The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 150: Husband and wife (1)
Chapter 150: Husband and wife (1)
"Nervous?"
"No. Annoyed by constantly being asked how I feel. I am marrying the woman I chose from the selection. How else would I feel other than happy?" Tobias asked.
Jeffrey shrugged his shoulders as weddings were filled with many mixed emotions even when you were in love with the person. "I was nervous the day I was going to marry your mother and I loved her then. You start thinking about the future and what you’re getting yourself into. It’s normal if you are a bit nervous or anxious."
"I am not. I am thinking of the present before diving so far into the future. How could I have time to think about the future when I have to be looking around to make sure no one ruins the day for Hazel? Speaking of that, where is your wife?" Tobias asked as he had not seen his mother since her last visit.
He had convinced his mother to let the wedding be done in the garden near the small church in the palace instead of sitting inside the church as this would be more to Hazel’s liking. Since Hazel did not have control of planning her wedding, he wanted to do this much for her.
"She’s your mother," Jeffrey said, still bothered by the tension amongst the family.
"And your wife," Tobias said, not seeing the issue with what he said. "We’re both aware that she hasn’t been the best with Hazel. Hopefully, the two of us getting married will change that. They’ve been on a slow track to getting better, but it is mother who needs to make more of an effort."
"You should not be thinking about this on your wedding day," said Jeffrey.
"It is unfortunate that I must because I have been told foolishness this morning. If you care for me and would like to show one last bit of power before you step down, stop anyone from coming to disturb me and Hazel in the morning," Tobias requested.
"It is normal to check for blood to see that you fulfilled your duty for the wedding night," Jeffrey replied.
It was one quick look at the sheets and then leaving once the blood was spotted. It was something done outside of the palace by families who wanted to confirm that they were delivered a virgin and that the marriage could be considered sealed.
"Right. You are a good king, but I’m afraid you might have lost control of your palace. I shall take it back," Tobias declared.
His father was busy during these last few years so Tobias saw it as the reason his father might not have noticed what was becoming of the court. Before the royals could turn into puppets, Tobias was taking back control.
The court was well aware he would be the one to do this as it was why most of the men there disliked him.
"I will admit that the court has gotten out of hand, but I am only one person. I’ve made changes you are not aware of because it was a great task to get you to stay in the palace. I’ve been fixing the mistakes of kings before me while carrying the weight of a kingdom on my shoulders. Forgive me if I have not changed the court to your liking," said Jeffrey.
It was hard to just toss anyone out of the court as the men there were to help stop many of the king’s orders they believed would hurt the kingdom. To have the power to throw who he disliked out would seem like he was abusing his power and the court was pointless.
"You are about to fill my shoes and find that there is much to look after so you might not have time to fix what you thought of fixing before becoming king. Then you will understand that it is more than sitting on the throne and giving out orders everyone has to follow," Jeffrey explained.
Tobias would find himself so burdened by all that he had to look after that his attention would no longer be on the court which was there to make his life a bit easier. There would only be a few men to annoy Tobias, but the others had been helpful.
"Right. We’re getting a little too deep into talking about the court. I’m more interested in seeing Hazel come down to me in her dress. How much longer do you have to stand here and why the hell are they sitting so far back in the crowd?" Tobias questioned, looking at Edgar and his friend Rafael sitting alone.
Jeffrey pinched Tobias’s hand since he could not smack him before a crowd. "Watch your words. We are close to the church. I’ll be standing close by during the wedding."
"You may go there now since everyone is starting to get seated. Hazel’s mother and sister are taking their seats so Hazel must be behind the doors. What can I do to make her my wife sooner?" Tobias asked, ready to pay anyone off.
"You wait for a few more minutes," Jeffrey answered in a dry tone. "I don’t know what you think of me when it comes to Hazel, but know that I adore her. She’s brought out a good side to you. I haven’t seen you so focused in years."
"I wouldn’t give her all the credit. Only for being the reason that I stay here instead of running away. Now go from my side so you don’t disrupt Hazel’s view of me," Tobias said, chasing his father away. Hazel should look ahead and see only his handsome face. Jeffrey gladly left Tobias’s side as Tabitha finally came to take her seat.
With all the guests seated, the music changed for Hazel to walk in and the larger doors opened for the young girls dropping flower petals to walk ahead of Hazel.
Tobias was able to see Hazel standing far back with a bouquet in her hands. Now that he had a clear sight of her, his eyes did not leave her for a second. He had to cement this very moment into his mind as the portraits they had done days earlier would not properly capture this moment.
Tobias paid no attention to all the guests standing and continued to watch Hazel as she slowly made her way to him with Nathan by her side, ready to hand her over to Tobias.
A veil covered her face, keeping her beauty from him, but it wouldn’t be long before he could see how wonderful she looked today. A maid had mentioned that he had a special kind of glow to him which led to him looking more handsome. Tobias longed to see if this glow was there for Hazel.
Like Tobias, Hazel kept her gaze on Tobias as there were too many people staring at her and looking at Tobias helped her to remain relaxed.
As they neared where Tobias stood with the priest, Nathan stopped to let go of her.
"This is as far as I can take you. I’ll be close by if you need me," Nathan said, kissing her forehead despite the veil in the way.
Hazel nodded her head, knowing her father would help her make a quick escape if needed, but she didn’t need him for that today. She carefully made her way to Tobias and curtsied for him to take the veil off for her.
Tobias removed the small veil, careful not to ruin her hair. He handed the small cloth to one of the young girls who dropped the flowers to take with her.
A smile was shared between Hazel and Tobias as they were finally face to face after not seeing each other for two days.
