset you?"
Hazel smiled to calm her mother’s worries. "No mother. The talk went well and I am sure you two must know after pressing your ears to the door to try listening,
"H-How do you know about that?" Helena stammered.
Hazel chuckled. "Neither of you wanted me to be alone with her so I assumed you were trying to listen on the other side. What was said isn’t something I am not used to when it comes to the queen. I consider this one of her better days. She hasn’t spoiled the day for me. Only Tobias running away without me could do that."
"I would drag him back here. How dare he pick my sister only to try running away," Helena muttered. She hoped such a thing would never come up in the prince’s mind as Hazel would never be able to live with the embarrassment of her husband running away. "Maybe I should have gone to keep an eye on him."
Hazel awkwardly smiled as that wasn’t the best idea. Helena had not frequented the palace much since not meeting with the queen so there was not an improvement between Helena and Tobias that Hazel had personally seen.
Today was not the day for the two of them to have their first awkward conversation since the selection time with Hazel not around to be the one to make it better.
"I would prefer that you stay by my side until it comes time for you to sit down now. I should start making my way down now since this heavy dress will slow me down. Mary, please call in the other maids to help me hold the dress," Hazel said, holding out her hands for her mother and sister to pull her up at the same time.
"This dress is pretty but it seems like a big hassle," Renee noted.
"Mother, this is the price of beauty. As the future queen, Hazel must have a unique wedding dress that is far better than what we have seen all season and will start a trend. It won’t be long before we see this dress or many like it at weddings. This is why you must keep me near," Helena said as she knew about trends.
"Yes,’ Hazel agreed. "But I must say that I can’t get out of it."
"I wonder if the prince is disappointed the maids will undress you and not-"
"Helena!" Renee gasped, tapping Helena’s hands.
