The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 188: Another woman (3)
Chapter 188: Another woman (3)
"King Tobias, when will we hear good news from the queen?"
"Good news about what?" Tobias questioned, looking up from the papers the court had him reading. "What is it that concerns you about my wife now? A child?"
"Well yes," Kurt, a man of the court answered.
"Don’t you think we will make an announcement when there is a child? We wouldn’t keep it a secret. Once again, just wait. It is too soon to expect news," Tobias replied.
"But-"
"We should do as the king says and wait," said Mark Wilkerson. He was new to this court and hearing the men speak of a child was starting to annoy him.
Though Mark looked forward to the Castros line continuing he thought the couple should have a moment to themselves before a child came. He was hearing so much about a child that it was starting to feel like he was the one being asked to have one.
Kurt glared at Mark for trying to kiss up to the king. It was important that they knew the queen could give an heir. They shouldn’t waste time with her and not bring women into the palace to be at the king’s side.
"Agreeing with the king won’t mean that he will-"
"I like him," Tobias cut in, pointing to Mark.
Mark wasn’t here long but was on the list of men Tobias liked in the palace already.
"Let’s move on from my wife before I start talking about your wives and you won’t like what I have to say. Let’s move on to other matters. Edgar Collins has received the title of duke and will be coming into the court at times under my request to help you," said Tobias.
"With all due respect, the palace does not need any help. We all fail to see why he deserved the title of duke," said Saul.
"Let me see," Tobias said, pretending to think about it. "How many of you joined me in a battle to protect the kingdom? As I recall, more than half the men in this room have never picked up a sword to help anyone. Do not try to say that your role in the court has helped the kingdom. You’re more focused on my wife than the people."
"His family has been of great help to the palace and it was time to be recognised. I will listen to your complaints and allow the duke to be here to listen so he can hear your complaints. Wouldn’t that be lovely?" Tobias asked.
Mark tapped his fingers on the table as he held back his laughter because of his peers’ silence. He had heard of this duke and how many were afraid of him. He could not wait to see the man behind so much fear.
"I think we should go back to the earlier discussion. Not about a child," Kurt quickly added as Tobias glared at him. "I mean to bring women to your side."
Tobias abruptly stood up, his chair being pushed back was the only thing heard in the room. "I have said to drop any matters concerning my wife. I don’t know what my father allowed you to do during his time, but I am a different king. Do not speak of bringing women into the palace to a man who has not long gotten married."
"That doesn’t mean that years from now you can bring this up again. Listen carefully, I will not be taking any other women by my side so don’t trouble the queen and wish for the safety of the child whenever it comes. I must take my leave now before I give into my thoughts of hanging one of you," Tobias said, fixing the sleeve of his shirt as he walked.
He was sticking to his plan of not killing without proper reason to be viewed as a tyrant king, but if talk of mistresses continued, he would kill these men in secret when they were alone.
"I shall walk the king out," Mark said, ignoring the looks from his peers as they thought he was kissing up to the king.
Mark didn’t care about their opinions as he was only here to do his job which was to help the king and the people in the kingdom. He had quickly learned that many of the men in the court were too caught up in palace affairs and not their duties.
If the king was plotting to get rid of those who were no longer fit to be here, Mark would gladly help him as he wanted people with the same interests around.
"Are you not afraid that they will pick at you for being so quick to come to my side?" Tobias asked, looking to his right at Mark.
Mark smiled. "I am not here to make friends. I won’t be sad if they don’t invite me to their gatherings. My purpose for being here is to help the kingdom."
"And what is your purpose for walking me out when no harm will fall upon me here? What do you want to say to me?" Tobias asked.
"Talk of other women will come up again as it is their daughters they are bringing to seduce you. I’ve had to witness those young women coming here. The court is no place for family members to be walking around unless they are here for a case. Their daughters roam here as if it is their second home," said Mark.
"I’ve been told that they’ve been inviting their daughters to the palace. With a woman like the queen by my side, no one would be able to seduce me unless they were to steal her face and personality. I only drink when I am with the queen or someone I trust so you don’t need to be concerned about me being drunk out of my mind," Tobias said, stopping at the entrance to finish his talk with Mark.
"There are plenty of other methods to be used to get their daughters to you. Especially when you don’t share a room with the queen. Do not underestimate the lengths they would go to get their daughters by your side. Some have no shame and would send those women to your room. They think as a man, you wouldn’t turn down a woman throwing herself at you."
"You are said to be a flirt who enjoys time with women," Mark added.
Tobias sighed as his past was hurting him now more than ever. He was grateful Hazel was ignoring it but now it had others thinking he would want other women. "I was young and stupid now it’s a pain in my ass." freeweɓnovel.cøm
"I’m told that months before the selection you had a-"
"We’re all young in the past. Don’t make me start to dislike you, Mark. Here I was thinking that I would offer men to work under you since you seem to be a man not involved in their games. Maybe I was wrong," said Tobias.
"Then you would have no one to help you collect evidence to get these men not deserving of being in the court out of it. It is something to think over. Be careful on your ride back to the palace," Mark said, slightly bowing his head before leaving.
Tobias watched as Mark walked away. "He was a good pick," he said, once again happy with his choice for the once empty seat in the court.
