Chapter 213: To please the one you love (2)

"I’m sorry to be disturbing you, but you are the only person we trust to escort me to my parent’s home. I will repay you in the future," Hazel promised.

Kenneth was true to his word and came the next day to escort Hazel out of the palace. They travelled with fewer guards than Kenneth and Tobias originally wanted as Hazel didn’t want to bring too much attention to the fact she was leaving the palace.

Hazel was leaving Tobias with a storm as they had informed the court of her leaving at the last second to avoid hearing their opinions about her leaving.

"You are the queen, Hazel. I am more than happy to serve you. If you need help getting away from the king, you can call upon me anytime. I can take you anywhere to get away from the palace if you need," Kenneth offered.

"Thank you but I don’t plan to leave Tobias," Hazel replied, declining the offer. "It is already hard to leave him now, but I do miss my parents. I have missed travelling to your home to spend time with Linda."

"You have grown up now and have other responsibilities. Married life makes you busy but in time you will get used to it. I had many days of missing other responsibilities because my marriage came first. The struggle of making time for friends. It was hard to adapt to my new life as a knight when starting a family but it did get better. Look at me," Kenneth said, happy with how his life turned.

"Yes, you do have a good life. I wish I could be like you to exit the palace when the sun sets and only return when it is time for my duties. The palace can be a good place but I don’t know how long it will take to get rid of the people making it miserable," said Hazel.

"I’ve heard that the king has gotten rid of a few people who were abusing their power. He’s done more than a few kings before him already. I once thought he was childish, but I must applaud him. He is working hard to better the kingdom. I hope he takes a break," Kenneth said as it seemed Tobias was going nonstop.

"The coming festival would be a nice break. I am thinking of an occasion where I can get him to not work for a day but as soon as he is free, the court sends something for him to look at. I feel like it is on purpose but I don’t want to cause trouble," Hazel replied. "Would you ever kill anyone in court?"

"For a good reason, I would. I will kill anyone who looks to harm the Castros. That is what I swore to so if someone is troubling you, tell me."

Kenneth’s sword was already sharpened and awaited taking off someone’s head.

"Not right now. I am just thinking of who I can turn to if things in the palace get bad. I trust that you would be there one day if something were to go wrong. I do not doubt that. I know you will be there fast. Like the days when you thought Linda had gone missing," Hazel chuckled

She had never been more concerned than watching an army of men almost turn the kingdom upside down just looking for Linda who was late to return home because something happened to her carriage wheel.

Kenneth sighed as it wasn’t one of his finest moments. "If not for you, it would have taken longer to get her to talk to me again. Something about embarrassing her."

"It was a bit embarrassing but I will share something. Linda likes that you care so much for her. It does bother her that there is always someone watching over her and chasing suitors away, but she has admitted to not wanting to change her family," Hazel said, hoping this would make Kenneth feel better.

"Thank you. I am in debt to you for caring for my daughter over the years. She used to keep to herself and was a little shy until you came around. I’m sorry about what happened to your maid. I heard that they are closing the case," said Kenneth.

Hazel smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes. "They are. Maybe I was thinking too much into it and pushed too hard that she was killed. It is still on my mind that was what happened but what can I do when there is nothing to prove murder? I’ve sent a letter to her family that they can request anything from me."

"That was kind of you."

"But it doesn’t bring their daughter back," Hazel said, saddened by the thoughts of Lynn.

Hazel placed her hand by her side where there was a sharp pain. She hoped that it wasn’t time for her monthly bleeding as she was hoping to share news of a child with Tobias soon. The other problem would be her dress stained with blood as she wasn’t prepared for this and wore a light-coloured dress.

"Are you sick?" Kenneth asked, noticing the way she winced.

"No, but I may need to call a doctor as soon as I arrive. Not one from the palace," Hazel quickly added as Arlo would call for her to return to the palace. ’I’m sure that it is nothing," Hazel said, moving her hand from her side though the pain persisted.

She was well last night and this morning when Arlo came to visit her so it was a chance that she was not pregnant. It was time for her body to hate her. It could also be something she ate for breakfast that was upsetting her now.

Hazel rested back in her seat, trying not to think of the pain as it was just a little further until she reached her parents’ home and then she could call upon a doctor. It would take too long for her to turn back to the palace.

Kenneth felt lost as to what to do to help Hazel. His wife was the one better than dealing with the pains that women endured. He had always felt like his comforting words would upset women as he didn’t know what they were feeling.

"Should I tell them to speed up or change direction for a nearby doctor?" Kenneth asked.

Hazel wasn’t able to answer in her state. She just wanted Kenneth to do whatever would make the pain go away. She groaned when the carriage hit a bump in the road which made her situation worse. She heard something drop but with her eyes now closed, Hazel didn’t know what it was.

Kenneth held back cursing the coachman for not helping. He leaned forward to pick up his fallen sword.``Be careful with where you drive before- Shit," he cursed. Panicked filled him from the sight of Hazel’s white shoe stained by blood. "Send for a doctor!" He ordered the guards outside who were riding on horses.

"Hazel, there is blood on your shoe. Please tell me that you might have cut yourself or it is that thing that happens for women," Kenneth said, praying it was one of the two as Hazel shouldn’t lose a baby now. Not now when she was outside of the palace seeking to be with her family.

He didn’t know a lot about women so maybe he lacked knowledge about this. Many matters women faced were not something he studied unless the women in his family were ill and the doctor informed him of the cause.

He knew two things about what bleeding meant for women and judging from Hazel’s inability to answer what it was he had guessed right.

Hazel shook her head as what she felt just now didn’t feel like her usual bleeding. What she felt scared her and Hazel had a feeling that Kenneth also shared the same thought.

She continued to hope that what she was experiencing was her bleeding and it was just strange this time.

Hazel gripped her dress. She could feel the mess that was made where she sat. The mere thought of what must have happened left her feeling numb or maybe the pain was gone as the deed was done.

"We’re close to your home so just bear with it a little longer. A doctor will come and care for you," Kenneth said, trying his best to comfort her, but knew his words meant nothing to her.

"I’ll be blamed for leaving-"’

"No, you will not. I will shield you from any fool who wants to put this on the trip away from the palace. It could have happened at any time. Just, just hold on a little longer," Kenneth said, looking out the window.

Kenneth couldn’t understand the sudden change as Hazel was well when he arrived to pick her up. She looked down as opposed to how cheery she would be around him but he placed it as her thinking about the maid.

Kenneth knew well that if she had lost a baby, the men in court would not let this matter rest and drag Hazel through hell. Either pleading with the king to not let her leave again or making claims that she would not be fit to carry the king’s heir and call upon women to enter the palace.

To ensure that nothing more would happen to Hazel, it was best that she did not return to the palace today.
